Who are the top 10 midfielders in the league?

Agreed. You almost need to differentiate between pure mids and those that split their time forward. It's not comparing apples to apples.

If you look at "match winning ability", then the Dustys of the world will come out on top. If you look at statistical output, then the Macrae's will come out on top.
Might even be Dunkley lol. Dude is a machine. Racks up the pill and does all the the little things too. He might be the best all round mid right now.

Macrae a fair way ahead of him as an all-round mid.

Dunkley as a pure inside/defensive minded mid, sure. I know Dunks kicks more goals than Macrae, but overall Macrae is a lot more dangerous when the Dogs are attacking with his ability on the outside and ball use.

Yea I have Mundy just in front of Oliver at the moment
Yeah I could see how that could be the case.

The one thing against Oliver is Petracca and Gawn would be racking up votes too

You could make a case Macrae is not far off the best mid in the comp to be fair.
But he is not. But you get my point. Using ave disp as the only thing in the argument makes it laughable . It doesn't matter if dusty ave 20disp a game we all know the impact he has per disp compared to others

Well if he is not played there much it is pretty hard to argue against what you are saying. If he played pure mid, I'm sure he would be still around the top, not outside the top 10.
He is still a mid , different type of mid , like how there's inside and outside , but he is still a mid. Goes in gets clearances , sets teammates up etc
Probably would call him a hybrid mid. Hence he is the best mid in the comp and best player

This dude jc12 always post pure quality such as his last two posts?
Mate you sound like that stkilda Nutter cooper from fb 🤣 look at your quality. Unsure why Dusty is not best in the comp ? Look at his performances in big games mate. Look at his output year in year out. Combine those. That's why he is the best.

The argument isn't whether he's the best PLAYER in the comp. The argument is over Dusty the MIDFIELDER. It's a valid discussion to have.

I have not read a single post about anyone saying he’s out of form lol who said this?

There is absolutely no way he’s leading the Brownlow, off the top of my head I’d say Dunkley, Bontempelli, Macrae Oliver, Walker and Mundy would all be comfortably ahead of him.

dusty would have a definite 3 votes in round one, maybe a vote or 2 in round two and that would just about be it. He wasn’t in the top 3 players on the ground against the Saints but it wouldn’t surprise me if the umps slotted him in for a vote. So maybe he would be on 6 votes right now if we are being generous. That wouldn’t be close to leading. Someone would be on 10+ at the end of round 5

So three players from one team after round 5 are gonna be leading?

Interesting

Disagree, there are subjective judgements all through the statistics. But will leave it there since a bit OT.
There's actually not when you understand the processes behind it all. Also just because a decision is made by a human, does not necessarily make it subjective if it is made within an objective system. There are rules, definitions and reviews built into the process which are applied equally across the board which make it objective in terms of producing stats. There is no real scope to introduce any influence of personal biases/beliefs to make it subjective.

And who builds those processes, rules, definitions and reviews? Who creates your 'objective' system?

I think you can still have objective outcomes from a system that may have arbitrary/subjective aspects.

I mean, the entire system of scoring in AFL is arbitrary. But we can still say that, within that system, one team was objectively the winner.

What Jesus said above.

By your measure, nothing created by people can be objective which is obviously untrue.
It was a simple question which Jesus didn't answer. As I said, leave it we are not going to agree and it is off topic.
I like it how folks now refer to me as Jesus. What a time to be alive.

That's not something I agree with Dustin Martin has won more centre bounce clearances than anyone in the last 4 years.
he was ranked 1st in 2017, 1st in 2018, 10th in 2019, 9th in 2020 and is 19th this year. Center clearances arent the only thing that matter as a mid. Personally I think he is much better as a forward than a mid. I know as a cats fan Id much rather see him in the midfield than playing forward.

But he doesn't play forward much, he is still mainly a mid who doesn't go into the back half much. 34 possessions on the weekend are mid numbers.

I found the Dyl and friends podcast with Tom Mitchell, Cripps, Neale and Rowell pretty interesting. When asked which player from another team they would want in their team they answered as followed;

Cripps: Nic Nat as he wants a dominant ruck.
Rowell: Bont
Mitchell: Was going to say Bont but as Rowell had already chosen him he went with Dusty.

Perhaps it's not as clear cut as some are making it out to be? After all peers are probably the best judges.

Peers who follow football maybe.

The AFL did a survey of players and found more than 50% watch no football at all other than the opposition review for each game and the post match review with the coaches.

I think he is better doing both. Takes a serious mid to run with him and a serious defender to stop him.

So he throws team balance out when he switches.
