Who are the top 10 midfielders in the league?

Bontempeli needs to sort out his set shots before being talked about as a potential #1. Had 42 shots on goal this year for only 15 majors.

Doesn't have to. Look at how many goals per game he kicks and also take note of his direct goal assists per game.
Compare that kind of offensive output to all the other top midfielders and you can see why he's regarded as one of the best in the game at the moment.

Less than one a game

good for a midfield type but not that noteworthy?

Fast forward 5 years and I think the number 1 and 2 spots will be dominated by McCluggage and Walsh.

I don't. Improvement isn't linear and in all likelihood someone else will burst onto the scene and explode as a footballer.

Not that they aren't or won't be great footballers, but Walsh to me I can see as a gun accumulator and distributor, but he doesn't have that X Factor carry a team and win a game for you game like the Martin, Fyfe, Dangerfield have.

How many midfielders in the current game are averaging 0.9 goals per game?

It's noteworthy and his career averages are very similar to what Martin's were at 127 games.
I suspect Bontempelli will spend even longer periods of time in the forward line as his career progresses.

May want to go get ya vision checked if that's the case mate

hes obviously very tidy but he is already running at top10 in afl levels last time i looked. Walsh will get better but i wonder how much. Ive said this before and carlton fans were outraged of course

i am curious how much how ceiling he has

rankine, rozee, blakey, stack types might be hit or miss but they look to have good potential currently

Don’t feed it.

i cant see walsh getting much better

Whaaaaaat? Do you seriously think that Walsh has basically hit his peak already, or are you taking the pi$$? There was no sarcasm emoji so I couldn’t tell...

Yeah of course there will be gun footballers that burst onto the scene. That’s an absolute given. I don’t think you necessarily need X factor to carry a team over the line. Robert Harvey is a good example of this. I can see the point you are trying to make, but respectfully disagree on this one.

Dusty
Danger
Fyfe
Bont
Cripps
T Kelly
Yeo
Macrae
Prestia
Zorko

apologies
Neale
Pendlebury
Shuey
Happy to see you credit Prestia for the season that he had. Whether he is that high I don't know but he was our most important player for the year no doubt.
I think Pendlebury still sits just under the top 5, had a great year.

Love Pendles and acknowledge that he had a great year but he isn’t quite as damaging as he was in his pomp
Prestia has gone under the radar for a while now
Does everything well and runs all day

Cotchin, Prestia, Edwards, Lambert are a bit underrated imo
Especially Prestia. He's barely been mentioned in this thread. B & F winner in a premiership year and hasn't played a bad final yet. Absolute gun.

I feel like you can't rank midfielders because it all depends on what you have already and what you need, or what you value in a player.

Sometimes it's like apples - oranges.

A midfielder like Tom Mitchell or Lachie Neale get their value from his workrate as much as anything. They might not impact the scoreboard as heavily as a Dustin Martin or a Patrick Dangerfield, but they require less rotation, attend more stoppage and allow other players to impact the scoreboard in their stead.

Good teams have both. Richmond have Prestia and Cotchin who provide the workrate, and Martin who provides the impact.

I disagree with Walsh. Will be a very good player no doubt but it will definitely lean in favour of players with more distinguishing traits.

McCluggage, Taranto, Noah Anderson likely to be up there. Scope for more scoreboard impact, more explosive traits, taller.

Players like Walsh, Worpel and Rowell will always be seen (whether rightly or not) to be not as damaging, more accumulating types.

How good RFC winning the flag without much of a get-first-pozzy midfield. Bucking the trend, again. They really are pace setting, and all my club can do is imitate them, poorly. The Pies should be trying to imitate their injury management practices, and Eddie should be wearing a dress, and keeping his head down and bottom up.
