Absolutely hate the notion perpetuated by people like this that women and minorities need to be represented in every realm.

The fact that there are no women hosting shows on Fox Footy isn't a sign of sexism. The fact that there were no non-white people on that five-person panel is not a sign of racism. Do people really want a world where panels are selected by going, "okay, we need a five-person panel. We'll take these two white guys, these two black guys, and this woman". That just seems like tokenism to me.

It would be racist, to make race an issue in something, that so blatantly does not involve race, in any way shape or form.

Hi Erin - if you want to put a feminist spin on something in today's Age - try writing an piece about this..

http://www.theage.com.au/national/f...on-values-scott-morrison-20140928-10n4fw.html

Perhaps a tad more worthy than criticising a bunch of random Hawks supporters for referring to Sydney players with female pronouns

Be careful how you write it though. It's not the evil "white men" marrying off 14 year old girls, so you may get labelled a racist by.. well.. people like you.

How many people have heard racist comments at the footy?

I have been going for 10 years probably 12 games a year on average and never heard a comment from any supporters

Been going 25 years 10-12 games a year, can remember one guy in the mid 90s getting escorted out very quickly for naming racist comments to Brisbane players at a freo v bris game.

This Erin bitch be bat shit crazay!

Pray tell?

A racist person doesn't always simply hate another race. Some do, most have particular prejudices that they believe about a certain race; things like 'Asians can't drive' or 'Mexicans are lazy' are racist ideas but a person can have those ideas and still not hate an entire race for it, they wouldn't boo a Mexican or asian playing sport because of those beliefs. You questioned that if the crowd were racist why were they not booing other aboriginal players. Most people who are racist probably doesn't spit vitriol every time they see a black person. Some will, most internalise their prejudices and racism.

Lets say the people shouting at Goodes were only shouting at Goodes and that the things they said to him were only ever to him and they've never made another racist remark ever. If the insults they used on Goodes were about his race then the people saying them are racists, they are using a persons race as a reason to insult them, a way to degrade them and create a sense of superiority that they themselves feel they have above him.

boos?

It's not the greatest article - but I think it would be foolish to suggest that the AFL doesn't have a problem with racism, sexism & homophobia. However most sports have this problem unfortunately. Why? Because they're still problems in wider society, it's just more subtle these days.

There's plenty in her article to criticise without resorting to petty rubbish like that. All it does is display your own small mindedness.

There's too much irony in this post for your mind to consume tonight I suspect. The difference is, I don't get on some PC-high horse. I enjoyed your thread about how irritating you find those kids who give out the GF medals, and I suspect someone hacked into your account because it doesn't seem like the same person wrote this post I quoted.

My experience was not unique. Friends at other points in the ground heard Goodes called a "black dog". Others were heard saying, "That girl was right about you", referring to the incident last year when Goodes pointed to the crowd after he was called an ape. Another chimed in, "I can definitely see the resemblance."

Quote from the article.

It's actually gotton a lot better over the past 20 years. It's no where near as bad as it used to be. That being said we should be reminded every so often that it is still an issue and we do need to focus on fixing it. Unfortunately this article doesn't really succeed in its message and has the tone of a complaint sent in to a tv station because they used too many swear words

Why didn't these "friends at other points in the ground" report these individuals to the authorities? Not like these comments are any better than others that have had spectators penalised.

Who knows if they did or didn't. That wasn't really the point of my post.

Fair enough. I just personally find it hard to believe that she or her friends aren't exaggerating given a couple examples of people getting (rightfully) penalised, but suddenly the racists are all over the place getting away with it. Doesn't discredit your point at all though.

Yeah, I've already said that this is a pretty awful article. There are plenty of more insightful and measured articles concerning racism within our sport, this one feels more like someone wagging their finger and gets people to disregard a lot of what its saying quickly. Which is unfortunate because it is an issue within our sport that deserves time and conversation.

As a fan of football and the AFL competition am I supposed to feel dirty now?

I find her line that Australian Rules Football (by the way, is it the AFL or the entire sport the writer is targeting? I'm not sure, since she references the sport not the competition) has a problem with inclusiveness.

The irony in the article is, based on one match day experience in 11 years of going to the football, the writer labels the entire AFL (or is it the sport, again I'm not sure) fraternity, fans, commentators, media alike as racist, sexist and homophobic. She probably thinks we all hate animals too.

If anyone is being exclusive it is the writer.

I think it's great that she skewered an entire sport and all its fans after one game out of eleven years. If you encounter this level of unruly behaviour once in 11 years, that's a pretty damn good strike rate.

She'd faint at the EPL.

I'm not supporting the racism, never have and never will.

But if you check the author's twitter account photo stream, there's a number of topless footballers she happily ogles. I'm not hyper sensitive like some but it's clearly sexist.

Hypocrisy at its finest.

You know the weird thing is, the writer essentially used a recognised media outlet to vent her frustrations/disappointment in losing a grand final.

The same sort of motivation that causes normally well adjusted people to act like morons at the football that she is also guilty of with her article.

Only probably with a proof reader and editor to tidy it up.
