A month ago you could probably argue Daicos. Atm I’m going Taylor, simply because we are splitting hairs but if I had the choice for any of them to be in my side tomorrow it would be him.

I saw Sicily first hand on Saturday and he is a very very good footballer. His weakness in his role is a slight lack of height, and I think he would really benefit from having a gun key defensive stopper on the payroll at Hawks.
Sic is very unique that he is probably the perfect make up of Strength/Agility with elite hands/reading the ball in flight and elite kicking/accuracy and penetration.

If he was a few inches taller this conversation would be done.

Height shouldn't be the only reason to discredit him because every player has something for example imagine if Steven May was a yard quicker?

Sicily is a top class player. I would just love to see him playing beside say a Weitering type of Full Back. Sicily not making the AA team in 2022 has placed a massive stain on that selection process imo.

Steven May imo.

All jokes aside, Balta probably isn't quite the best defender in the league, but he wouldn't be far off it. He's also younger than most of the other elite defenders.

I think Balta has some areas he needs to improve to get to the very pointy end of this discussion, but I think he is as good or better than any defender in the game at one highly valuable aspect of the game - winning contests and escaping out the front of the contest streaming towards his team's goal.

I think what makes Sicily extra impressive is how much incoming ball he has to deal with, and he isn’t necessarily supported by an elite back unit.

Despite that, attacks as well as any back while still putting the clamps on
The change in the game when he went off for treatment says it all, currently the defender you most want to avoid, if you're playing Hawthorn.

He does suffer brain freezes but he is a great intercept mark a big kick and he is pretty quick

you said he is unbeatable, I pointed out that he clearly isn't
They were all either poorly umpired goals or general play goals not involving Moore. Still unbeaten.

In all seriousness though, although Walker kicked 5, he kicked 3 on him, not all of his goals were on Moore.

Sam Taylor is the best defender in the league.

In regards to Sicily's lack of height, remember he shouldn't be a KPD, he just needs to play as one because he's our best player and we don't have any other option. Hardwick is a very good player, but is a small/medium defender, not a KPD, Scrimshaw a bit taller but is better used as a HBF, and the biggest body we have there, Blanck, has some potential as a stopper but is not a guaranteed selection every week. It's why we recruited Grainger-Barrass, and why it's so frustrating he hasn't come on yet (though he's only a third year player, and still has plenty of time). If Sicily was playing in the backline we had 10 years ago, with Lake, Gibson, and Birchall, his life would be a lot easier than it is now.

There’s some quality defenders getting around but the numbers - and just watching him dominate - clearly show Sam Taylor is the best in the comp.

He was very good on Saturday. I had him beating Lewis even though he kicked 4

Very much so, but it also shows how good Lewis is, that if he gets a mark and kick within 50, he's almost guaranteed to get the goal. Balta is a star in the making though, but that's the backman's life; you can beat your man for 90% of the time, but a couple of things go wrong (a 50-50 free going the other way, one mistimed jump, the forward one step quicker on the lead) and the stats sheet shows your opponent had a good day.

These are two different questions.

I would say Taylor this year. Sicily a shout.

Over the careers of the defenders currently playing it is 4 AA from 6 years Tom Stewart, unless someone else has some better record I don't know about. Shout out ot J McGovern who was a beast in the day. Now a beast only in catering.

Who is the best small defender (that actually plays defence)?

Sam Taylor by a long stretch imo. Elite 1v1 or intercepting
