Who of the current side would get in a revised "Team of the Century"

Scarlett would be the only one.

Jnr and Bartel are the only other two at this stage who have the potential to make it.

Ah screw it, make them all in our Team Of The Century II, and then they can play against each other.

You are seriously talking down some of our greatest players here. If Selwood doesn't have the potential to make it, who does??? Selwood's a fair superior player to Couch already, IMHO.

I also think Corey Enright is massively underrated outside the club and, from your post, with supporters too. Hard to see that he wouldn't get close to making selection - consistently excellent for a long long time now.

Finally, another couple of years of his current quality and you'd think Steve Johnson would have to come close. Maybe on the bench?

Course, these guys need to finish their careers for it to be clear, but if we are talking about potential, there's a few guys in the current team who I think would have that covered...

Joel Corey should be a better chance than Ottens. Would those who saw both play take Corey over Michael Turner? Considering Ian Nankervis could only manage an emergency spot, it's a tough side to crack. Ling would be nominated to the squad of 40-50 or whatever it is.

Johnson vs Chapman is an interesting debate, as well.

What do we think now?

For me Scarlett, Ablett, Bartel are locks. Others that would be on the cusp would be Enright, Chapman, Ottens and S.Johnson. Selwood will make the team assuming his output stays the same for another couple of seasons.

My revised team:

B: Bernie Smith - Matthew Scarlett - "Jocka" Todd
HB Dick Grigg - Reg Hickey - Corey Enright
C: Mick Turner - Ed Greeves - Jimmy Bartel
HF:Gary Ablett Snr - Fred Flanigan - Bob Davis
F: Steve Johnson - Doug Wade - Peter Pianto
Rucks: Polly Farmer, Gary Hocking, Gary Ablett jnr

I/C: Paul Chapman, Paul Couch, Billy Goggin & Brad Ottens
Other than Newman for Ottens I reckon you've nailed it.

Sellwood has to be in after Saturday -the guy is an absolute champion .Obvoiusly im a big rap for Goggin -but i think Sellwood is better

Premierships are the name of the game and Selwood and Bartel in that 2nd Quarter when the chips were down -just outstanding

Actually i would pick Selwood Bartel Scarlet and Johnson ahead of Gary Ablett snr every day of the week . Sure Ablett was exciting and freakisk -but he could also be lazy and disinterested -and outside of 89 his other GF performances were very ordinary. Ok 94 and 95 he had very limited opportunities but 92 where 2 goals up at halftime Ablets playing on a half forward flank and John Worsfold totally eclipsed him.

Sellwood -just the complete footballer -gives every ounce of energy to every contest got good skills -the complete package -the guys a winner
I looked at the team of the century -but if i was picking a team to win a premiership and my life was riding on it -my 1st 2 picks would be Selwood and Bartel both Champions -and in my opininion the best 2 Cats ever.

Ablett Jnr will definitly be in a revised TOC

Scarlett would definitely join him...

Bartel would be close to a dead certainty. Yes, brownlow doesn't guarantee a spot - but brownlow, norm smith and 3 x premiership medallions puts you in a fair position to do so.

Steve Johnson would safely make a reserve TOC - could he or Chappy edge out H Young in the FP in the first team? (I don't know much about Young TBH)

Nice hands but his defensive pressure was pretty poor

very hard to judge teams of the century. i'd say ablett, bartel and scarlett would be a must, and johnson, enright and selwood would be in contention. having said that, i haven't seen enough of most of those who made the team so couldn't tip anyone out

Joel Corey, anyone?

Remember him?

Anyone?

Love him and considered him but I think he falls just short. One has to go out for him. Who? Still think Couch has him covered (just - though I would take Corey into a final ahead of Couch which sounds like a bit of a contradiction). I can't see anyone else that he could replace.

To be honest I'm not sure GAJ makes it now. Surely he must be judged on his output at Geelong, and whilst amazing... 2 flags and a Brownlow. It might not be enough to get him there?

He has achieved a hell of a lot more than most on the list even though his career at the club was a little shorter than we all would have hoped. I think we should separate the emotion of him leaving and from what the guy did to for our club - he was probably, on talent, in the top 4-5 players to have ever played with us and as you stated won one Brownlow (could have won 3), 2 flags, 3 MVP's in a row (never done) and multiple AA's. He more than deserves his spot.

Ablett Jr, Scarlett, Bartel all absolute certainties. Ridiculous to suggest Ablett Sr wouldn't make it as well, bloke kicked 1000 goals and is stil probably the most naturally talented player to ever exist

Geelong TOTC

I'm not sure whether or not this topic has been done to death before, but with Geelong being the best team I've ever seen, I'll give it a go anyway.
If you were to submit a current, up to date, Geelong team of the century, what changes would you make?

Sorry for the intrusion ladies and gents!

Difficult to do really....

Look at Harley vs say Menzel.

Harley was instrumental in changing the culture at the club but by his own admission his body was shot in 09.... He added so much...

Menzel was a spark that helped drive the older players to improve and his own game brought another Stevie J type "magic" to the club....

But who gets the nod? Very difficult question.... but fun!

Go Catters...

Re: Geelong TOTC

Henry Young gets cut automatically as he didn't play in the past century.

Scarlo goes straight in. In five years time when a couple of our guys have finished up and a few more guys drop out because of the 100 year element, I'd say Jimmy Bartel is a certainty as well.

Of course the dream is that Gaz comes back to finish off as a Cat, he'd walk straight in too. Best player outside of his old man & Carey that I've ever seen.
