You can't say Gold Coast is a basket case for a decade and then absolve a guy that was there from inception and say he has nothing to do with that.

As soon as he gets moved from defence there's a significant improvement in their defensive output
As soon as he gets booted for good there's improvement across the ground

And after he got booted from Gold Coast, you'd think such a popular and highly rated assistant would immediately get a gig elsewhere, right? He didn't get a job anywhere for 2021. Must be an abberation, a year off, he's definitely going to get a gig for 2022. Wait, he wasn't hired until Cameron was sacked, from a mate of his?

Nope. He's just a s**t assistant coach who is up for the job because he used to play for Essendon.
He was a part of it. But how much blame can you confidently put at his feet? Giving Rugby players $1m+ a year to stuff about, not getting scans until teams are released on a weekly basis, constantly injured players, no culture and being in a notoriously hard market like GC to succeed in....just scratching the surface. Do you think if there was another assistant instead of Solomon they would've had a noticeably better defence?

He's removed at the tail end of a lengthy rebuild - surely you're not surprised there was some improvement as that process matured.

I'm not sitting here saying he's highly rated and in demand - I don't think anybody has. Just saying you are being overly harsh to the point that I think he has personally wronged you in the past lol.

I didn't rate Dan Jordan and Rutten for my own reasons and you were adamant it was just because I didn't like them. Yet it's very clear you don't like Solomon or Hird yet seem oblivious to your own bias.

I can understand why people think Hird and Solomon are good coaches. I just think the hard, quantifiable evidence suggests that they aren't.

I'm aware of my biases. I don't want them as coaches, period. I get frustrated with the boys club at Essendon and hiring these two would be a clear indication that it's still going strong.

You need to look at it with an open mind though, surely? If Yze doesn’t impress in an interview or Lade doesn’t cut it and Hird and/or Solomon blow the panel away how could you still go against it?

I can only go by gut feel as I’m not in the inner sanctum of the AFL but previous results, particularly from an assistant coach, don’t always tell the tale.

The list of failed coaches who had faultless resumes is endless so it can’t be the only factor to consider.

They shouldn't have even been part of the process as far as I'm concerned.

If Hird gets through and is considered the best candidate I have a gut feeling he may well just be the phoenix rising from the ashes and get the job done.
I have been a solid no but you ask anyone who played under him and they all loved him. No one has a bad word to say about him from that playing group and a couple of players I am still in contact with still say how much of a motivator he was and how everyone just wanted to play for him.
I am a bit torn. I was annoyed at the time that he took so long to actually own his part in the whole debacle. I know he would never have deliberately put his players in danger but he had to own it sooner rather than drag things out . However I have a strange feeling he has it in him to be the bloke who will get it done.
Did he ever own it?

Well that’s not totally true, he wanted to stay in Qld to grow his business he had just started. Could’ve had a job if he decided to leave the state. Lots of suns players speak glowingly about Solomon and were shattered when he left the club.

People arguing Hird will be a different person now should consider Matthew Knights, who would also be a different person. At least Knighter has had a hand in bringing teams to premierships as a coach. If the Cats win on Saturday, there's another reason he should apply.

Think people might be missing the point somewhat that the bulk of decent applicants are not putting their hat into the ring because of the spectre of Hird in the shadows.. its not just Hird the man, but what he and the old boys club in the backstalls represents. Just him being encouraged/allowed to apply has probably spooked the market enough to suggest nothing has changed. One might argue allowing him to apply might suggest everything has changed because its a proper process - but we has humans all have intuition... you can generally smell the truth and its the former that rings true

Yep, Knights should apply.

This is now the new funniest outcome

Yep. People pumping up hird against the lack of candidates, when more have dropped the more hird is linked.
