Too close. Far too close.

Bottom line is that unless we clean out Roo and the cronies in charge (Kelly for one), then it will make absolutely zero difference who the new coach is.

Unless we clean out, an experienced coach won't come near the club. They will know that they won't be able to make the changes required.
That means yet another rookie coach, who we can teach the super successful 'Crows way'.

It's going to have to be an incredible turn around, because right now there is not a chance in hell I renew my membership.

I wouldn't give you the benefit of the doubt that this is sarcasm based on your posting history.

I get the feeling that Roo for you is like Eddie McGuire was for us. And until he is gone, nothing is going to change because all the problems kind of trace back to him one way or another.

I see it so differently, Eddie Maguire fought tooth and nail for your club - anyone attacking it he went after, he railed against AFL house when he needed to and he made sure Collingwood were not going to get run over by the powers to be. Did he make mistakes - sure did, but we can only dream about having someone at the head of our club prepared to fight back when we have injustice thrown against us, someone that is not afraid to make change when its needed.

This is one thing I dont get. We keep hearing about assistant coaches / football department staff at Sydney and GWS cant afford to live there / have had to leave their families behind to take on the role. So why on earth arent we chasing them? To my mind, target either McVeigh or Montgomery as your senior assistant coaches, Wayne Cripps as your development coach (currently at GWS). Otherwise an Ash Hansen or Hayden Skipworth to be line coaches.

My wishlist is someone with experience, confidence, highly strategic, extremely demanding, and ability to think outside the box.

No Mr. Nice guy. But not a psychopath like Mark Neeld. Somebody who demands respect.

Maybe that guy is Buckley. But some of the other names being floated are pretty uninspiring. Both Walsh and Pyke were inspired, left of field choices. We need another

Dean Cox or Buckley

Left field wise , he’s a hard arse, won multiple SANFL premierships, not coached for a while and sure he dislikes AFL- Roy Laird

Why are people so high on Buckley? Buckley has been involved in winning a flag. His defensive game plan is exactly the opposite of what we need.

Cox, Kelly, Mcveigh, Mackie, Scott Selwood would all be better than Buckley

If you're looking at assistants, Ash Hansen, James Rahilly or Dean Cox would be the 3 to look at.

Dean Cox is the one who I think could really shake up the entire club.

I'm not sure Buckley is overly realistic, but if Roo wants to do something positive on his way out, use his relationship with Bucks to get that across the line.

We do not want another first time coach.

I say we go for Leon Cameron (coached a side to a GF and a number of premlins.. can get angry or try poach Chris Scott

Dean Cox might be good but no coach will be able to shake up this club unless he's given the authority to do it. Malcolm Blight was the only coach who ever came in with the kind of clout to be able to do that. Only a coach with a proven track record of success might be able to do that eg a Clarkson type. Anybody else will be hamstrung by the organisation around him.

Probably more a list post but:

Dawson
Rankine
Soligo
Rachele
Thilthorpe
Fogarty
Curtin
Worrell
Murray
Keane
Nankervis
Michaelanny
Cook
Pedlar

It’s by no means ‘perfect’ list but more than a reasonable starting base and something to excite potential coaches 👍 List is in a better spot when going to market than last time.

I hope the club aren’t put off by the lack of names and make the (obvious and correct call). Cannot afford to tread water any longer.

You're right we need someone who can stand up to our dysfunctional administration that has been a millstone to success.
That sort of person however can often has a very high opinion of themselves to the point that they think they can do no wrong and if it doesn't work out it's nothing to do with them but is someone else's fault. That's not who we want.

Someone who has the gravitas but not the ego, resolute but not stubborn, gels with the playing group but not afraid to have honest conversations and make difficult calls. A rare beast I think.

I think you have completely misread or do not understand the particularly latter part of Mcguires reign.

I can agree with your analysis to a point in his early years. The trouble is, that early success led to Eddie believeing that he had exceptional and by the end unique insight into how to run the football club, across the whole gamut of football operations.

His captains picks, often involving backing mates who were well past it but were known entities from his days immediately pre entry to the club, became a toxic legacy that engulfed us in shit we are still recovering from.

His autocratic ways were reinforced by removing any dissenting voices, meaning there were no effective checks and balances on his decisions and governance ceased to exist.

Some of his highlights

  • the protection of Buckley as a matter of personal honour
  • reinforcing that by quixotic decisions in football roles largely to support Buckley rather than put the best people in the roles (Eade, bringing Balme in then jettisoning him just as precipitously, crap assistants like your old mate Sanderson because they were Bucks buddies)
  • the disastrous Gubby Allen parachute in which cost us money, credibility, and some awful trades
  • ego driven trades getting increasingly destructive with Eddie overruling the football department. Treloar, Beams, the seven year Grundy millstone were all consequences of Eddies ego not rational processes.

Any sound familiar?

Sounds a lot like Roo with us! Did well with the Phil Walsh appointment and lived on it ever since and has gradually got more and more power over key decisions off field, despite some very poor results onfield post 2017.
