Collingwood coaching contender Don Pyke is officially out of the race for the job after deciding to remain with Sydney.
Pyke was at one stage considered the favourite to replace Nathan Buckley given his vast industry experience and his key role in rejuvenating the Swans’ ball movement in 2021.
But the Herald Sun can reveal the former Adelaide coach has told Collingwood’s coaching subcommittee that he will not progress through their process after initial discussions with the five-member panel.

Collingwood will still wait for a final answer from four-time premiership coach Alastair Clarkson, despite him suggesting he is ready for a 12-month break from football.
The Pyke decision is believed to be heavily influenced by his family and his determination to remain with the Swans as they finish building an impressive team approaching the premiership window.
Current Hawthorn assistant coach Craig McRae, already seen as a strong contender to secure the role, will now be seen as the man to beat in the race for the role, given a pair of exceptional interviews with Collingwood.
McRae, 47, has not only has experienced successful programs including Richmond, Hawthorn and Collingwood in a long coaching career, he has won a string of endorsements from senior figures at those clubs who believe he is a senior coach in waiting.
Collingwood’s caretaker coach Robert Harvey said on the weekend he would have discussions with Magpies football boss Graham Wright about his path ahead and whether he would be formally interviewed for the role after standing in for the past 10 weeks.
He was seen to do a strong job in helping to blood eight debutants, but he also has a number of suitors including West Coast if he decides to move clubs.

Speaking of people who don’t want to coach us. Fairly certain we’ve had 5-6 people come out in the last 24 hours who have stated we were never interested in Lyon, never even called.

I can’t believe the story him and Lyon conducted on Wednesday night. There’s a diagnosis for that.

Whilst I would love Clarko, I would also love McRae. Recent history has shown us that recycled coaches don’t always work. Haven’t the last 10 Premierships come from coaches who had no previous Senior experience prior to going to their club?

His manager read the tea leaves on it and smartly had Pyke withdraw. Anyone spinning this as a negative has NFI. You don’t go this far down the path to withdraw at the last minute unless you know you’re down the pecking order.

The badge was too big for Pyke
he has only worked at interstate clubs....says it all really.

He would have been swallowed whole under any sort of pressure here

Lol or he just doesn't want to coach a club that's in all sorts atm.

Let's face it with no picks, salary cap, aging stars and dramas at the top who would want this job?

I guarantee the coach picked will get 2/3 years coaching a team that will spend most of the time at the bottom, coach will do the hard yards then get sacked.

Whoever takes this job is being set up to fail because expectations will be high from day 1.

I would be happy with McRae, Seems he has done a great apprenticeship coached his own side, developed young players comes from winning cultures. And looking at it he played under Matthews at Lions and has worked under Clarko. So whilst a first time AFL coach, he seems like if appointed ticks all the boxes, the unknown is going to be AFL level but if the club get the assistants right seems like a good choice.

I'm telling ya, it's Clarko, if McCrae was signed and sealed then why are we waiting to talk to Clarko first. The fact that clarko is even prepared to talk say's he's interested right up to his eye balls

Due diligence, but Clarko ain’t coming to us.
