So having not sacked their coach yet who has a year to run on his contract, they are going to come out tomorrow and announce a new head coach. Interesting play by them.

Are they going to have both Teague and Clarkson in the same room when they do it?

Maybe its the Cerra contract they’re announcing?

If that is indeed the Clarko contract, Carlton are going to be in a world of hurt in 2 years time when they sack him after not improving and have to pay out his remaining contract.
Very good point in bold.

Carlton supporters are falling over themselves for Clarkson, but they still have a coach, and Clarkson would not be comfortable with Teague getting the chop for him.

Only one club has a current coaching vacancy.

If Clarkson ends up at Carlton and we end up with an untried senior coach it is a screw up on the board’s behalf. Yes, it could end up well for us but moving Buckley on was political as they thought they could land a big fish and save their positions. Instead it appears to have scared off a number of potential candidates due to the boards instability. Again, this a hypothetical because nothing is official yet but how this plays out will be very telling for the current board.

What the Buckley experience has shown is that it’s not just about getting the right coach, you have to get all elements humming to be successful. Unity and competence at board level. A footy boss and list manager that know what they are doing, a great recruiter, good fitness guy and a great list.

We didn’t have that for most of Nathan’s tenure…and I don’t think it would have mattered who we had coach, Clarkson or otherwise…it wouldn’t have worked. With Wright on board we are heading the right way.

Good point, you have to question a mans integrity, and whether in fact you want him as coach if he is willing to do that to a colleague.

Who was the big fish when they moved Buckley on? There was none in the ocean at that time.

Clarkson will sign with Carlton and Teague will find out via Heraldsun.com.au.....
That is my feeling as well. I think he hates Collimgwood. I sat near the on field coaching box in that 1st Preliminary Final 2011 when they lost to us. He was so pissed-off that he started punching the roof.

Due diligence, but Clarko ain’t coming to us.

+ could you imagine the pitchforks that would come out for Korda if at the Carlton press conference presenting Clarko as their next coach …

Tom Browne: “So, Alastair, why did you choose Carlton over Collingwood?”

Clarko: “Collingwood never called me”

Would have liked Pyke but not going to get hot under the collar because he said no. People forget these people have families, moving from Adelaide > Sydney, establishing a new life.

Swans going well, the motivation to uproot that for a club with the list that we have, isn’t appetising.

Sometimes money can be a powerful motivator.

Senior coaches probably get paid around 4x - 8x what as assistant does

Why?

Both have intimate knowledge of the list and deficiencies as well as strengths. We need to surround McCrae (if it’s him) with some experience.

I’m not a big fan of either but hear Harvey is very well respected and liked by the playing group.

Just doesn’t make sense to completely gut the coaching group given where our list is at. Why not keep at least one for another 12 months until the new coach has a grip on things.

agree - we need to consider retaining one, preferably Harvey, for the reason you outline.

Clearly enough mail around to indicate who is getting the gig …. Presumably it’s Clarkson, but not disappointed if McCrae is appointed

I’d be surprised if we got Clarko ahead of Carlton.

Carlton would be a much more appealing gig. Like us they’re a big, well funded club. But they’ve been an utter basket case onfield for two decades. Anybody who can turn that club around will immortalise themselves.

Collingwood on the other hand? We’ve been a basket case for 1 season and some of the natives want to trigger an EGM and take the club to the Supreme Court

This is the biggest town for footy...
This badge has a lot more expectation than any in SA...
In fact this badge here is one of the most scrutinised not just in a small country town....but nation wide.
Dont tell me Adelaide is a harder gig than Collingwood

I reckon West Coast and Adelaide would absolutely be the hardest coaching gigs in football. There’s nowhere to hide. No Richmond or Essendon or Carlton or Hawthorn or Geelong or, or, or, or, to push you out of the local news. And it’s not just club versus club, it’s state versus state.

Look at the feedback that Simpson has been getting over the last month, it’s been brutal. Admitted in a recent Press Conference that even his own wife wasn’t speaking to him! 🤣

Disagree in the extreme. Not a single person would turn around and say signing the greatest coach in modern football was ever a mistake.
What due diligence would be required when Wrighty would know it all?

It would be eyes wide open.

There’d be a lot more to due diligence than simply “Can this person coach?”

There’s also
“What are his expectations?” (Time frame of success, his reading of the list, etc)
“Will he be happy here?”
“What management structures does he need around him?”
“How would the footy budget be organised?”

It would be an incredible coup for the current administration and would be lauded league wide.

It totally would.
It’d really stick it to Carlton too!
It would dominate the news cycle for probably as long as a whole week
It’d bring a new energy to this off-season, we’d probably have the biggest crowds to an off season training session ever.
The AGM would be a love fest
The honeymoon will extend all through to round 1. And maybe for a little while after that, irrespective of onfield results …

… but when can we reasonably expect the club to start seeing some solid success again? And isn’t that what we really expect the decision makers at our club to be thinking about rather than that fluffy stuff above 👆?

Remember when Malcolm Blight went to St Kilda. He was the ‘it’ coach of the time, having won back to back Premierships only a few years earlier. It turned out to be an unmitigated disaster.

Not sure why the obsession with Carlton getting Clarkson. This isn't the first time Carlton have desperately thrown everything at an ex-premiership coach to "turn the club around", its never worked for them and its not our style. Carlton are also a revolving door for coaches, Clarko doesn't seem like a 10 year coach, especially given his apparent desire to travel. I'd give him 5 years or less at the Blues, in which time they still won't have a flag.

I would rather lock in a guy like McRae for cheap, surround him with quality assistants and build properly over 5-10 years. Not chase a quick fix like the Blues

He didn’t seem to like Carlton in the Bloodbath at The Oval in 87

I know who I'd rather coach out of the 2 teams, a team with McKay Weitering as bookends, a midfield with Cerra Walsh Cripps, forwards C Curnow and Jack Martin, Running Defenders Saad and Williams. Mark Neeld could coach this side to a flag. Of course I would love Clarko to come to the Pies, if he could get us a flag he will be hands down the best coach in history.

Exactly. It takes more then one person to win a flag.

He'd be one of the most admired and hated at the same time.
