Hoggs retirement was definitely unexpected.

Australia's spin stocks haven't been the greatest in recent times with the retirement of Warnie only just last year. MacGill with injury troubles and struggling to find form.

Who should be the next player in line to take Hoggy's gig as the ODI spinner?

Will the selectors go with the old but in-form in McGain? The workhorse in Doherty who can tie down an end but isn't the best of wicketakers? The forgotten one in Hauritz who has matured? Or the Cullen, the one touted as the next big thing by Cricket Australia last year?

"Other" ;)

I wouldn't pllay McGain in the ODI's anyway at the moment.... Tests for sure (until the likes of Cullen develops) but id be blooding the newcomers in the ODIs

I reckon "Other" could poll quite well here.

McGain had equal most wickets in the FR Cup from less matches & overs than the other 3 on 15.

Yes, he's 36, but he hasn't had the rigours of being on the first-class circuit for the last 15 years. If the selectors are picking on form - he's in.

If they go for youth, I'd say Cullen, Hauritz, Casson and even Doherty could get a run over the next couple of years in ODIs - though none of them should be let near a test arena in the forseeable future

I voted the X-Man.

But he'll get shafted by the 1 Tassie policy. Apparently being the best side in the country at the short version and reigning four day champs doesn't necessarily give you a look in. Quite pathetic really.

How is this a credible poll when you've listing 10 players, but the form spinner (by some margin) in the country isnt listed ?

Fail.
By some margin?

McGain and Doherty are equal on wickets with McGain averaging just 1.1 less and with a better economy rate by .02

That is about as small as margins get

Other. Bryce McGain will hopefully get a go, even if it is only a shorter term solution, because of his age.
Though I do think we will try out a few different spinners (Casson, Doherty & Cullen)

1. McGain
2. Hauritz - has been there and has done OK
3. Cullen - not until he stops pulling his sleeves up

Doherty has impressed me of late too - Tassie need to pull their finger out and play him in the Milky Cup.

Cullen has the best upside in my opinion. Considering the small margin between all bowlers, thats what i would base my pick on.
Playing in a weaker side has possibly hindered Cullen's development (and stats), while McGain has been part of a successful side this season. It'd be great to see McGain get a run for the Aussies, would be one of the more amazing stories in cricket. But at 35, I still have doubts on whether he'll get that chance.

Did 2 people vote Cam White as a joke? He has all-time ODI figures of 4/201 at an economy rate of 7! Not to mention he is coming off a poor domestic season taking 6 wickets @ 51

if the Pakistan tour goes ahead, i reckon you can bookmark it that McGain will be on the plane.

M. Clarke and Symonds for me. If they are picking someone purely as a bowler it has to be a wicket taker. I always see the one dayers as a development squad for tests so if McGain is considered too old for tests then there is no point. Is Hogg's retirement effective immediately or is he doing a Gilly and playing out the series?
