Silly by Carlton. Pick 12 is likely only a 50/50 bet to make it.

Whoever Carlton pick in the draft at 12 will forever be compared to the option of acquiring Dan Houston.
No pressure!

Brisbane won the flag this year with Ashcroft (2nd year), Fletcher (2nd year), Lohmann (3rd year), Morris (1st year). It is absolutely possible young players & recent draftees can take you to the next level.

There's more pressure on Collingwood to win a flag from this, you've literally traded away your future in the middle of an expansion club coming in, it's fairly ballsy. If it doesn't come off you'll look stupider than Essendon giving up the farm for Shiel, Stringer, Saad & Smith.

Sam Saad?

You have an elite talent who was a childhood Blues fan who wants to come to you. You think saying "no thanks we want to play the draft lottery instead" is the smart move?😂
A good starting point in these considerations would be "always play the odds"

Nope, we gave up pick 8 - and shock horror - it didn't elevate us into contention. Just like Houston wouldn't for us.
It might if he played like the old Saad and took the game on and broke lines with his run. Don't know what's happened to him since he went to Carlton. You've turned him into a stodgy back pocket.

You have an expansion club coming in, with this draft being the last uncompromised draft & you have no picks, you have arguably the worst under 25 list in the league and you want to trade out of the draft more because you think you can win a flag before 10 of your best 22 retire.

I'll remind you that 8 other teams went past you this year and you finished 9th, you're not just 1 player away from being better than Brisbane, Sydney, GWS or even Hawthorn & Port.

He will make you a better side, for sure, but if he's the missing link between Collingwood and a flag, I'll eat my hat.

He came to us and became an All Australian. Had a poor year like many of our other players.

'8 teams went past Collingwood in 2024', in the same way that '9 teams went past Collingwood in 2021'...

The Pies know what it takes to contend in the modern era, contending nearly as often as they haven't since the turn of the century.

Carlton meanwhile....

The players from 2021 will be 4 years older next season, they will fall off a cliff sooner or later. If you think the Pies will do a Geelong just remember they drafted some good kids as well as free agency and trading.

Yeah I wish Collingwood traded and drafted like Carlton. They are the benchmark😂.
What are we doing though? We should be encouraging them to go to the draft rather than take Houston.
Never interrupt your enemy when they are busy making a mistake!

We still might get Houston yet but we are not relying on it, you blokes are sounding desperate and only want him because you think it's a win over Carlton.

Post-2021 you landed a young Daicos and your fortunes were turned. You'd be bottom 6 if he didn't fall into your lap. Funny how young guns can take you to the next level, eh?

Houston will be good for the Pies, but again I'll remind you:

  • Your depth is already suspect, with your VFL finishing 2nd last
  • Your list is the oldest in the league
  • You haven't had any draft wins besides F/S & academy selections in a long time
  • You don't have a 1st rd pick this year
  • You have a 1st rd pick next yar, in a compromised draft, which you'll need to trade to get Houston, so you won't have any picks again
  • You finished 9th
  • You are basically throwing away your future and your best N Daicos years in the hope you go from 9th to 1st, somehow leapfrogging Brisbane who look like a dynasty squad.

Anything but a flag for this sort of strategy is a full-blown failure. I don't care how many close Prelims you lose.

They're impatient. They were the 1st of the 'big 4' to adapt to the modern era in terms of drafting, development, patience & professionalism.

Now they've gone full circle, with their President saying 'the draft is overrated' and their coach saying 'i want players not picks'. They're relying on father sons every 2nd & 3rd year to save them doing any meaningful drafting & the research that goes along with it, and they throw big money at every Free Agent available.

It will implode on them at some point.

The Brisbane Lions dynasty squad, who Collingwood have beaten the last 3 times we've played them, and 2 of the top 3 in their B&F are 35 and 31 years old?

Also, nice of you to highlight how much of a difference maker Daicos is. 👍

Surely Carlton of anyone know how hard it is to build a list to contend, so when you're at that point, you do it for as long as you possibly can.

Collingwood will be fine, just as we have been for the entirety of this century.

We literally had expansion teams affect two drafts in succession and nobody was affected. Why would anyone be scared of Tassie?

Don't you love the symmetry on display by Carlton supporters in this thread?

Carlton, who have been dismal this entire century, and have consistently shown they don't have what it takes to genuinely contend for a premiership, are on the verge of greatness.

Collingwood, who has consistently contended for premierships with every refresh of their list (never gone down the full rebuild mode), and in for a world of hurt.

LOL.

We as the destination club will just continue to pick off from those clubs whose salary caps are bursting at the seams who we need when we need them.
Poor clubs' supporters are already setting up Tassie to be the great cop out as for why their clubs failed for the next 10 years after they come into the league

Just a reminder , Brisbane are the current reigning premiers. Collingwood couldn't even get enough wins to play finals.

Trading away the future year after year rarely works. Even Geelong have been hanging onto their 1st rounders in recent years.

Never thought I'd see the day Collingwood fans do this much of a 180.

We were torched for years for not adapting to the modern era - ignoring the draft, buying players, third-party deals, taking shortcuts. Now the club is copping it for not buying more stars & prioritizing the draft, it's hilarious. Also we traded 1st rounders for Saad, Cerra & overpaid in FA for Williams - you want us to do it all again?

Let's hope Houston performs & stays healthy for the Pies, because this is a huge risk for them considering the tiny bit of draft capital they have.
"Even Geelong have held onto their first rounders"
Connor O'Sullivan - not in the team
Jhye Clark - not in the team
Max Holmes - gun
Cooper Stephens - traded and delisted
Sam De Koning - struggling with form, didn't play finals

Dude, Collingwood are probably the worst drafters in the league. Besides F/S & academy picks, it's been absolute rubbish for a decade.

The picks you're referring to:

2020:
Pick 17: Ollie Henry - requested trade to Geelong
Pick 19: Finlay Macrae - absolute spud who can't get a game & probably going to request a trade.

2021:
Pick 4: Nick Daicos - F/S - doesn't count.

2022:
Pick 19: Ed Allan - vanilla midfielder who can't get a game - again, spud.

At least Carlton can admit their youth is a bit bare at the moment & want to replenish that area before Tassie get in. Collingwood think they're Hawthorn or Richmond after their 3 flags, and we know how that ended up.
At least Henry was an astute pick in a horrid draft. Couldn't do much about the fact he only wanted to play with his brother. Ed Allan will be a jet; just focus on your Motlops, Durdins and Carrolls.

Lol, be more biased - 'ed allan will be a jet!!!11' - Carrolls VFL & AFL stats shit all over Ed Allen, but sure bro.
