So true 👍 and it’s happening again. All this player comparison of who’s A, B, C is fun for many on BF. Hawthorn players that play their role well are judged harshly ….. but not by our coaches and supporters! Internally at Hawthorn players are rated by our theme song:

“Team work is the thing that talks,

One for all and all for one

Is the way we play at Hawthorn.”

Don't forget that they informally changed the lyric to be:

"Is the way we are at Hawthorn.”

Specifically, to signify that the input of non-playing staff (coaches, medical, etc) is just as important as the players themselves.
The club website hasn't updated this (they should get onto that) but if you listen to the boys sing/shout after a win you'll hear it. Here is a clip from a few years back:
Hawks after win

Imo Carlton are a risk of missing the finals unless they have a good injury run as they lack depth.

For this reason I vote the Hawks who have addressed their main squad weakness adding 2 key defenders.

Our depth will be mostly unproven next season after moving on a fair few experienced players in the off season.

Will be interesting to see how they go in place of those we moved on

Close on the betting markets for the flag. Pick swap attached. Nice belting in round 22 likely making the Blues want revenge.

Wowee - this could be tense
Nice poll.

Both will be average in 2025 hawks got in everyones faces now made them a target.
Carlton will just be carlton and do carlton things
You should post another ladder prediction where Collingwood finish minor premiers and win the flag, Timmy.

Geez you love throwing mud at other clubs and posters to avoid answering a simple question.

Very consistent style I will say. Avoid the question and create a distraction.

So Newcombe would be the best mid at the Eagles? If he is it won't be for long.

What a high bar you have set.

He might be the best at Richmond too. The two last teams to win the spoon. Congratulations, quite an achievement.

As for recalling what I posted years ago. You have a better memory than I than I on that one. But saying someone may not come back from an ACL and play at the same level. Wow. That is really going out on a limb.

If you hadn't worked out I don't rate Hawthorn's midfield to date. They are improving. If Newcombe continues as the best mid then I wouldn't expect to be playing in too many prelims or GF's. In a team like the Lions or Swans he'd be #4. Carlton # 3. When it comes to the crunch like this year the better midfield prevails. And this year Hawks couldn't get it done against Port who were flogged the following week.

IMO Carlton has more quality and depth in the midfield. Most teams do compared to the Hawks. Can see Hawks doing a Crows and taking a step backwards next year. Will Barrass and Battle gel straight away with a different game plan, structure and teammates?

Development and improvement is not always linear, as the Crows just proved that.

That is my opinion. And its different to yours. That's life.
Newcombe's top level is better than Walsh, has Walsh ever taken a huge final apart like Newcombe did against the Dogs?, he backed it up the week after by being our best player in a loss. Walsh is consistently very good but I rekon he can't go up a level from here whereas Newk hasn't reached his ceiling yet.

Newcombe is a gun. Would take him at Geelong in a heartbeat, and him vs Walsh is certainly a worthy debate.

With that being said, that's probably not the argument you want to be using when Walsh has won a Gary Ayres medal himself.

He's proven he can play high quality finals footy more than once, just like Newcombe.

This is a good comparison as you have one team potentially on a downward spiral v one on the up

Simplistically, maturer lists generally do better in the season than younger lists. So I'd have the coin on Blues to be ahead
This is generally true except in the case where the older team's pinnacle during season wasn't that great

Walsh won the Gary Ayres medal in 2023...not sure what that says about finals performances or his top level...might say something???

Jai Newcombe plays one nice final against the Dogs and all of a sudden he's Brent Crosswell/Wayne Johnston...

For the first time in many years, Walsh is doing a full pre season...if his back holds up it's going to be exciting for Carlton supporters.

Blues made a Prelim final in 2023 and were 2nd on the ladder for a lot of the season up until round 20.

I'm not sure the Hawks who finished 7th and had a big melt at Ken Hinkley after losing to a Port Adelaide team missing their 2nd best player peaked much higher than that.

Imo Hawks go backwards this year and miss finals, Blues finish top 5 due to an extremely soft draw, but aren't seen as real contenders - a bit similar to Port last year.

Carlton have won 12, 13 and 13 games the last 3 seasons. Hawthorn ended up with 14 wins last seasons despite losing the first 5

Hawthorn were missing either their 2nd or 3rd best player as well
