Hard to argue with any of that.

Nice to see some unbiased, objective analysis.
Well, I'm gonna put a dampener on it.

Firstly, this guy reckons hawks are likely contenders, but didn't mention any other teams apart from Syd or Bris so not so certain of his credibility.

That's not a dig at the hawks btw, just no mention of other more obvious could be contenders. like the blose or freo.

Secondly, it has an air of 'planets aligning' as far as the Pies are concerned, everyone in form and we'll be able to regain our ball movement because of it. No in depth of the how.

Yeah, for any team to flag the planets do have to align, as it did (not quite but nearly in our flag year) for us.

So if Moore, DG etc. regain form, McStay stays on the park, Membrey has impact, Houston is even better than JFN, injuries are minimal and favourably timely etc. then yeah we're heavy contenders.

But like for every other contender, they're collectively a big if.

My God these Carlton supporters are precious...

How dare anyone regard George Hewett as a C Grader!

A Graders for Collingwood are N. Daicos, D. Houston, D. Moore (at his best) and J. De Goey (at his best). Moore and De Goey weren't at their best in 2024.

A B Grader would be someone like Tom Mitchell in 2023. 4th in Collingwood's best and fairest in a premiership year, and a great finals series.

Can you imagine the flak I'd cop if I referred to Tom Mitchell as an A Grader after his 2023 season?

Have George Hewett or Blake Acres produced anything near what Tom Mitchell produced in 2023?

Josh Daicos - 2023 All Australian and best and fairest in a premiership year. He needs to have more than one year like that to be regarded as an A Grader, so I have him as a B Grader (potential A Grader).

Bobby Hill has a Norm Smith Medal to his name, but he is not (yet) an A Grader - he needs more consistency to get to that level.

The problem with Carlton is how quickly they drop away after their best players.

Cripps, Weitering and Curnow are A Graders. Harry returned to A Grader in 2024, after performing below that level in 2022/23. Walsh at his best is an A Grader, but fluctuates with injury. De Koning is an emerging A Grader.

I'd class someone like Nic Newman as a B Grader the last couple of seasons. Saad was a B Grader but is declining. Cerra a B Grader when fit.

But I reckon that's it.

"My God these Collingwood supporters are precious"

Any chance we focus on 2025, rather than what players did in 2023?

Please tell us how Mitchells 2023 is "far better" than Hewetts 2022????????
Are you serious?

George Hewett finished 5th in the Carlton best and fairest, a team that finished 9th, and a fair way from the top few players. He didn't play any finals.

Mitchell finished 4th in the Collingwood best and fairest in 2023, in a blanket finish, in a premiership team. He was also one of our best finals players, and one of out best in a winning Grand Final.

Looks like Titch really one upped Hewett by averaging slightly more tackles, free kicks and clangers for that year but being behind in every other department...
he also got subbed off a lot when we were ahead to save himself cos of his age ,. good tactics, worked out in the finals dont you reckon?

Eh... Wtf does that have to do with anything? One went down injured.

The football they produced that year is still night and day in Hewett's favour.
uhh it means you are using different sample sizes. So he got a few possies early in the season. great. didnt help you in the end did he

Hewett isnt a "borderline starting player" - in 2024 he was dropped once to VFL and made a sub once and when push came to shove - a choice between Kennedy and Hewett- Kennedy will now be playing on ball for the doggies. I'll miss 'chugga' but Hewett is a better mid. Hewett's only issue is a chronic back problem which comes and goes and effects his performance accordingly - he is a vital cog in the Carlton on ball brigade as seen by his 2024 video- often the bloke that gets ball and gives off to advantage - good awareness - one of the smarter Carlton players under pressure.

A borderline best 22 player is never better than a c grader if he cannot get a game every week in a side that finished 8th
Some dickhead tried to make a HBF out of him when we had injuries, he's a B grader everyday of the week as a defensive mid.

Fadge... Tell me how Titch was statistically "far better" than Hewett that year? One finished 5th in 15 games played, one finished 4th with 26 games played. Using BNF comparisons are a complete waste of time.

In the games they played Hewett was better than Titch in just about every aspect.

whos spot is Jagga taking?

Yeah, I don't rate Cox or WHE as B Graders either.
Draftguru applies a rating to all players on each list. WHE a B, same as Hewett.

Carl Coll split below, which aligns with your position - Pies have much better depth (18 B+/B graders compared to just 13).

And Carlton went kids (D grade) instead of trying to get some more depth in to support their top line stars.

Carl - Coll

1 A+ 1
4 A 3
3 B+ 5
10 B 13
8 C+ 5
3 C 8
13 D 8
