You're bringing up s*** from 30 years ago and then playing the wreaks of desperation card 😂😂😂

Talk about a lack of self awareness.

Actually I raised the ‘Now’ and what the current AFL situation is in regards to Collingwood and Carlton Grand Final success is in the AFL. At this very moment. And by the way, it is impossible to speak about Carlton and Grand Finaks without discussing close to 30 years ago.

Had the pleasure of driving though collingwood yesterday. Show some pride in your suburb FFS and clean yourself up. It's makes Heidelberg West appear like toorak.
Sadly it's full of hipster Blues fans now (Carltonish tax laws favouring price hikes) and the old public flats are emptying out (Carlton supporting governments having cut the maintenance).

Back in John Wren's day the streets were paved with gold, or possibly awash with urine because of 6 o'clock closing.

That's the reason the old pubs have tiles on the outside walls. Knock off work at 5, tear down to the pub for the "6 o'clock swill", get tossed out and piss on the wall.

You can see it on the old Retreat (on Nicholson in Collingwood) or the Green Man on Lygon and Elgin.

Did you meet John Wren old mate?

Walshy not happy that when referencing Carlton and Grand Finals in the AFL era, we're by default talking about stuff that happened 30 years ago....

Whose fault is that?
You can only talk about 2 time frames:

1: 1965 to 1995 ("the rort years")
2: 2024 but not the last 5 rounds

Sad that some people have to wear blinkers to enjoy their club.

No but I had family doing "good deeds" in Collingwood, and my blackguard great grandfather likely placed a bet at Wren's SP, so my family probably knew him.

Wren is much derived, a poor boy made good. He had a dodgy brother and an illegal bookie shop, but he went straight and forced the creation of the TAB so poor people could gamble ths same as the rich people (they could bet in their clubs you see).

The commos hated Wren because he was Catholic. The Protestant establishment came to terms with him, he did business deals with the Baillieus and Myers etc.

Hardy was a lying dog, wrote Power Without Glory as a snipe because Wren wouldn't obey Moscow.

Very like Eddie actually, made his dough in a smelly industry but tried to be decent, and disliked by some from envy but also because he's not born to rule, and has worked a few rorts in his day.

He bought four flags for your dirty birders- of course he is a folk hero to the dirty birder. I admire your story writing and self serving narrative - you can excuse me for laughing at your attempted making of a Saint.

Why not just say that in tribal wars everythgn is always fair and right and what opposing tribes say about what is right or wrong is just blah blah blah..

No need to write nursery rhymes to justify the bought 4 flags- the only thing that matters in tribal warfare is - the flags. Wren is a legend and should be honoured for the flags to Collingwood- no need to lie about the manner- it doesn't matter.

See that is the difference between the Blue blood aristocrats of the AFL which is CARLTON and the rest - we dont resile or try to dress up the truth with BS. Arrogant proud and honest about the dirty business of scragging flags.

My great uncle would have known and met him. His name was Dookums Humphrey's and there's a few snippets on line on him back in the day wiping out Waterhouse up in Sydney. Plenty of dodgy operators back in the day..

Please get your facts right ……. It was 6 flags. 😉

Sorry who did Collingwood buy these flags from? Wasn't aware there was a flag shop. Carlton sacked 3 blokes for taking bribes in 1910 to play dead vs South but they didn't play in the GF.

Lies born of jealousy blight the soul doubly, and perhaps this is the poison that rots Carlton's soul. Unable to equal Collingwood fairly they resorted to flagrant rorting, and destroyed themselves as a tribe.

The Pies paid their players below market rate, and quite a few took deals elsewhere for this reason eg. Ron Todd, Fat Des Forhergill.

Guys like Charlie Pannam and Bill Twomey coached elsewhere as well, because Collingwoods reputation as a well run club made our player attractive candidates.

You can lie all you want about Wren but you're climbing into bed with that fleabag Hatdy. You know, the guy who exploited a remote indigenous community and used to profits to become a Nana Mouskouri groupie lol. Don't be like Frank Hardy.

Careful about identifying yourself online. Great detail though, it was a rough school.

Wren ran a pony track in Richmond and the races were reputedly fixed (which is commonly said about all raving, so par for the course) and employed toughs so local crooks didn't rob him or his patrons. Very likely bribed local cops (once again par for the course for lower class businesses, Victoria Police had a bad rep from the start and the current reputation is the best it's been really-at least were not NSW).

Not Thomas Shelby, but no Saint by any stretch if the imagination. A hard working bloke who love his community and wanted a bit of "legitimacy".

-edit wow Dookum is very well remembered in the betting community, apparently a legend. We are in the presence of racing gentry and I doff my hat.

he was an odd man, dookums. He raced many greyhounds on the side as well. He would do the form on Fridays for the Saturday city races, pin up his tips on the side gate for all the locals to see, so that all and sundry could attend with confidence.
My old man asked him for a loan to pay for a deposit on a block of land out north knowing he could pay it back over time. Dooks gave him a winning tote ticket he hadn't yet cashed and told him to head into Southern Cross for collect. I believe the only tote around at the the time. $6k cash later and block of land sorted. Gave it to him as a wedding gift in the end.
Never lived beyond his means, but he died with an extensive portfolio in Yarraville that his own kids were unaware of at the time.
It's interesting reading about him that's for sure

Like I said the bloke was a legend rorting the system for his tribe - wot a SAINT!

Good thing the AFL is such a clean organisation these days - protecting all and sundry from foul deeds and making sure that umps give Collingwood teams the rub of the green as they should.

Rort not detected. Tell me who he paid for us to win?

And don't say Carlton, the bribe takers were all sacked when we beat you in 1910.
