Of the 8 interstate clubs, only GWS and GC have decided to draft Victorians in the first round.

As a Swans supporter, there has been a definite trend to draft non-Victorian talent in recent years - can't comment on other interstate clubs.

GWS seems to be losing Victorian talent hand over fist, but this year seems to have doubled down. Will they learn that Vics are mummy's boys? With Archie Perkins admissions this year, will there be a spike in mummy's boys coming forward to quash any interstate drafting despite the documents they sign prior to the draft committing to the draft process?

Should Perkins have been made ineligable for the 2020 draft and pushed to 2021, where conceivably he would have been mature enough to be drafted?
 
Could be the fact that victorians didn’t play this year... but considering Vics normally have 60-70% of the talent pool some teams took the educated risks. Interstate teams may have thought it bridge too far.

Last year of the 10 (non-nga) interstate picks in the first round 8 were from Victoria.

At the same time Hately went back to Adelaide and walked in doing so.

I’m shocked that in a year where Victorian prospects didn’t play, teams chose more non-Victorian prospects. Shocked.

Is there actually a genuine trend, or are you imagining things? A photo in an abnormal draft year isn’t actually compelling evidence.

Academy picks aside:

The 2019 draft had 10 non-Vic selections in the first round. 8 of those were from Victoria.

The 2018 draft had 15 non-Vic selections in the first round. 9 of those were from Victoria.

The 2017 draft had 10 non-Vic selections in the first round. 6 of those were from Victoria.

There is no increasing trend. You made it up.
 
I know this is about the first round, but of the thirty players drafted from Victorian clubs twenty two went to Victorian clubs and eight went interstate. Of those twenty two who stayed in Victoria five were NGA tied to clubs and Archie Perkins well the less said about that the better.

In the first round GWS had three picks and took three Victorians, GC had one pick and took one Victorian all the other interstate teams with picks in the first round secured local talent who during this harsh year of pandemic they at least had a chance to see perform or football to a degree. Two of the interstate players taken in the first round were matched bids Braedon Campbell and Lachlan Jones so in effect the clubs involved were only matching and not actually selecting.

Everyone knows Victoria is the centre of the AFL universe and has recent strong history of providing the lions share of the drafted talent, even in a year when football was a big no no 50.85% of the drafted talent. Does this balance need to shift ? well that is an argument for another thread.

Quick bonus stat: Oakleigh Chargers x 6 players selected from picks 1-23 (fascinating), i love to analyse and see what programs are the hot beds for talent.

Sydney - best available was a WA kid then matching an academy bid.
Freo - best available was a home grown kid.

Port - no picks, matched an academy bid.
Bris - no picks
WCE - no picks

Gold Coast - took a Victorian
GWS - took 3 Victorians including one from Geelong and one from Melbourne.

So really it's only Adelaide that actively avoided Victorian kids at the top and it was to go local. Their best other options with the top pick were from WA or country Vic by most reports. And the Crows were clearly a unique situation being so keen to stop losing players as well as this unique year when they've had a much closer look at the SA talent than other clubs. Port Adelaide haven't struggled to retain Victorian kids and the Crows have lost players to everywhere really - Sydney, GWS, Gold Coast, big Vic clubs, small Vic clubs. Not sure Adelaide's draft is part of a bigger trend.

And Adelaide bid on a Victorian before selecting Thilthorpe. JUH would have been at Adelaide if he wasn't tied to Bulldogs.
 
Give it a few years.... by then we'll be talking about the Smith/Perkins syndrome.

The Swans (generally speaking) avoid Vic Metro players unless they are easily best available and have a really solid family. I think Brisbane favour VC to VM when possible too. The facts are Stephens comes from Mildura but had already been boarding in Adelaide. McDonald talked about repaying the faith and has been preparing himself for interstate living for months. It's no coincidence, its a necessity to over weight these things when you're a Northern team.

More interstate club will avoid Victoria kids at the top if WA ,SA , NSW and Queensland's kids at same standard available and Vic club at the bottom avoid drafting kids like DGB ,Jackson .

Rhyce Shaw, Ted Richards, Nick Smith, Alex Johnson, Dan Hannebery, Ryan O'Keefe, Josh Kennedy, Jude Bolton, Nick Malceski. 9 of 22 in the last Swans Premiership side form Metro Melbourne. More of them moved to Sydney than left Sydney.

Different era (when we had COLA) and for some of those players we were their second club.

The issue is current and i think it's obvious the northern clubs carry a greater risk by picking Vic players, specifically VM players.

The Lions just draft talent they’re last 2 first drafted players have been from Queensland and Western Australia
 
I have no probs with the crows picking local if they were the best or equal talent at those picks. They rated thilthorpe for years and pedlar was one they had hoped would fly under the radar but it didnt happen. Cook was a genuine 1st round talent and rowe filled a big void so i was very happy with how it played out.

Next year there are some super talented locals / interstaters but also a heap of talented vic kids so it is likely the 1st round next year will be mainly vic lads with a few interstaters.
