Wouldnt it help to get rid of some of the mindless booing? Or at least cut it down a little.... I was amazed after the carlton port game (which carlton just won and it was in melb) that the carlton crowd cheered the win but a significant portion spent their time booing the umpires off the ground. The carlton people arent the only ones that do this. They tell me it's tribal...
I've never understood booing the umpires when they walk out before the game. What's the point?

A son of mine used to play in a fairly upper middle class suburb. They used to play teams from the "other side of town" a few times. I'm not sure parents would feel comfortable reporting people that they dont know. To me, it seems even harder than to get the crowd to call out someone informally...
Last week a parent near me called out a decision and the person responsible wearing a designated vest came up to them and advised them to keep it down as the other team would get a free kick. They went pretty quiet after that.

Think it works.

evidently it's our right to do it...

i think i might have done it once or twice when i was younger and stupider, as a bit of a lark. But some people do it like their life depends on it... i hope i never get that low in my life

I didnt think that the person monitors their own team...

Yes each monitors own team, I think there would be trouble if it were the other way around given some of the teams my grandson plays against.

I don't understand booing against umpires or players.

this should not be a surprise if you just take a look for example at the abuse that comes re caroline wilson on here.

there is a distinct extra gendered element in abuse that comes to female participants in the footy universe that ranges from boorish to creepy

i think it's been said enough, but people who refer to umpires as 'scum', 'cheats', 'maggots', etc are in the exact same category. And people who actually believe that umpires are cheating (and/or are biased against Collingwod, etc) are dumber than a door knob.

It is okay to disagree with a decision, but to personally abuse an umpire for that is abuse.

It’s probably a spillover from Suburban Footy…Saturday afternoon entertainment.
A major outlet for the population to express themselves…an escape from the reality of work, tough economic conditions..two World Wars…& a depression. Plus the establishment of tribalism.
Similar to Saturday Afternoon movies or Vaudeville…the audience craves to have a villain to boo or harass.
The umpires & opposition suburban teams/particular players filled that role (& still do…Essendon supporters v Jack Ginnivan).
We still have a way to go.

Male umpires face the exact same abuse, many are threatened with violence or receive death threats. Same have had people follow them to the car park. This is not a female issue.

I wasn't an umpire but when i was 16 i was a trainer for the local football side. Did all the courses and was mentored really well by the existing head trainer who was ancient and had been there forever. i volunteered alongside a couple of younger guys for about 12 months. I dont recall them getting propositioned by the players (many of whom were twice my age), being subjected to endless sexual innuendo or indeed having players flash their dicks at them on the regular because apparently that was hilarious. Ended up giving up after the season because i was so uncomfortable. so no im sorry males dont suffer the exact same abuse

this is bigger than the afl

It's a bit of pantomime. Harmless fun in itself.

The issue and why there is so much anti-pc reaction is that we have thus lost the ability to differentiate between banter and abuse.

I've aimed a few barbs at Caro over the years but I think on each occasion it was justified (hopefully at any rate!). The way she demanded that Dane Swan stand down from playing footy over an unsubstantiated rumour was peak cancel culture garbage. And I personally feel that the chief footy writer at The Age should strike a much better balance between covering on-field and off-field matters. But I acknowledge that generally speaking she has excellent sources and the vast majority of the time she's great at what she does. And she's undeniably as tough as they come.

All that being said, the level of shit heaped at her based on her gender is revolting.

And her appearance - the 'witch' references.

No, the males just receive death threats and have people following them to the car park to punch on with them… so much better !

Extreme umpire abuse and harassment is not limited to females.

you don't think that people follow female umpires to the car park threatening to assault the sexually? get over yourself and your male privilege mate.
it attitudes like that continue to perpetuate the issues that highlighted in this report

Now you're moving the goalposts. Nobody is saying that umpire abuse itself is particular to women. People are saying that they are the recipient of unique, sexually violent abuse that their male counterparts are not (at least that I've not seen).

You realise people are perfectly capable of being upset at multiple wrongs at the same time, right?

Its a good point but if it's banter than it's boring banter. It's repetitive same ol same ol banter..... lets use the same line banter. I said previously in my stupid younger days I might have let out a 5 second boo and laughed, but this isnt what the boo squad is delivering every week at the MCG. For them, it's like the umpires have shot their mothers.

Personally, I think most of these people are pathetic and not worth worrying about. The internet age has made people super sensitive. So I dont disagree with you in some ways. However, the threatening stuff is another kettle of fish
