Why can't Adelaide retain players?

Dumbing it down to either money OR family is just as stupid.

Mahoney also said ours isn't the biggest offer he's received.

He said he'd stay if the Crows matched the offer. So, given the choice between Melbourne or Adelaide, he would stay with Adelaide if the salary was the same.

Therefore family is not a factor in his decision making as he'd be willing to forgo family to stay at Adelaide, despite being able to be paid the same at both clubs.

You've finished up with a few crackers from SA. Club did a lot of research on Burton, particularly his injury and rehab history. After taking Lever straight off of an ACL the club thought it prudent not to take the risk again. Phil Davis was also drafted after spending most of his draft year in surgery and then rehab. The club was clear that Doedee was a project player with some risk attached. They also felt the potential upside was worth it.

Most expect Doedee will debut next year. So he's just going to be a wait and see for now. A number of the SA players on Victorian lists were wanted, but if you don't have the draft pick you just have to move on.
I don't actually know much about Doedee - is he likely to fill Lever's position at all?

So why hasn't he gone to the highest bidder?

Wouldn't you think going to a gws or gcwould net you bigger cash?

As I said dumbing it down to either one is just stupid

I'm sure the whole pseudo state team thing is a part of not winning the hearts of the players and their families. I doubt the whole 'kick a Vic ' schtick doesn't go on much in house but the local media and a decent number of fans love trotting it out and a young lad from Melbourne isn't going to feel any connection with that.
It's not a bad point.

Possibly. He's similar but different, which I know makes no sense. Not quite as tall. Looks like he will be good down back. I have only seen a bit of footage of him playing SANFL. Some of the posters on our board who watch a lot of SANFL really rate him. A few thought he should have debuted this year.

Like most young players, you really just have to play them eventually and see what happens.

Please point me to the report suggesting that GWS or GCS have offered him more than Melbourne has (or that either club has expressed any interest in him). Stop creating strawmen arguments.

Do people really ask for imperial pints? Thats great. May use it
Quite literally only in South Australia. If you ever find yourself there and ask for just a pint, be prepared to have a schooner handed to you.

We re-signed him for 2 years. I assume that happened when we knew Lever was leaving, so I suspect they have earmarked him as some sort of replacement.

Just like my theory that Taylor Walker gets fisted at strats for a pack of winnie blues and a slab of VB?
:eek::eek::eek:

I don't know where Strats is but I 'll be sure to stear clear next time I'm in the the city of churches.

I didn't say they had, but they have more money than most clubs (gc specifically). This was a clear hypothetical

Mahoney said it's not the most lucrative offer on the table for him, that's reported, you responded to that with "yeah but he said if Adelaide pay him the same he will stay!"

Again, if it's just money why hasn't he taken the biggest offer?

Also where's it reported that lever said he will stay if you pay him?

Yep, nothing says crisis like finishing minor premier, making the GF and trading a player for 1 (and possibly 2) picks that are worth more than the pick that player was originally drafted with.
Yeah that's it. Crows will be fine.

We have a similar structure to Geelong and Hawthorn. I think our highest paid is 800k which is probably Sloane. We only offered Danger 1m or something and he's getting 900 at Geelong when he could go probably go for 1.3m+ elsewhere.

When Hawthorn do it, it's smart list management. When Adelaide does it, it's because we are stingy bastards.

Hawthorn and Geelong were doing it to keep the team together, though, and essentially succeeded. The Crows are losing good talent every season at the moment. No point using an egalitarian pay structure if it doesn't keep people around.

Aside from the pay structure, I reckon living in Adelaide would wear you down as a footy player. You couldn't get a moment's peace out in public. The footy media is as omnipresent as it is in Melbourne, but there doesn't seem to be a lot else happening for you to disappear into like there might be in Melbourne. Same would apply to Perth, though, I guess.

That said, I don't think Cameron and Lever are irreplacable. Honestly reckon Kelly's not far off Lever's output this year, and Cameron is icing.
