Why Does Brisbane Rarely Acknowledge It's Bears Heritage?

In 100 years people will still talk about the 3 flags and one of the greatest teams of all time. I'd be bringing that up over the Bears.

Yes, but that wasn't really the original point was it?

Chris Johnson
Brad Boyd
Scott Bamford
John Barker
Nick Carter
Jarrod Molloy
Shane Clayton
Simon Hawking

These are the 8 players that Brisbane inherited from Fitzroy. Johnson is the only one who played in the 3-peat, in fact none of the others made it to 50 games for the Lions - though a few did alright elsewhere. Barker was involved in the trade for Chris Scott, Molloy was traded for Mal Michael.

Interestingly, preferred and rejected merger partner North as well as Port probably did better out of Fitzroy's playing group than Brisbane did. North took 4 or 5 players with Pike and Clayton having decent careers and playing in the 1999 flag and Port picking up Primus and Paxman who had long careers there. Pike obviously ended up at Brisbane later on and had even more success.

Good point. Fitzroy had some players that turned out very decent but only one of them contributed at Brisbane

Add Jon Brown to the list

Depends how you look at it. Any club in the league could have had Brown as a 17 year if they guaranteed they were going to take him but they didn't, so he waited out a year and then nominated for father/son.

Given the team is still located in Brisbane, and the Bears had only been in existence for less than a decade (struggling through much of it), the Brisbane supporters of yesteryear really didn't lose much, nor was there much of a legacy really worth acknowledging. There was always going to be a far more concerted effort to recognise Fitzroy's heritage where possible to maintain a large portion of their Victorian fan base.

They don't acknowledge it for the same reason Hawthorn don't acknowledge anything before 1960 - it's embarrassing and they'd rather just forget it even happened.

Except that we do acknowledge it. The whole premise of the thread is wrong.

What do people want? Wawrick Capper cuddling a koala on the boundary ?
Now there's a stroke of marketing genuis! I want to see this - but only if he is sitting on top of the lion's cage which is towed around the ground by Angry Anderson driving a Batmobile!

So he waited out a year to be picked up by the Brisbane Lions, a father/son selection due to the takeover.

If it looks like a duck

Might be a good idea to watch JB on "Open Mike" where he talks about how he ended up at Brisbane...

IIRC (correct me if I'm wrong TBD) Hawthorn told him they were taking him, then backed out, so he decided to wait out the year and go under the F/S..

..so if Hawks hadn't reneged, he would've been a Hawk.

So did he go to the Lions under the father/son rules? His old man was a Fitzroy player...

You lot are funny

I didn't say you were wrong, I just pointed out that you obviously didn't read my post because you asked in your reply " so did he go to the Lions under the F/S rules"

I clearly stated in my post that you were replying too, that he did.

....over to you sunshine.

So what's your problem? I stated that he went to the Lions as a father/son selection due to the fact that the AFL gave the Bears the Lions. You came in suggesting something completely different.

So, really, it's over to you, please enlighten me.

Nobody acknowledges my bear heritage either. This bloke asked me, "Who are your ancestors?" So I replied, "Fourbears". He says, "No, not your forebears, your ancestors." I said, "Look, I already told you- four bears."
