Who knows, does it really matter.
He doesn't always , it would probably only be 60/40 if that.

no i just wondered - thought there might be some particular reason, just wanted to find out thats all.
He's just a try-hard Steve Silvagni.
Always wore them in Canberra as a young lad. Just used to it and in the serious Melb winter he just feels at home in them.

I kind of wondered that too...must be some reason..he looks like the kind of guy that would get cold pretty quick...from our guys brent staker wore the long sleeve for a long time..Staker has actually become a better player since he dropped the long sleeves

Rioili wore long sleeves too...to cover up the lards of fat hanging off his arms
Silvangni was another he wore long sleeves also a lot of his career
White from Brisabane did too...he was skinny also

Brett Allison used to always wear long sleeves. Apparently is was for better ball control because with short sleeves it's harder to handle the footy when it's bobbling around on your sweaty, slippery skin. His words, not mine.
The King of long sleeves was Tuck though. Did they ever make a short sleeve Hawks jumper with number 17 on it while he was playing?

Only time Tucky wore short sleeves i can remember was the 87 GF , i reckon Hird wears long sleeves for the same reason - skinny arms and lets face it he's still a champ despite not having the "guns" other players have got.
If he grows a beard do you reckon he might go around again next year ?
I would say because he probably get cold. Doesn't wear them in summer

Jimmy has always worn long sleeves. He got used to them playing during cold Canberra winters for Ainslie Football Club.

I doubt he wears them because he is cold, once you start running around out there you get warm fast, maybe at old arctic park you might have needed them.
When it gets warmer he wears short sleeves, because he doesn't want to overheat.
Some people just like playing in long sleeves, i never did, more jumper to tackle, plus more restricting.

Tucky wore short sleeves in the '87 GF, because it was about 40 degrees that day.
He wore long ones because he suffered from allergies when his arms were covered in grass and mud residue.
Whether Hirdy suffers the same fate, i don't know.

A few years ago someone asked him this question and he said he liked wearing the long sleeve because he thought his arms were a bit like chicken wings so he keeps them covered up.
I must admit, he does look funny when he wears the short sleeve.

Andrew Jarman was another who liked the long sleeves (he also at times had the socks over the knees - I assume that was to slide in on).
Maybe Hird wears them because he played a lot of footy in the ACT (I think that is where he was recruited from) and there it is v.cold during footy season so he got used to wearing long sleeves and now he does it because it is what he has always done?

I think it's a combination of cold canberra winters, skinny arms and habit.

it's his personal choice and comfort.
players have their own styles........some play socks up, others choose to be gay and play socks down..........some tuck their guernseys into their shorts, others don't.
