Why does state of origin work for Rugby?

Because AFL CLubs think of nobody else but themselves and don't allow their players to entertain the public.
One of these days the AFL and the 16 clubs will realise that football is an entertainment, not a sport.

We can't play soccer in Asia - we tried and they won't have us.

I would say the real strength of soccer is still in club football - that is where the real passion is. Man U (well Alex ferguson anyway) would love to see the Euro Nations Champs abolished.

Same in footy - I really don't give a toss about NSW - I support the Tiges (although I might be better off with NSW :D )

watching 2 afl teams playing each other is hardly atmosphere

Right.... Ok, you obviously have some bias in you, which is fine. But dont claim that there is no atmosphere in 2 AFL teams playing each other. You have not seen Adelaide V Port, Freo V West Coast, or any of the Melboure 'big 4' playing each other.
Either that, or you dont understand the concept of atmosphere.

whereas being at lang park or telstra stadium and being in a capacity crowd watching 2 teams that absolutely hate each other

now thats amazing

Watching QLD play NSW in RL SOO at ANZ stadium was hardly atmosphere either. It was dismal.

Pull your RL loving head out of the sand and face up to the reality that AFL, especially in SE QLD is becoming a well watched and supported sport. If you want to see RL suffer because of that, then keep going the way you are, and remember.........it was ONE vote...........only ONE vote that got RU and RL into the GPS school system here instead of Aussie Rules some 30+ Years ago. Had that vote gone the other way, things like SOO for RL would be a figment of peoples imagination! Forget that fact, claim all sorts of of RL and RU Heritage and you will be helping your code begin to crumble.

BTW, anyone else see the irony in this. QRL (Queensland Rugby League) head office is in Vulture Street, Woolloongabba. In a building known as Gabba Towers. Which is infact attached to .....yep you guessed it.........The Gabba.

'cos the NRL comp itself is not overly strong or very well supported. AFL is a truly national comp - well supported where a single attendance at an MCG game is likely to exceed to total NRL weekly attendances.

Since the inception of the AFL - we are getting interstate rivarly on a weekly basis which voids the need for Aussie Rules SOO.

Plus our game is typically played at a high standard whereas in NRL apart from a handful of games during the year - only the NSW v QLD SOO produces a high intensity and standard game worthy of watching in high numbers (which is also reflected in TV ratings).

The inferiority complex explanation for Qld is close. It's more the other side of the coin though, the NSW superiority complex. Qld gets less players in the test side and always has. NSW lured many Qld stars interstate and then selected those players to beat their own home state in interstate matches. That sort of thing burns deep.

The assertion that Qld have a long way to go to match NSW is silly to the extreme. They have held the SOO title for the past three years and have lost it dismally this year. Consider the loss of a few major stars to Rugby Union from a state team with significantly less player resources to draw on. Consider that the two teams are 100% even as far as games won and series won over 23 years with game 3 coming up being a tiebreaker. Fact is that Qld have done so well as underdogs for so long because of this perceived NSW superiority and are starting to fade a little because NSW have tapped into that passion and lost their superiority complex.

Rugby League ratings are still strong and for the most part outstrip AFL in QLD (the main reason AFL fans get such shoddy treatment). The atmosphere at ANZ stadium was not as good as Lang Park but at the pinnacle of the game it was still intense. I remember the Super League SOO series a few years back. Fantastic atmosphere.

I kind of agree with the idea that South Australia took SOO more seriously than Victoria and that was also the case with Queensland until they started winning consistently and the NSW team and fans felt humiliated enough to treat give the occasion more respect. It's funny how many NSW fans I know that when they lose, tell me that it hardly creates a ripple in NSW (silly little game for Qld'ers with no life"), yet when they win, they are all over it and gloating again.

In League NSW had to be faced with being considered inferior to Qld at the top level (not competition level) before they helped raise the bar. For this reason, it is up to Victoria to put their reputations on the line for the SOO cause and risk losing now and again. Sitting back thinking they would be better off not playing so their superiority remains intact doesn't help anyone. SA and Vic particularly have a huge rivalry and SA are not going to acknowledge Victorian superiority unless they continue to prove it in the SOO arena.

The one missing ingredient in my opinion is the whole state against state, mate against mate thing which is the key. Right from the start of league SOO, club teammates have bashed each other playing for different states. See Mick Devere in game one play against 11 fellow Broncos in Qld guernseys. He got hammered several times and had his forehead stapled on the field and a few days later is backing up to play with these guys. I have never seen teammates hate each other so much playing for their states in the AFL equivalent. It seems that AFL team unity is far more important than league team unity as AFL relies more on those one percenters that can change the course of play and every one being switched on for a longer period of time. Could be wrong but ramifications of a hard hitting league SOO are all forgotten as soon as the game is over but not sure that would be the case in AFL.
