Fresh water and salt water have different density and in a lot of tidal rivers they do remain separate with fresh water sitting on top. Might have been a pretty handy survival tip in a world where fresh water was regularly scarce. However, the bigger issue is that you're doing what the fundamentalists of both Christianity and Islam do and use their own modern literal interpretation of scripture - ignoring the centuries of agreed meaning by scholars who study scripture and related texts for decades.

Not just with the density factor but also with the reality that rivers and seas are connected but one is fresh and the other salt. Meanwhile, the verse was most likely a metaphor anyway.
