I hope the club sticks with him, and I hope to be able to quote all of you lot when he comes good.

He's absolutely without confidence at the top level at the moment. We know that he can play, he has done so in the past. Maybe he needs a spray, maybe he needs a one-on-one in-depth discussion with a senior player like Glass or Waters...get him in the right head space, he will return to the player we know he can be.

Haha I'd love to see my quote in two years time. I hope he comes good just to see my shit backfire.

My main issue with Ash is the fact that he is built like Tarzan but plays like Jane. He runs around packs instead of through them, not to mention how easy he is worked off the ball be even the smallest whippet.

He's built well, has pace and a booming kick - but it is all worth nought if he doesn't have mongrel
i dont understand how all of a sudden he has lost pace. Was he wearing the rubber stops on his boots in the wet today or something? Seemed to be running on a treadmill when chasing the ball/opponent.

Is missing targets on a regular basis too, particularly when it comes to the length of a pass. Instead of hitting a leading target on the chest his kicks often go over the head of our players. Im an Ash Smith fan but another performance like that and he should be dropped. Hopefully he can find some confidence with our soft draw over the next few rounds.

Had high hopes for the guy but he seems to be going backwards.

Seems lacking in intensity and tactically naive.

Unless he can address these areas, I think Schofield and Brennan are better options for the small forwards.

Smith was poor again on the weekend.

For a guy fighting for a spot in the 22 and getting a run while our backline is injured, his attitude and dedication on the field is horrible.

On the weekend when we were trying to get out of defense, twice smith marked the ball from a kick in, didnt look up quick enough or choose to make a bold move to get us into attack or even use his best asset, his run and speed.

He chose to kick it backwards to Adam carter, the first gamer, on the last line of defense.

Neither time did he do anything to help his team out again let alone the first gamer, he just stood there like his work was done.

Other times in a chain of play, his pass set up some of our other blokes. A guy like darling or Kennedy with heart would try to make up for his mistake, again smith just drifted off screen.

When the ball is in defense to be won, a position on the field where an extra bump, punch or tap can move the ball from danger (see glass and mckenzie), smith just refuses to do the one percenters.

I'm not sure if these small acts are not of his natural instinct, not within his brain capacity to think of it on the field, or not within his care.

Other times up the field the ball would be somewhat there to be won amongst a pack and he is happy to drift on the outside looking for the cheap kick.

Never blocking, never diving for a smother, not even some extra perceived pressure just even to lie to people that he pretends to give a shit.

Players should be giving 100% all of the time, especially those fighting for a spot, even more especially those who are making the mistakes costing the team out on the field.

To have that sort of hairstyle and tattoos is a personal choice. Fair to say one would have to be fairly flamboyant and out there to choose to look as eccentric as smith does. None of these qualities reflect on the field whatsoever though, except being cocky enough to tell everyone he plays AFL.

Yet he'll get a game ahead of Wilson because he's less likely to get burnt by a forward for pace and endurance.

He wasn't horrible on the weekend as he did a pretty good job on a number of different players like Mayne, Mundy and Fyfe. He had two pointless hand passes on the wings when he should have kicked it long, both times he laid a shepherd but he wasn't alone in over using the ball on the weekend. His worst effort was in the middle when Smith, Rosa and Priddis all ball watched and Freo got an easy clearance.

As it stands he didn't cost us on the weekend, no more than anyone else and your objection looks to be more of a criticism of his style more than anything else. He's a shark, he's not a natural body player but has consistently been solid in one on one situations. Can be very damaging when he gets a lot of the ball as he has in the WAFL. He just needs to better balance defense and offense at AFL level, something that comes with improved experience and maturity.

Meh, he can dress and look however he wants but i tend to agree with a lot of what Joey is saying.

That many times i'd notice Smith just jogging around nonchalantly when he's smack in the middle of a high intensity bit of play from both teams fighting for some contested ball.

He never runs more then 5m without kicking the footy so his pace offensively is not utilized whatsoever at the moment.

He's got the talent, it's just finding out the best way to unlock it. I can't recall too many players being so casual like Smith, bar Jarred Brennan who despite being casual, uses his talent to be the best player on the ground on occasion.

Delisting is not an option. I think he just needs some more experience and confidence. He really needs to cut sick against some poor team that we are flogging and start showcasing what he can do more often.

He was very good against Essendon.

EH sums up his game well against Fremantle. He was solid, unspectacular, and because of his body language and approach to playing half-back tends to sit off packs at times which can be misread as laziness.

He strikes me as the sort of player who is still learning when to use his pace and flair effectively. His problems in the past have involved over thinking his ball use. He's a lovely kick when he doesn't over-think his kicking.

Given all his problems involve decision-making and application in pressure situations, he's only going to get better through repeated exposure to AFL matches.

In 2008, I thought Smith was a good prospect. I still think Smith is a good prospect. If he's improved it's incremental. Should he be more advanced by now? When I watch him play these days, I find myself thinking he has all the assets, but just has NFI how to play football. I hope he comes good, because he has rare attributes.

Comb over and tats don't count.

Pace, thumping kick and he is actually quite calm in high pressure situations. People say he doesn't use his pace. What they should say is he doesn't run with the ball, because he does use his pace when he chases and it allows him to play wider of his opponent than usual. Anyway, I'm not trying to mount a case for him, I think he's underperformed compared to where I expected him to be.

Hmm, all I see in high pressure situations (when he has the ball) is him implementing his "thumping kick" to detrimental effect.
