Carter and Wilson on debue have played better games then I ever recall Smith playing. Brennan has had at least as good an introduction then Smith.

Little disclaimer being it's hard to see a more defensive game on the TV, he may of played a better lock down role... but I doubt it.

I don't see why he is at HB seems more like a HF to me... play the Nicoski role and actually use his pace a bit.

I have been a critic of Smith but I thought his game against Essendon a few weeks back was arguably his best game for the club. Perhaps his shut down job of Brad Green in 2011 eclipsed it.

The Freo game was average, not as poor as his first effort against them.

We don't exactly have a bounty of high quality flankers forcing him out at the moment - so whist Waters and Hurn remain out he has weeks to get continuity and show his wares.

Smith is a better player, now and long term, than Brennan, and arguably Butler, and has more versatility than both. He looked to be playing on the wing for part of the game on the weekend too.

Mid 2011 he looked to have it all going for him, good one-on-one against smalls and talls, pace, good kick, and in the game against the Blues kicked 1 if not 2 goals. It all looked to be going really good for him.

Despite a temtation to trade him, I think we would get unders for what he could one day be. I'd be inclined to keep him on the more I think about it.

Looks so laconic and average when going , His body size still isn't helping him, easily pushed off balance,
lacks class or finess , worth persisting with since hes contracted for another season.

All-Australian, premiership player Chad Fletcher?
The very same.

He just isn't that good defensively. He would be worse than the entire options we got for down there. Maybe not Selwood (but that's only due to leg speed rather than skill).

Now you can get away with being poor defensively if you add something incredible like speed and disposal. And he use to show promise in this department early in his career, but not in the last 2 years.

I honestly thought he was going to be part of our best 22 back in 2011 and be part of our premiership push.

I would be surprised if he is on our list in 2015.

Reading this thread, a lot of people were high on Smith after the 2011, he managed the first 5 games of 2012 and looked good, then he got injured and hasn't been able to string 3 games in a row. Any young player needs more then 3 games in a row to show what he is made of. It takes time to adjust to the afl speed coming in from the WAFL, getting confidence in your skills at AFL level and getting confidence for your body to stand up to an AFL game. The last time Smith got a decent run he impressed most of the people posting here, let him have that chance again, if he is disappointing after say a 10 game stretch then criticise him

My personal opinion of him is he needs to improve his one on one game, judging from interviews I've seen from him and the coaching staff, it is the main part of his game they are getting him to work on. I think his kicking is decent but like all players it could improve. I think he also needs to take the game on and use his pace. Most importantly the match committee have given him a gig in rd1 the last two years, so they must rate him pretty high
