Either way, you wouldn't find Smith putting in HALF the effort Brennan did chasing Franklin and Rioli in that last hawks game.

What do you expect he would have done?

The best thing Smith has EVER done for mine was against the giants where he took that mark, turned and then twisted around and sprinted past Palmer to bag himself a sausage roll. It was really impressive. 1 time where he grew some nuts, took the game on and used his pace

Ok, but just know you're wrong, it's not the best thing he's ever done. The best thing he's ever done is string multiple games together where he's been defensively sound, kept a dangerous forward in check and hit the scoreboard from the half-back line. Re-watch the 2011 game vs Carlton.

I HAVE watched that game, jesus how many times are you going to bring it up?

"Guys guys guys the game against carlton guys, the game against carlton, he always hits the scoreboard, the game against carlton"

We get it, he kicked 2 goals that game. Good on him. Obviously according to you that justify's his spot in our best 22 for ever then.

Are you actually saying that he is equally hard and puts just as much effort in as Brennan? Have YOU watched the eagles best 1%ers video for 2012? It's basically a Jacob Brennan highlight real.

The talent is there, we've all seen it before. The issue for him is trying to beat out the seasoned players and true footballers ie: Butler, Selwood in that small defender category (perhaps mid height not really small) despite being a lot more athletic but besides those two there's also players like Waters, Schofield, Hurn and players who could possibly cover such as a young guy like shep, who isn't as good defensively imo but is a safer kick and takes people on with his legs.

It would be great to see him dominate and tear a game apart. Don't think he has ever done it, which is reflected by his 0 career Brownlow votes. He'll probably always just be a fringe player.

Sometimes a player can be pigeon-holed too soon. He has some good assets, it might just click for him. I was watching some early games from last year and Smith was pretty useful. Coaching staff seem to see something in him.

Cale Morton hopes Smith plays more than 50 games, just to take the scrutiny off him

I know it's nab cup and that we played shit as a team, but I was disappointed with Smith. Half-hearted attempts at the footy and lazy kicks off a backward step isn't what you like to see from a player who is on the borderline of the 22. He ran a 2.80s in the 20m sprint and he can kick far, and that's what we hang our hopes on. But it's not enough for me. Effort and decision making has to improve. He needs to use his speed - which he rarely uses offensively. He played well in 2011 and I think he got a bit disgruntled in 2012 (iirc an odd twitter description). He needs to put his all in and demand a spot, he's not entitled to one just on potential.

Yeah did notice a contested ball situation tonight where he had the option to go in hard and attack the contest but instead stopped and waited to tackle ( which was half assed and slipped out of easy)

Clearly improved as the game went on, his one-on-one work is very sound, just needs to learn to switch on for longer periods.

His skills are steadily improving as well.

Clearly will be starting the year in the WAFL, but I am not writing him off.

His one on one play is good but when it comes to team balance he's then really competing with hurn or waters and he doesn't have whats required to be either of them. While fast he just isn't agile, it is very important along with his lack of ability to read the play ahead of him. He may yet prove serviceable as a mid sized defensive stopper but thats his only potential role imo. Playing against a betts, rioli, krakeour type or a goal kicking mid he will get destroyed.

On tonight's effort - you wouldn't think he will get another game. Was downright lazy. Gift wrapped Collingwood when he pinpointed a pass to them resulting in a goal. If I recall correctly, Embley shanked a kick in a final last year under pressure, and a lot on here thought his card should be marked - in which case, Smith's should be too. Embley also has a lot of credits in the bank due to his career thus far. Smith should be gone at the end of the year - surely we can offload him to someone over East.
