Would you revolt if your standard of living was maintained but democracy was replaced by an authoritarian system?

This might sound a bit off but, to me anyway, democracy means less than human rights and a minimum standard of living. I don't like autoritarian governments who keep the jackboot heel squarely in the face of their citizenry but if a government were to rise that maintained a reasonable standard of living and guaranteed human rights for all regardless of race or culture or sexual preference I honestly don't think I'd care if I never voted again.

Absolute benevolent power though - it hasn't worked that well yet in human society. More importantly, I don't think it would be allowed to work by the current status-quo.

How are teachers who stay at home going to be seen when their counterparts interstate are back at work?

No doubt those recording this shameful episode will seek to extinguish the remnants/ ignore it.

Some of us remember the selfish wharfies & posties of the Vietnam war happy to use the Diggers are collateral damage for their miserable political protest.

Letters from our families and friends
Tell us of the normal lives
We left behind
Football and cricket scores
A new baby born, graduation balls.

The postal strike cause some delays
To beer and food supplies
I cannot eat the cake mum baked
It’s way too far past its use-by date.

In the distance, someone shouts
‘When I get home I’ll punch a postie.’
And the second grunt replies ‘I’ll wallop a wharfie.’

The postie sinks from number one to ten.

Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War was wrong. 100% wrong. This is not meant to denigrate the people who fought over there - many of my friends have fathers who are Vietnam veterans - but they were military tools that were ill-used by the politics of the era. Just as I protested the Iraq war in 2003 I most certainly would have protested the war back then.

And found a way not to fight it, defying the government of the era.

Hopefully you wouldnt P155 on a serviceman for doing their jobs, some had lost the lottery. Being used & abused by fellow Australians is below contempt.

Not sure how you conflate these bottom feeders with protestors. Nothing excuses these people, sadly history will try & hide them.

All authoritarian regimes are introduced under the auspices of being benevolent - for the people. But once that regime is in control the people lose the power to remove it if it turns out the regime is not so benevolent.

Nah, never. They were (and still are, for the ones still with us) human beings just like me. As I said, I know a few. Some of my friends have fathers who are vets. I know that a serviceman's lot in life is just 'do', not 'question'. I also know that an army without orders does not march.

The people who sent them? The suits who would never be in harm's way? F*ck those guys.

You missed the gutless wonders, the P155rs, beyond contempt !!

Definitely misguided. I mean, some of the strongest anti-war voices actually CAME from returning vets, horrified at what they'd seen and done. To alienate such a group only makes your own position that much harder to fight from.

So yeah, f*ck them too.

P.S I think you're allowed to type 'pissers', just not the 'f' and the 'c' words. Fair enough if you're being polite though:thumbsu:

Lock down followed by massive pay cuts for ordinary workers, who then have to repay the massive debt to preserve asset values.

How dumb!

It wasn't the taxes themselves so much as they were getting taxed without having any kind of a voice/say in how they were governed. 'No taxation without representation' was the catch-cry I think.
Yes you are right there is much more to it all than the tax , to the King and the government, the continentals were just another cash cow supplier of money !
And they were the autocratic rulers, so it was unfair all around. Rebellion in the air then George 3rd went bonkers for awhile.

I feel for the kids being born into $1 trillion worth of debt. That's a lot of money to preserve a few politicians careers.

Then add the state debt they are burdened with to repay.

There is plenty of consensus amongst the politicians. Wisdom on financial matters will on display looking back .... thats the political class/commentators at their very best, more often in line with a political ideology, the rest of us have to vote in the mob to govern us.

I'm no fan of asking our kids to pay off my debts, more so my grandkids ...

No because those who have money will not rise and those who have nothing will don't know whose cages to rattle..

Are people ignored or are they just waiting for those who have something to say to say something.. More later..
I have to get something to rev me up... uppity up.. Like a Mary Poppins.. I am here for all children who can't speak
for themselves...

Nothing will come of the riots as "the people" don't know what the issue is, why the issue exists in the first place and how to remedy the issue. I don't believe the issue is racial discrimination alone but something far deeper that can't be resolved whilst the country the United States continues to exist.

Let's take a step back here.........Floyd is a known criminal, who spent 5 years in jail, including offenses of violence, use of weapons and drugs. Thus cops using force to protect themselves is not unreasonable as Floyd is known to be armed and many of the citizens and criminals carry guns. Nor is it unreasonable for cops to not listen to his pleas, as criminals lie all the time.

Now don't get me wrong, the actions of the cops was grossly wrong and I hope they are convicted as murderers.......however their actions are not unreasonable for given the state of US society.

So if the cops actions are not unreasonable, what is going wrong?

For me, the United States is a poster child of when you "win a war" you actually "lose a war". Winning dependence and winning the frontier wars left the US with the right to guns. Winning the civil war and the issue on slavery, left the North on the high ground on race but allowed segregation and institutionalised racism to continue. Winning WW2 left them with an economy that is built on a war machine, Winning the cold war has left the United States allergic to anything socialist such as health care, minimum wages, worker rights and social safety nets.

Add that up........Floyd and many others are born black, receiving below average education, faced with a life on minimum wages as a ceiling and turned to drugs for short term reward.

Floyd steals to feed his drug habit and perhaps even a buzz in life where he felt he was more than a minimum wage man.

He goes to jail only to set a course to his fateful day.

Meanwhile the cops who probably started life no better than Floyd, just dumb arses with limited opportunity in life and score a shit paying job to deal with shit people every day. Time after time, they are faced with shit people's lies, shit people's actions including guns and violence. As a result they probably have PTSD, hate their jobs, hate their lives and definitely hate their "customers".

Then on that fateful day they treat Floyd, who was probably already dying, like shit and the rest is history.

So for me, unless the US sets decent minimum wage, introduces proper social welfare safety nets, introduces education systems that deliver respectable outcomes, reduce discrimination and get rid of guns................then this will happen time and time again.

However is the issue is so deep and complex, the people will never achieve anything positive from rioting. Unless the United States breaks into many new countries and can separate themselves from the history that has scarred their history and culture.
