Moin your alive!!!!!

welcome back!!!!

Romsey eh???

what else can the oracle of the forum tell us?

What else do I know??

* Upwey isn't a great place to spend a cricket Grand Final when it rains for 2 days. Those away rooms really do smell bad.
* Gembrook is the coldest place in Australia. Or maybe it was Silvan who had gone cold after I saw them play there (and incidentally haven't won a game since).
* Gembrook also may be having an expensive season in the bottom half of the ladder from what I saw.
* Upwey are awesome (nothing nobody knows already), but the ease in which I saw them kick about 8 goals in 10 minutes a few weeks was scary... It would have been great to see the Upwey of this year play the Silvan of last year or two.
* I also know that things must not be all that cheery over the spur this season. Reckon last year about this time both sides would have been undefeated - how 12 months changes things...
* Good to see the short bloke umpiring decent footy again after his "Club Ump" season last year. I'm sure plenty of players would agree too. Also - ask him where he spent this weekend!! - (Stuck in a hotel room at Surfers watching the Tsunami pour in...) - poor bugger picked a great weekend for a romantic getaway up to the Goldy without the kids.
* Monbulk lights aren't great and even with the car lights on, I didn't see a thing after half time on Anzac Day, so I can't report on anything!!
* Also it's great to see the great man Scoon back in the YV and doing well. Ask him to show you all the 91 2nd Div GF Monny vs Powelly at Warby - I think he wore it out watching it everyday for 10 years...

That's about it for now. Am planning on getting to a few more games - so I might have something a bit more useful in the coming months.

P.S - leave Silvan alone. I quite enjoyed watching the quality of footy they bring to the league - even if they wont have a beer with you afterwards.;);)

Yarra Valley Mountain Football League defeats the Bellarine Football League on VCFL inter-league weekend.

In perfect football conditions, the Bellarine Football League travelled to Woori Yallock and took on the YVMDFL’s best in both senior & under 18 football. In what can only be described as a thriller, the YVMDFL under 18’s fought back with pride & passion to defeat Bellarine 16 13 109 to 16 11 107. In a game where the YVMDFL struggled to get the ascendancy, Bellarine had the upper hand for the majority of the game. Bellarine looked winners with only 60 seconds to go, they had a 10 point lead and the YVMDFL had only 17 players on the field after one player was yellow carded mid way through the last quarter. Nevertheless, their fight back was typical of their commitment not only on the day, but all training sessions leading up to the game. In a best on ground performance, Pat Rosier dominated the mid field with some 30 possessions and stamped himself as a big time player. Dylan Troutman also figured prominently with a classy game. Reece Pepi & Jake Uslar also had great games with both booting 4 goals. Daniel Waters performed brilliantly in the ruck feeding the on-ballers with great precision.

Game summary: Under 18s

YVMDFL 3.1 7.5 12.8 16.13 109
Bellarine 6.3 9.6 12.9 16.11 107

Best Players: C. Ovens, P. West, D. Johnson, A. McDonald, T. Midolo, R. Kangars

The YVMDFL senior team had a day out with a comprehensive victory over the Bellarine Football League. Superbly led by Woori Yallock veteran & star Danny Ryan, the YVMDFL took complete control from the first bounce and was never headed. Wandin’s Paul Grayling was the leading light in a devastating display of quality centre half forward football. Paul took marks at will and not only kicked 3, but set up many goals for his team mates. Grayling was superb in a best on ground performance. Full forward Chris Murphy bagged 5 goals and if he had his kicking boot on, could have easily booted 12. Luke Barclay was solid at full back fending off most of Bellarine’s attacking moves. All in all, a very impressive display by the YVMDFL, who look to of established a core group of committed best players in the competition.

Game summary: Seniors

YVMDFL 5.6 11.13 15.15 18.21 129
Bellarine 3.1 5.2 8.7 9.8 62

Best Players: D. Gibbs, T. Clark, R. Wallace, L. Daffy, D. Zaparenkov, B. Carmichael

The YVMDFL interleague game was played on Saturday against a tough Diamond Valley opponent. The first half was all YVMDFL, with Kate Youlten on fire in the goals, assisted by Sharmi-Jane Philp and Sarah Hogan. Jade Hottes and Ella Priestley worked the mid court like true professionals, getting the ball to the shooters every time. The defenders weren’t letting the Diamond Valley girls have much of the ball, let alone shoot any goals.

Up by 8 at half time, the girls went into the second half with confidence. A few changes made to both teams, with Diamond Valley changing their goal shooter, the game became a little more face-paced. The defenders definitely had their work cut out for them, with Diamond Valley closing the gap to be down by only 2 at the last change.

The YVMDFL girls went back on the court with a few more changes, but just couldn’t keep up the intensity, Diamond Valley being the eventual winners by 2 goals 47-45. Both teams played the game in fantastic spirits! Best on court was awarded to YVMDFL’s Superstar defender Sam Coller.

Moin, did you also know...
Tezza from Upwey panned our visitors' rooms in Tiger Topics after the Anzac Day match, so they must be really bad if Upwey reckon their's are OK..

Moin disenchanted with the umps. Little Fat Bloke not happy also. Moin takes a year off. Little Fat Bloke takes a year off. Moin peers through LFB's curtains on dirty weekend away. Hmmmmmm. (You do need a hobby!)

Leave Silvan alone? Seems a lot of their players are trying to!!

PS. Good to have you back!

It puzzles me how people can get on here and make stories up about issues they clearly have no idea about. How about we all just talk footy and when someone actually has something that is fact, not gossip, then share it with the rest of us.

complete crap.

On a side note Moorcrofts new clubs team had their game called off at half time. An opposition player belted a 16yo boundary ump. Looking at a life ban best case scenario.

If the game didnt get called off due to the disgracefull act of the ROCKBANK player, Moorcroft would have kicked 15 easy!!!

Anyone from Silvan want to give the reason why Moorcroft and Green left mid season? Word is that Bullen has put in a clearance to, if so whats the reason if it can be mentioned.

Football Wrap May 30

1st Division

Healesville hosted Gembrook and it took the Bloods until the last quarter to finally shake off a spirited Gembrook who took it right up to their opponents. There was only 8 points separating the sides at 3 quarter time with Healesville holding the narrow lead. Healesville had just that little bit more polish to their game in the final term that their opponents couldn’t match. Healesville eventually winning 12.11.83 to 9.9.63. Healesville’s best: Peter Monk, Michael Anson and Cameron Biggs. Gembrook’s best: Ricky Clark, Shannon Richardson and Eric Pope.

In what was almost the upset of the round Monbulk traveled to Warburton and just came away with the win. Monbulk 15.21.111 defeated Warburton Millgrove 16.10.106. Warby held a 23 point lead at 3 quarter time and the upset was looming. Monbulk’s kicking in front of the big sticks was terrible up to 3 quarter time with a score of 10.18, they turned that around in the final quarter booting a more accurate 5.3. Unfortunately for Warby they could only manage 5 behinds and will know that this was 4 premiership points they gave away. Best Players for Monbulk: Luke McCormick, Chris Mitchell and Adam Gee. Warburton Millgrove’s best: Liam Barnard, Michael Walker and Terry Walker.

Upwey Tecoma thrashed Alexandra by a massive 187 points. 35.14.224 to 5.7.37. Alexandra had no answers for the dominance of their opponents. Upwey booted 10 goals in the 2nd quarter, another 9 in the 3rd and then finished off with another 10 in the last. Upwey’s Daniel Sheers was best a field (6 goals) with good support from Andrew Mcqualter, Michael Charles and Steven Brotja. Alexandra was served well by Thomas Duigan, Michael Bretherton and James Kidd.

Silvan took on Wandin at Wandin in what was a real danger game for the Cat’s. At ½ time Silvan only held an 11 point lead and Wandin was right in the game. Silvan came out after ½ time and played the sort of footy that we are used to seeing from the Cat’s, they booted 8 goals to 1 to take a 9 goal lead going into the last. Wandin came out in the last and threw everything at Silvan and played their best quarter of footy for the season. Wandin kicked 8 goals to 2 but time was their enemy as they went down by a narrow 14 points. Final Scores: Silvan 19.17.131 defeated Wandin 16.21.117. Silvan’s best: Owen Weatherley (4 goals), Daniel Norman, Marc Bullen and Brett Hartman (5 goals). Wandin’s best: Geoffrey Bartling, Jack Bourchier and Matt Bourchier.

Woori Yallock’s form has been impressive of late and it got even more so as they gave Mt. Evelyn a football lesson. Final Scores: Woori Yallock 25.18.168 defeated Mt Evelyn 12.8.80. A 17 goals to 3 first half set up the win for the Tigers. The 2nd half was a lot more even and Mt. Evelyn actually outscored Woori 9 goals to 7, unfortunately the damage had already been done. Woori’s best: Tim Williamson, Michael King, Patrick Sharp and Mitchell Bonuda (6 goals) Mt. Evelyn’s best: James Charge, Shane O’Brien, Steven Tesoriero and John Dalton (5 goals)

2nd Division

Olinda traveled to Emerald and came away with a hard fought 28 point win. Final Scores: Olinda Ferny Creek 15.26.116 defeated Emerald 13.10.88. Emerald held Olinda goalless in the 1st quarter and held a 15 point lead at the first break. Olinda slowly started to get their game together but just couldn’t convert their opportunities, at ½ time they had kicked a very inaccurate 5.18, Emerald on the other hand had kicked 7.6 to have the game all tied up at 1/2 time. Olinda did straiten up after the half kicking 10.8 to Emerald’s 6.4 to keep their unbeaten run intact. Olinda’s best: James Reid, Glenn Stevens and Patrick Rosier. Emerald’s best: Donald Alenson, Clinton Marsh and Michael Scoon.

Kinglake hosted Belgrave and won convincingly. Kinglake 24.6.150 defeated Belgrave 12.10.82. Kinglake increased their lead at every change in a very workmanlike effort. Belgrave played some good footy and did manage 3 goals in each quarter but Kinglake just had all the answers. Kinglake’s Brett Gallicho’s 7 goals was a highlight, Glenn Murphy was best a field Michael Quee and Cameron Scott closely followed. For Belgrave David Bilston, Damon Ferguson and Jacob Meyer (5 goals) were their sides best.

At long last Thornton Eildon has broken through for their first win of the season defeating Powelltown. Final Scores: Thornton Eildon 14.19.103 defeated Powelltown 8.17.65. Powelltown did lead this game at quarter time by just the 1 point but after that it was all Thornton. A 7 goal 2nd term by Thornton set up the win as Powelltown could only manage 3. After the half Thornton slowly increased their lead and finally won the game by an impressive 38 points. Thornton’s best: Shane Parker, Brandon Kapakoulakis and Chris Maher. Poweltown’s best: Luke Darwell, Sam Camilleri and Daniel Morton.

In the closest game of the round Yarra Junction was triumphant over Yarra Glen by a narrow 4 points. Final Scores: Yarra Junction 10.12.72 defeated Yarra Glen 10.8.68. This was anyone’s games deep into the final term. Yarra Glen held an 11 point lead at 3 quarter time but couldn’t hold off Yarra Junction as they kicked 3 goals to Yarra Glen’s one to win in a thriller. Yarra Junctions best: Darcy Kiernan, Brad Charman and Nathan Fall. Yarra Glen’s best: Ethan Shaw, David Watt and Peter Moate.

Seville traveled to Yea and won their 6th game in a row by 69 points. Final Scores Seville 17.7.109 defeated Yea 6.4.40. Yea couldn’t match the skills of their opponents as Seville accelerated away from Yea and increased their lead at every change. The 2nd quarter set the win up for Seville, even though Seville only kicked 4 goals they held Yea scoreless. A terrific effort from Seville and maybe they could be the team that could threaten the all conquering Olinda. Best Players for Seville: Shane Smith (6 goals), Brent Pereira and Paul Bailey. Yea’s best: James Clavarino, Chris Graham and Patrick McKenna.

Tragedy Strikes OFCFNC

The Olinda Ferny Creek Football Netball Club was rocked over the weekend with the news that Michael Wilson, current player and one of our most loved characters around our club, had passed away in the early hours of Saturday morning in a tragic house fire.

"Willo" was just 22 years of age and had played 25 Senior Games with the club and was one of our most loved because of his magic, smiling face and his fantastic and warm nature. Somewhat of an irony given his his nature on the football field was to be strong and hard at the ball and having a fierce desire to never lose a contest under any circumstances. He was an integral part of our club in all facets, football as well as our social side.

The cohesion of all our players on Saturday at Emerald was something I'll never forget. Many players, including team mates for that day arriving at the ground to be told the news for the first time. For all football teams to win under these circumstances was a true test of character against very good opposition and our players, committee and all supporters are to be commended for "ALL" efforts over the day.

President, Peter Hayne's ability to face the Channel 7 camera's, again under trying circumstances, was exceptional and is to be highly commended. Peter summed up perfectly what our feelings were towards Michael and the massive hole his passing will leave for us.

The challenge over the next few weeks and months is for all of us to rally around all family and friends and stick together. This is something this club is renowned for and is one of our strengths. I would expect nothing less from all our community !

Michael Wilson will be terribly missed, we offer our Deepest Sympathy to all of the Wilson family and to all those who called him a friend. The club will be setting up a trust account immediately with the new Olinda/Mt.Dandenong Bendigo Bank branch. We hope to raise funds to assist the Wilson family in anyway we can. (Please watch the website for further details)

RIP Willo, we love you mate !

WORAWA Aboriginal College has an impressive record when it comes to producing footballers at the elite level of the sport.

Past graduates include David Wirrpanda, premiership player and All Australian for the West Coast Eagles, Freddie Campbell (Sydney Swans) Richard Cole (Collingwood and Essendon), Sean Charles (Melbourne and Carlton) and Jarrod Atkinson (Essendon).

The launch last week of the Worawa AFL Sports Academy is a further step towards providing students with exceptional sporting opportunities.

Worawa board chairwoman Lois Peeler said the AFL and Worawa have a common interest in engaging Indigenous youth in education.

“The Worawa AFL Sports Academy will build upon the achievements to date and provide students with greater opportunity to maximise their sporting potential,” Ms Peeler said.

“The Worawa AFL Sports Academy will be developed based on the Worawa model of integrated education, culture, wellbeing and incorporating the Worawa values of relationship, respect, responsibility and rigour.”

Ms Peeler said Australian Rules football was the game of choice for many Aboriginal communities and added it had proven to be a successful career path for many young Aboriginal men in recent times.

She said it also worked as a vehicle for raising the profile of Aboriginal people and providing a positive stage for the discussion of many issues relating to Indigenous Australians.

The academy will have strong links with existing programs being implemented by the AFL throughout Victoria that focus on education, health, wellbeing and active participation and a strong focus on community engagement.

Ms Peeler said while football would form the foundation sport, other sports and recreational activities would be catered for.

“The academy will leverage the young people’s passion for sport to achieve educational outcomes and healthy lifestyles,” she said.

The launch commenced on the football ground and netball courts providing the many invited guests and other visitors with an insight into what it is all about.

The annual Reconciliation Week football match between Worawa and Melbourne Grammar School saw the home-team take the honours.

Shelford Girls’ Grammar was victorious in the netball competition, which was played between Worawa, PLC, Shelford and Rumbalara Netball Club.

Guests included representatives from community, government, education, sports and corporate sectors.

The league’s first Indigenous VFL/AFL umpire, and Worawa Ambassador, Glenn James was a special guest, along with Rich-mond CEO Stephen Wright and AFL players Matthew Richardson and Elroy Gilligan, as well as members from the Fitzroy Stars Aboriginal football club.

Students from partner schools including Healesville High School, Billanook College, Mt Lilydale Mercy College, Melbourne Grammar, Presbyterian Ladies’ College and Scotch College attended the launch with students later participating in sports clinics and enjoying entertainment by local band Ruckus.

I'm not from Silvan, but I heard that he got a new employer, previous employer decided that neither he or Mrs Morcroft would be able to committ to extra weekend work during winter in the Yarra Valley or surrounding Mountain regions so they parted company.

Re: Worawa FC
The previous Federal Government decided it was best to stop their funding so that the money could be put to more productive use bombing the crap out of Iraq and stemming the yellow/brown/black 'queue-jumpers' from invading our pristine shores.
The college was unable to sustain its role of educating indigenous youth, let alone run a footy club. Funny how wealthy private schools like Caulfield Grammar (where my kids went) get hand outs, but not our own disadvantaged! I would guess our xenophobic decision-makers did not want to encourage the socially divisive idea of preserving the world's oldest languages and culture!

(Cripes! Gimme back that soapbox!!!)

That doesn't make sense to me. I thought Webby employed Moorcroft!

worawa college?? what actually happened to the worawa football side? i know they competed for a little while and got belted a lot but it was before my time in the yvmdfl?

They played 2 maybe 3 seasons I think in the early 2000's. At the time it was alleged by many followers of the league that they were created only to go into 2nd divi & allow Woori who finished last in divi 1 to stay up cos Monky was coming back the folloing season to coach (Maybe this was true as a bunch of the players were sporting St Kilda & Collingwood shorts in the early games rather than YVMDFL ones). Who knows

Probably in hindsite should never have been let in as a senior club, had a number of kids play under 18's, reserves & seniors in 1 day. Definatly had some talented players, but just not enough, and all seemed to be running types & struggled for key position players.

They played at the College out near Healesville Sanctuary, but it was a battle. No bar (cos it was a school) and limited facilities (no seating or shelter for spectators) meant little income came into the club from external sources at home games (cos really only the players went), and as a result they peatered out into nothing.

They did have one of the most original jumpers I have ever seen, utalising the tradional Aboriginal colours, and were one of the 1st YVMDFL clubs to adopt the new synthetic style jumper. They also had a larger than life Derick Kickett barrelling torps out of the goal square after behinds for most of the day - gee he got onto a few :D

Yes, they finished 8th of 8 in 2001, 2002 and 2003. They may have won one match during that time - I seem to remember them beating Boronia Park, so that must have been in 2001. Their jumper was mostly yellow, with a red and black design. Yarra Junction kicked 51.23 (329) against Worowa 1.2 (8) at Yarra Junction in the opening round of 2003. I don't know if there has been a higher score or GWM in the YVMDFL. Worowa were scoreless that year against Seville 41.26 (272) in round 9 at Seville, and also against Powelltown 38.26 (254) at Worowa in round 17. In all, they conceded 11 scores of 200 points or more that season. Gembrook's Dean Hester kicked 33 goals against them in two matches (14 & 19), including 8 goals in the third quarter of the match at Gembrook on 19 July which Gembrook won 44.21 (285) to 6.5 (41).

Reds under the bed?? C'mon! Do they really believe that Worawa was only created to save Woori and pave the way for Monky??
Worawa FC actually came about from an initiative from the indigenous community, the YVMDFL and (I think) the SOYR. It was a great idea with some noble principles. The ban on having a bar was because they saw themselves as representing the aboriginal nation so drinking was not an image they wanted to promote. Rumbalara and Fitzroy Stars are other models in Victoria with the oldest being Koonibba FC (c. 1906?) in S.Aust.
It is a pity Worawa folded, because it had a lot to teach us about not only football, but also how to embrace differenes in culture.
Nonetheless, it was an important part of our history and should be put into context. Perhaps Joy Wandin Murphy, sister of the late Juby Wandin (Healesville legend and Wurundjeri king or 'nurungaeita') could help us out with the facts. I'd hate see something this important tainted by any silly ignorance.

wow... so it was a painful couple of years for them.. so a combination of lack of money, no players and poor performances killed them off??

Yeah they did notch up a win over Boronia Park, as i recall either Doug Hawkins or Dermie did the running duties and it was covered by before the game or what ever equivelant show was on back then.
