Review You blardy beauty. Western Bulldogs defeat Richmond (85-66)

I'm pretty torn on what to do with Redpath/Cordy I think I prefer Redpath but we need to pick one and give them a solid month in and see where they are at.

I think we could almost rest a couple key players next week against the Hawks, and throw Hrovat and Hunter in for a spell. I'm leaning towards giving T Boyd a run in the VFL, and obviously Cordy and we just play small against the reigning premiers. Could even trial Campbell at FF.

Can be really flexible and experimental next week as we aren't really expecting a win.

Well done folks.
Never looked like losing it - we completely went to water under the pressure.
Future looks bright.
Except for Bontompelli - he looks hopeless. Will probably only win 1 Brownlow.
Thanks for the good fun in our banter thread.
Always had a soft spot for the Doggies.
Hope you have a great year.

Richmond can win more games this year - all they need to do is Bo-lieve!

Richmond will be a good team this year, they aren't going to shake the top 4 but I could see them playing in September.

We dished up tackling pressure that Richmond haven't seen for a while and we wanted it more today, so we got the chocolates. But there were also some good passages of play from the tigers today that we weren't able to do much about.

Just finished watching the delayed telecast. Bloody good win Dogs. Swarmed, constricted and tackled all day! Then were pretty clean and fast heading goal bound. That was impressive. Richmond made horrible mistakes at times but never looked likely against the pressure. Had trouble just trying to deliver it into the forward 50.

It was like watching a young boaconstrictor learning how to use its serpentine body. The speed and intensity of the Bulldogs play reminded me a bit of the Bombers under Knights except the tackling pressure today was waaaaaay up.

This sounds like going back to a small forward line like last year. No thanks! Boyd did provide a good contest when the ball made it in long. Was well beaten, but we need to persist.

While i think you are correct about our structure, i worry about his development if we keep subjecting him to playing while underdone, he looks like he needs another preseason to me.

To be fair, we all know that because really he lost the best part of a year with an amateur GWS pre season. Long term project, but he already draws a defender or two & makes a contest. He could have had a couple of goals but we took advantage on both, but he needs to stop the defenders holding him so easily because at the moment like Rance & Grimes today they can get away with it.

I reckon he would play about 15 games max this year, for me that would be a good number. I'd play him next week against the best side in the comp because we need to know how that structure will be against teams like that. But then I'd give him a week off

I think its a fine line we walk, while to the team he is super important at the moment, we need to take a longer term view of him and make sure that we dont set up back by overplaying him while he is out of form. To me its all Fitness, if he was fully fit i think he would be playing a lot better.

I present to you - 29 pages of the Richmond preview thread!
Some stuff might be cherry picked and out of context but who cares really.
I'm also going to avoid quoting terms like "should win this" because that is just fans stating that if they want to make it to September these are the games that they should be winning which is fair enough. Not really a big call. Except when they put an outrageous margin on it then I will include it.

If we can't smash this mob by more than 40 on the G well we are shit

Richmond guns to fire and Jack and BG to have a field day against the midget Dogs defence.
Richmond by 40.
If we produce that style in the first quarter I can see a blowout type score line occurring against a vastly inexperienced doggies.
We should win this game by 10 goals

Hate to say it, but on exposed form I'd be backing the dogs.
Got our work cut out.

I reckon we'll smoke em.

I highly doubt after last years catastrophe against them we'll let it happen again! I'll back our boyz in, Tigers by 50

In response to the "got our work cut out"
I'm not sure West Coast in Melbourne are a big hurdle TBH.
we should, and will win comfortably, and surely you must think this...
I really want to see where this 60-point, 50-point optimism is coming from, because I just don't see it.
Bulldogs played alright last week, and we weren't that flashy last week (although I was pretty content with our performance excluding the 1st quarter and a bit).
I like where this is going... but...
Expect this to be a tight contest with Richmond pulling away to win by 20-30 points.
Even the guy who's being "cautious" expected a win larger than the bookie's line before the game
If we get our forward attack and defensive rebound working properly we should score extremely well, they're a developing side that doesn't have the defensive spread to cover our team.
That's the complete opposite of what happened. 5 likes. An in response...
I can see how Richmond could win big now.
At a minimum I'm expecting a result similar to our game against Carlton
If we play well take 2 goals off them and add 2 goals to us, turns a 27 point win into a 51 point win
We should smash them, or at least comfortably beat them. No excuses at all. We are even playing them at the MCG. Not to mention how well our 2s went against them in NAB1.
Just don't see how Bulldogs get us this time.

30-100 points depending on whether all or some of our players show up. If Astbury plays they will struggle to score, their midfield will struggle to move the ball quick enough, their defense will get smashed by Griff and Riewoldt.
Tigers by 40 plus
Richmond 40+.

Page 3
Close first quarter, then we'll break away in the 2nd and 3rd before we take the foot off the gas to allow them to close it back to around 30pts in the 4th.
Tiges by 58.
Tigers by 20+.
can't see them getting near us at the G.

Should play our vfl side. They went alright on Feb 26th

Like what the dogs are doing.
Finally somebody predicting a win, but a "close" win. Remember the bookie's line was just 3 goals

We should win by 5 goals if we're serious
Could be 100 points

They think we're delusional for tipping 30-60 point wins. Why ? Last time we played we were missing Maric, Rance, Lids, Miles and didn't have Hunt or Macca. Also Vlastoon went down and was subbed in the first quarter iirc... and we were actually fielding a younger side than the dogs and if it wasn't for Ellis's brain fart on Giansiracusa we would've still won lol. They also lost Griffen, Cooney, Wiggins.

Our vfl side nearly beat their best side a couple of weeks ago. West Coast are shit by the way, probably a bottom 4 side with the injuries now.

Richmond will win this comfortably even with Lids missing.
Yes, you are delusional. 12 likes.
Bonts is a gun, awesome to watch. Tigers should win by 20-30 though, Dogs have no decent tall targets and you can guarantee Cotchin and Martin wont have 2 quiet games in a row. Will have too much firepower for the Dogs.
To their credit, 3 likes, but still tipping a win greater than the bookie's line for the match. So far I've seen 1 tip for the Dogs, and 1 tip for a win less than the Bookies line in about a trillion predictions.

Can someone please explain where the Bulldogs get their confidence from??

I am actually confused…

Hard to say. ...I'm going with 17 points...
Make that 2 who have tipped a win but less than the Bookie's line. This is page 5 by the way.
On the very next post however,
If we are serious, we should beat them by 7 goals minimum

In response to the "where do they get their confidence from"
Well, they did seem to think their 1sts just beating our 2nds in the 1st non challenge game was meaningful, so they're clearly taking an 'especially optimistic'* view on things.

* - could also be referred to severely delusional
The Western Bulldogs are dead set a bottom 2 side.

I don't care if they beat West Coast, St. Kilda beat Fremantle last year by 70 odd points, but over the course of a 22 round season, they still only won 4 games in total.

Don't expect the Dogs to win too many more than 4 games themselves this year. Absolutely shithouse side.

Tigers by 35 points, and that's taking into account us playing shit for a half of footy like we normally do against shit opposition
6 likes. Oh, btw, this is the same bloke who was spitting the dummy in their post match thread, trying to find reasons for the lost. Said we had the worst list in the AFL, he would take Melbourne 2012 list over ours, and the only reason we won because Richmond were mentally soft and we were "inspired" by the new coach. To Richmond supporter's credit, they did put him in his place both in the preview thread("do you watch footy" in response to calling us a bottom 2 side) as well as the post-match thread.
I have to be honest.
If this were to be played at the cesspit I'd pick the dogs I reckon.
They are seriously underrated in here.
I dont think it's appreciated how fast and skillful they are.
This is a serious serious game this week.
The MCG is the only thing swaying it our way for me.
If we play the way we did against Carlton we seriously will not get within a bulls roar but i am confident that we will improve on that.
We need to.
The 4th person in the thread who predicted a margin less than the bookie's line.

This is brilliant
The dogs are kidding themselves, if they think they have any chance of winning this game*. Going to be a deadset bloodbath at the G, 100 point plus win for the tiges. They have no midfield or anything that resembles a team in general. Their so called guns in Macrae, Bontempelli, Stringer will all be exposed for what they really are in pretenders and straight up duds. Jack will kick 10 on that thing they call a backline. While that one million dollar list clogger won't even touch the pill or will give away a free kick with every possession. The Dogs are the biggest joke of football club that exists, trying to centre a team around a plodder is hilarious. If Chaplin was at their club, would be their best defender by the length of the Nullarbor. That Roughead bloke wouldn't even get a game at Broome Football club. If they seriously believe that they are even remotely good then their kidding themselves.
I don't need to comment on this in any way, the post says it all. 6 likes.
What is cool...is that with a big win....we can maintain our points for and against ratio (known as %age -.-) and stay in the top 4....maybe even move to top!! Which is a great feeling!! Would be nice to stay there for a good 4 rounds and keep confidence up nice and high. Will be cool for other teams to have to displace us rather than coming from behind!

That concludes the first 5 pages of the thread. I will post the following 24 pages in 5-page instalments over the coming week as a way of savouring the win.

Spent the day with paint brush in hand so didnt see any of the game, listened on radio and read this thread. Seems i owe Dickson an apology. I did not hear Cordy's name mentioned at all on the call, did he even get a stat? I was one who called for Redpath to be replaced but apparently Cordy had a very quiet game. From the radio call Talia seemed well beaten early on Griffiths but when moved to Jack did a great job. the radio callers had high praise for Jong, M boyd, Murph and Wallis. I haven't seen a wriye up on individual players but reading this thread it seems that is right.

No libba, no scoreborad contribution from the key forwards but still a good win - the future looks bright and how far can we go if it all comes together?

On a serious analysis point of view. HOW FREAKING GOOD IS IT TO HAVE A PROPER DEFENSIVE SET UP!!!!!!!!!!
  • Two genuine key defensive talls
  • Blokes zoning off each other
  • Experienced, cool heads in defence relative to the rest of the team (Boyd, Murphy, Morris, as well as Roughead who isn't really young-young any more and is our vice captain)
  • Our structure was so good that we forced them to over-use the ball trying to find angles to get it inside 50, kicking it sideways instead of getting it in there
  • We forced Richmond wide a lot
  • And when they finally did get it inside 50, there we are lot of 2-on-1's, 3-on-2's etc. And blokes like Roughead and Talia were getting intercept marks and loving it.
  • It's amazing how structure can make players seem so much better. I've always rated Talia (I told you so) and he's performing so much better.
  • Also, the players are better. Tom Young and Mark Austin played significant parts of the year as tall defenders.
  • This is more relevant to the first half because Richmond changed it up a bit at half time, but in the first half, they only had goals. 2 of them came off skill errors leading to turnovers from our half forward where they could run into an open forward line before we could "structure up" in defence. Whenever there was time to put in a genuine structure, even in defensively threatening positions like a stoppage in defensive 50 or when they had clean (but slow) uncontested possession 70 metres out, they couldn't score goals, and only 1 other goal in the entire half and I don't even remember how it happened.

A real interesting performance. One that has hallmarks of both the current coach and the Dogs of old. Really intense, scrappy around the contest, then a disposal out to a real classy mover who sets up the runners and the distributors... Some excellent forward targets (even if a few had an off day in front of the sticks) and a dour, hard working backline - that **** Kennedy, Kretiuk and Danny Southern would be proud of.

So much upside there.

A real breakout performance from Talia, Honeychurch, a great return to form from Dickson, JJ. Crameri will be better for the run, Jong continues to improve.

Continual harrassing and great work on forcing turnovers. Need to tidy up the skills a little, and the communication a touch (had 2 opportunities to have shots go begging as two players each left it for each other).

But geez it's nice to stick it up those Tiger flogs......

In both games we've looked better once the extra tall was subbed off. Need to decide quickly whether that's because both of them were poor, or whether our game style lends itself more to 'small ball' up forward than it does to two genuine key position players clogging space.
