Just finished part 1 of this week's pod. I'm sort of glad it's done, I've listened since the start with Grant Thomas etc. I did like the unfiltered nature of it but really listening out of habit for a while.

Really got oer him banging on about the same social issues etc. I didn't disagree with all of what he was saying about Welcome to Country but he went a bit far with trying to get people to boo etc, feel that's finished him off.

Yeah that made me stop listening and then I came back for the Ben Fordham episodes.

Also a shame his son wasn't on it longer as he was pretty good at pulling Sam into line, had good chemistry with Don and knew a thing or two about football.

Fitting that it ended with him spewing his opinions to Ivan and Michael Christian - two insipid groupies who will never challenge him at all. Every true valued friend he has had on the podcast has now left and he is the one common denominator. Odds on a bit of introspection? Million to one I’d say. He is going to die a bitter, sad, lonely old man unfortunately.

Going to miss Don banging on about Horses, the good ship Venus, nature, Bees, the Mornington shire, solvol, the state of the roads in Country Victoria, CEDAR meats, the bus from Haywood to Mt Gambier, be fit foods, The Hawthorn Football club, ruck work in the AFL, players smiling before a game, the pamphlet coming in the mail and asking who the doctor is.

And Sam said he never brought any topics!

Now that the podcast is (likely) finished what’s everyone’s top three moments over the journey.

I’ll go first

1. Don’s infamous ‘Sunny Boy Williams’ tongue tie that cracked Sam and the Rocket up.

2. When Don and Sam interviewed Rex in 2021. Rex wouldn’t shut up, Don couldn’t believe it and Sam had to calm him down.

3. Dons usual ‘Christmas gift that keeps on giving’ card game which he used to pull up once an episode. Sam asked Don to keep it PG. To which Don ripped out the the most crash one of the lot.

It was early days with Mike Sheahan, but when they were talking bout the top 5 players in the AFL, Don said he didn't know anyone, then went on to name like 10 players.

Also the short podcast where Sam read out a monologue about Amanda when she passed was incredibly raw and showed a side of Sammy I've never heard nor seen.

Top 5 interviews for me in no particular order,

  • Doug Hawkins
  • Kouta
  • Mick Gatto
  • Greg Williams
  • Sam Kekovich

The first 25 minutes of the Simon O'Donnell one was brilliant too.

Bill Brownless was one of the all-time interviews as well.

Cracked me up when Bill said he kicked 150 goals for Assumption when he was in year 12 and Don went on to ask him what position he played. Bill replied, "I played in the back pocket Don, nah you'd think full full forward'

Actually yeah, Bill's was one of the great ones. The bit when he is telling the story of him and Gazza snr sparring and Don straight away moves to the next topic.
"erhhh ya liked that story Don" 😂

All great moments! I forgot about Sunny Boy Williams until I read this and lolled again

i am fortunate enough to be on first name basis with grant. hes a great bloke. he maintains that sam needed to find content that the youngsters are interested in.

loved the pod back then with grant, mike and sam. great content, funny as. each playing their role.

didnt agree with everything he said, but loved to listen accordinlgly.

All very good.

Personally the grant mike and sam trio without guests was amazing. talked about anything and everything. ill never forget the time when they went down to the mornington peninsula for a sportsmans night. grant recalled a piece he gave to the gathered throng, of word for word, sam said that the crowd were in awe, one bloke went outside, vomited, came back in 5 mins later and grant was still going.

I’d agree with the Mick Gatto interview

The detail he got out of him re:the Murder charge was stuff you wouldn’t hear elsewhere

I'm not buying the line that the podcast is done. Not with an election year in 2024 (USA). If Don has had enough, Sam will find another ex-footballer or media type.

Anzac biscuits

The Doc didn't sound too happy that they called him up!

I won't believe it's done until it's done.

It's quite possible Sam could find someone else, but if it's Chicken Nixon then that's it for me lol.
