Does Stephenson's condition cause you to re-think your ratings?

Nope, I'd already heard similar before today. He's still the most talented player and nothing has affected him so far. Some teams may be put off, and it's entirely possible he goes later than many expected. But I wouldn't be bothered. Sounds like it's a different issue to someone like Alex Villis who had gone undiagnosed until the lead up to the draft and subsequently missed out.

Chris what is your opinion on the rumours of Stephenson dropping out of the top 10? I know you've been big on him all year, do you think it's the heart condition? Or are the rumours overstated?

Overstated. I don't think much has changed. Stephenson was never really considered a top 3 chance by the media. If North and Fremantle were to pass, then he could go in the 7-15 range. But that's nothing new.

For example...someone like Fogarty could go early, which means Cerra may slide. Saints go for him over Stephenson, and he probably makes it out of the top 10. That's just what happens when you're in the mix for top 10 selection, but not the top couple of picks. Same as Bonar, Clark, Naughton, Murphy. They could go anywhere from 5 to 20.

I also think the main media guys were embarrassed they didn't know about the heart condition. Clubs knew well before the websites started reporting it. I read Twomey say clubs were scrambling for medical reports, but they'd had weeks to investigate before he even knew.

I was always under the impression that St Kilda and the Dogs would jump at the chance to draft him if he was there, that's the part that's changed for me - knowing he might get past them.

I certainly would if I were the Saints or Bulldogs.

But it all comes down to who is left on the board. The Saints might get a sliding midfielder like Cerra and then feel comfortable to go with a half back like Coffield or reach for Bonar.

The Bulldogs might prefer the kicking skills of Murphy or Clark. Or perhaps Naughton if he's available.

I expect every club in the top 10 to think about Stephenson, but it's an even group. Even if I think Stephenson is the best player in the draft.

So maybe just a case of he's the 2nd or 3rd choice for a few teams in a row, rather than him really falling out of favour that much.

Yep, almost any player in the "Top 10" could be 6 Clubs 2nd Pick but get to Pick 11.

That's what I'd suspect. Be clubs liking other players more, not that they don't like Stephenson.

15 would be perfect Chris.:). I also noticed you have Zac Bailey rated highly in your power rankings (12), would love to get him at 18. You have Lachlan Fogarty rated very low (42) compared to everyone else, most pundits have us keen on him so I'm interested in your rationale for that low ranking.

Would you say Bailey plays a similar game to Paddy Dow but not as good a kick? From the limited vision I have seen that's how I see him.

I'm a big fan of Bailey. As I said in the BF Phantom Draft, his burst from stoppages is second to only Dow in this draft pool. He does play a similar game, just not quite as impactful. Hence the lower ranking. But I think he'll be a very good player.

There is talk of pairing up the two Western Jets kids, and I do think Lachlan Fogarty will be a good player. For me, I like my smaller players to have standout features to their game. I just think Fogarty is good at most things, but not particularly great at anything. I've just always wanted something more from him, but us amateurs always like the flashier kids.

In your opinion what are Charlie Spargo's standout features?

I think his general game sense. He reads the play very well, always around the ball and in the right spot. Tough for a little guy. I like his forward game too, more natural than someone like Lachlan Fogarty.

Does that observation give you reason to question any of your rankings?

I don't think so. I forced myself to be more thoughtful with them, and look deeper. If I ranked solely on style over substance, than someone like Noah Balta wouldn't be so low. Perhaps coming into the year, Stephenson at #1 could have been questioned. But not after the year that he's had, turning himself into a genuine midfielder.

Hi Chris, given your interest in the South Australian prospects, i look forward to reading your early thoughts on next years crop.

When do you reckon you'll post a "never too early 2018 rankings/musings" ?

Great work Chris really appricate the work and time you put in.
If the Baggers make off with the haul you suggest I'll be elated just over the moon. Keeping my fingers crossed
Rayner
Fogarty
Garner

Other than the knee injury whats stopping Lachlan Pascoe getting drafted? Would he be a good rookie pick?
