Good team, but I can't see Casboult missing round 1.
And I think it's slightly defender heavy/forward light.

I see our 6'5 inch mid(C) playing a bit forward. He is a beast forward too.

There's many possibilities, but ya gots ta narrow it to 22. Even the coaches differ on that, as expected.

The issue is, does Cripps go forward when Harry is pinch-hitting in the ruck?
Because then our centre square is quite diminished. And as good as Crippa is, and I agree, we should see him forward more often, we'd be playing parts of the game without a true key forward.

Of course, we all want Charlie back to complete our team.

But yeah, Harry pinch hits in the ruck. Rd1 Kruezer should be cherry to ruck all night virtually. He is very fit and workman like. It's only when he's carrying knocks that he struggles.

With Casboult, i thought he was alright as a defender last year and am ok with him there if we get a few injuries. But i don't want him anywhere near the forward line or ruck any more.

Whenever Crippa goes forward he plays as a genuine KPF. He has a beast attitude. McKay, Mitts, SOS/Kanga and an occasional Crippa sates me until Charlie returns.

I really like the team, but I'm having trouble with no Newnes - he was traded to play VFL

And like the rest of our top 26 or 28 players, he will play a bit/lot of AFL. There'll always be injuries and a couple low on form.

But ya gots to narrow your own best 22 down to.....22.
It's is darn hard - and that's a great problem to have
But, I'm on the fence with including Newnes or not; mainly because of the trade

Who the hell are Mitts and Kanga?

Based on last years form I just can’t see how we can leave Casboult out of the side. By the same token I can’t see structurally how he plays if all our talls are fit.

His versatility last year was exceptional, did a good job in the ruck (much rather him second rucking than Harry) competed well in the forward line but his work in defence when dropped behind the ball to stem the flow when things aren’t going are way is a real strong weapon to have up your sleeve.
Quite the conundrum

We don’t have an obvious best 14 and then shuffle some deck chairs anymore. We have 30 players who can easily fit into our best 22.Havent had that for 20 years.
I disagree that we don't have an obvious best 14. The big difference now is that those '15-30' players are fitter and of more quality so will improve our depth.

Definitely of the conclusion that we are going to have to see some footy played before being able to come up with a best 22.

IMO there are 28 players on the list who are all vying for a spot in the best 22 with the potential for there to be 33 which is finally where you need to be to be successful.

Backline is pretty strong. Midfield is ok, has potential and needs to prove itself. Forward line is ok but also needs to prove itself. Turning potential into results is going to be the big factor this season.

List looks good, we should be back to being a competitive team.

Backs: Plowman Jones Newman Docherty Weitering Simpson Williamson Marchbank SPS

Tough side to pick with the backs. I have Marchbank and SPS potentially missing from this group and they are talented players. Perhaps they fit in as utilities in other spots. We could play 8 defenders as some of these guys can play wing.

Midfields: Kreuzer Newnes Cripps Walsh Murphy Curnow Setterfield O'Brien

Midfield IMO is pretty set. O'Brien probably misses here as a utility like Gibbons or Fisher are more ahead.

Forwards: Martin McKay Cuningham Betts Curnow McGovern Kennedy

Forward line looks pretty set to me. Kennedy might miss out for a more utility type in Silvagni or Gibbons. Perhaps even Fisher if he comes on.

Utilities: Fisher Casboult Silvagni Gibbons

Utilities are handy and you need a couple. Other players may come into this category like Martin and Cuningham. These guys are hand to fill spots where lesser players could be picked and are great for structure. Casboult is probably going to be unlucky at times although he was so good last year. He will put pressure on our other tall forwards that's for sure.

Maybe: Dow DeKoning Stocker Lang Cottrell

I see these guys as talented players but still a bit raw and still having areas to work on to get into the side and probably only missing out due to who's ahead of them. They need to go to the next level to be in the mix of the above and I'm hoping they do.

Outsiders: Kemp Pittonett Macreadie Ramsay Polson Philp Honey O'Dwyer Phillips Goddard Owies

Always hope to have an outside jump out of nowhere and make the best 22. Couldn't say who it could be. Kemp has the talent and ability. Macreadie has the ability. Owies did some good things last season. Honey and Ramsay are potential surprise packets.

Backs - SPS, Jones, Plowman

Half Backs - Docherty, Weitering, Newman

Midfielders - Murphy, Setterfield, Walsh

Half Forwards - Martin, C Curnow, Gibbons

Forwards - Betts, McKay, Silvagni

Followers - Kruezer, Cripps, E Curnow

Interchange - Casboult, Simpson, Fisher, McGovern

That for me is close to your best 22 without injuries to start the season.
I'd gladly have Silvagni and Cripps interchange between midfield and forward.

Players I would gladly rotate out for better options early in the season are Fisher and Gibbons. If someone like Dow, OBrien, Stocker, Newnes.... are having a great preseason, I could see them move into the squad. Unsure about the Docherty, Newman, Simpson, SPS quad small defenders, so one or two of them could either miss from the team or be rotated up the ground.

Marchbank - He covers tall defenders missing.
Philp - Hoping short term he can play a pressure small forward role if the Betts concept loses some ability. (Probably asking too much from a first year player) Just think his speed offers a point of difference in our team structure.

Thats like saying you will choose the higher draft pick over a lower draft pick based on their number they were taken in the draft.
Not really.
I was thinking from Newnes perspective, he wouldn't agree to a trade to play vfl
Would he have played vfl if he stayed with the Saints?

missed Cuningham.

Best 22 all fit ...

Simpson. Jones. Plowman.
Docherty. Weitering. SPS.
Walsh. Ed Curnow. Setterfield.
Martin. Charlie Curnow. Cuningham.
Betts. McKay. McGovern.
R. Kreuzer. Cripps. Murphy.
I. Marchbank. Fisher. Gibbons. Casboult.

next few: JSOS. O’Brien. Williamson. Newman. Dow. Stocker. Newnes. Kennedy. TDK.

Round 1 22.

Simpson. Jones. Plowman.
Docherty. Weitering. SPS.
Walsh. Ed Curnow. Setterfield.
Martin. Casboult. Cuningham.
Betts. McKay. McGovern.
R. Kreuzer. Cripps. Murphy.
I. Marchbank. Fisher. Gibbons. Newnes.

if Williamson is fit and firing and Harry rucks well enough so Casboult is not required, then it gets interesting ...

edit to fix doubling up on Gibbons

Actually, no I did not miss him. I just don't think he is in the best 22 when all are up and running.
Let’s agree to disagree.

The balance is what I am interested in up forward. talls, and smalls with pace and goal sense. So for me the 3 best Talls when all are up and firing are Charlie, Harry and Gov, and the Smalls are Martin, Betts and Cuningham. Gibbons is not a natural forward, so it’s about whether we play another small forward or rotate midfielders through a forward pocket.

JSOS and Casboult I think get games while Charlie is injured and if we prefer Harry not to ruck. Kennedy may well be stiff.

Defence it looks to me that Weitering, Jones, Plowman and Docherty are set, which leaves 6 players being SPS, Newman, Marchbank, Williamson, Stocker and Simpson fighting for 2 spots (and possibly a bench spot).

Midfield, wing, center and 2 bench spots ... Cripps RR, Murphy R, Ed Center, Walsh and Setterfield wings ... bench there are quite a few ... Fisher, O’Brien, Dow, Newnes, (and any of defenders or forwards who otherwise miss so Gibbons, Cuningham, SPS, Stocker, etc.).

Abilty to play 2 positions and speed may well separate the last 2 spots on the bench from the rest.
