Outside the 22 but worth considering: Mitchell, Jones, Derickx, Towers

Good teaam bbut if Sydney has quick outside players with good foot skills they would be very hard to beat , Jack Kennedy McVeigh hannebry are all so similar

This is what I think our best 22 will look like by the end of the year.

Thats one awesome looking team. Should go 3 peat. Only thing stopping them is themselves.

After reading this thread I'm having second thoughts about Port's chances in 2015.
Some very good teams aren't there?

hmm thought id do it based soley on age experience and overall performance while maintaing good structure. i can think of only three players not in the 22 who you could make an argument would possibly be best 22 based on age, experience and performance.the following is a middling team if i have ever seen one. age and experience wise it should be top 4 but the quality is clearly lacking.
Seniors
fb/ morris 26/64 - astbury 24/37 - chaplin 29/185
hb/ houli 26/114 - rance 25/107 - vlastuin 20/38

Reserves
fb/ grimes 23/45 - ##### - dea 23/31. theres no f/b in development. grimes is a third tall type. could make a case to play instead of chaplin/ astbury.
hb/ mcintosh 21/0 - elton 21/1 - batchelor 23/52. elton, well is he a defender at all. we are trying him there.

c/ ##### - arnot 21/8 - gordon 25/14. the lack of genuine mids is scary. cant name a mid on the wing and gordon imo is more of a fwd than mid.

hf/ mcdonough 21/8 - ##### - lennon 19/7. theres no junior/developing chf. id argue theres not one in the senior team either.
ff/ lloyd 25/8 - ##### - mcbean 20/0. no genuine ff, some will argue mcbean. id call him a 200cm ruck/fwd.

r/ hampson 27/74 - thomas 28/100 - foley 29/154. hampsons a dud, thomas and foley are two of the three you could make a case as better performed players than a few named in the seniors.

we can fill the glaring holes up with nd 12 - nd 33- nd 52 - nd 70. 4 rookie picks.

- Brodie Smith is an interesting one. Been mentioned before that he needs to play more midfield, but as an AA half back it's a robbing the back line, to pay the midfield situation. If Grigg can step up in the midfield it makes the decision to keep Smith on HB easier.

- Henderson is a real utility type. Can play both ends but IMO is best suited as a defender and is a player that could benefit from a Smith move to the midfield.

Needs a big season: Mitchell Grigg - Depth in the midfield with Mrouch, Knight, Kerridge, E-Y, Laird and Lyons all in the SANFL means he needs to show form early. Hugely talented player.

Scott Thompson - Arguably in his final season. Will be phased out more during the season IMO.

Debutant to watch:
Sam Siggins/ Jake Lever (2014) - Never been a better time for Siggins or Lever to debut than early in season 2015. Adelaide are searching for a third tall defender and with Otten on the LTI list and Shaw's future uncertain Siggins/ Lever may be groomed for that role in the NAB Cup with Cheney also.

The biggest issue with Lever currently is he didn't play any footy in 2014 due to a knee reconstruction. His draft position and rating by other clubs means he knows how to play the tall defensive role well but

Riley Knight (2013) - Hopefully he will get some games in 2015 as the Crows look to phase out Scott Thompson. Matt Crouch also in the mix for Thompson's role but debuted in 2014.

FF:
Stefan Martin - Daniel Merrett - Josh Green

R:
Matthew Leuenberger - Tom Rockliff - Jack Redden

INT:
Allen Christensen - Mitch Robinson - Marco Paparone - Sam Mayes

Needs a big season: Mitch Robinson - Robbo will be in new surroundings and brings something different to the Lions midfield. Love his aggression but he needs to harness it more and use it the right ways. Skills aren't great either. Claye Beams will want his role as will Nick Robertson.

Marco Paparone - Has a lot to prove and has the talent to prove it. Whether he does or not is another thing. There are young talls and some older talls like Brent Staker lining up for his role in the team.

Matt Maguire, Daniel Merrett -
Loyal servants but both arguably nearing the end of there careers to. Maguire's role in assisting in the development of Darcy Gardiner is just as important on field as it is off it

Merrett was discussed as a trade option at the end of the year. Hugely important to a forward line without a real strong bodied presence without Brown.

Debutant to watch (2013): Jonathan Freeman - Academy player from 2013 draft who is the perfect size to make an impact as a KPF. Will be wanting to play a role in the senior side as a FF or CHF.

Personally I'd persisit with Close and consider Freeman from FF, while Merrett possibly goes to FB in expense of Matt Maguire

2014: Liam Dawson (ACADEMY) - Arrived at the BL as an academy selection and seems to match the bill of a prototype AFL midfielder. Will be tough work to get a gig in what will be a strong midfield with Dayne Beams, Christensen and Robinson added into it but from all report he will be a quality defender/ midfielder who uses the ball well inside and outside. The other BL Academy draftee was the tall Harris Andrews who was also rated highly pre draft and has the flexibility to play tall at either end.

Needs a big season: Mitch's, Robbo and Golby - Robbo will be in new surroundings and brings something different to the Lions midfield. Love his aggression but he needs to harness it more and use it the right ways. Skills aren't great either. Claye Beams will want his role as will Nick Robertson.

Golby sticks out as most eligible for the SUB role. Loses his attacking defender role to Dan Rich but I feel his foot skills could be just as dangerous as an outside midfielder. Again his position is open with Claye Beams, Nick Robertson, Rohan Bewick, Ryan Lester and a number of 2013 draftees looking to impress in the NEAFL.

Marco Paparone - Has a lot to prove and has the talent to prove it. Whether he does or not is another thing

Jed Adcock, Matt Maguire, Daniel Merrett - Loyal servants but both arguably nearing the end of there careers to. Adcock is definitely still best 22 capable as is Maguire whose role becomes important in working with Darcy Gardiner.

Merrett was discussed as a trade option at the end of the year. Hugely important to a forward line without a real strong bodied presence without Brown.

Debutant to watch (2013): Jonathan Freeman - Academy player from 2013 draft who is the perfect size to make an impact as a KPF. Will want that CHF role that Close has.

Sam Siggins -
There's a lack of depth in his role as a tall defender so early chances may come.
Riley Knight - Hopefully he will get some games in 2015 as the Crows look to phase out Scott Thompson. Matt Crouch also in the mix for Thompson's role but debuted in 2014.
Pretty decent team, nice work.
Probably would have had Bewick or C.Beams as the sub myself. I would also think that Freeman would be trying to get the FF position. But apart from that gw.

None of them are your top liners apart from Roughead and Lewis and Gunston

Lake 32
Mitchell 32
Gibson 30
Burgoyne 32
Hodge 30
Hale 30

I would rate Rioli (if only those tissue-paper hamstrings would keep), Breust, Birchall, Stratton and Smith as a top line group for us now. Langford, Hill, Shiels are getting there for sure.

INT:
Sam Docherty - Andrejs Everitt - Andrew Carrazzo - Blaine Boekhorst

- Kristin Jaksch has been brought in for a reason. Is already a big size and even though he was drafted to GWS a FWD has the capacity to swing to the backline. Navicluar bone injury will see him have a modified pre-season which is where Walker/ Everitt could play a role earlier in the year but Walker in the back line robs them of a threatening player inside 50 but.

Needs a big year: Andrew Carrazzo - Like Scott Thompson at Adelaide he sticks out like a sore thumb to me. Carlton have worked over recent trade periods to phase out Carrazzo as a mid/ small defender by bringing in Sam Docherty and Mark Whiley and have used Dylan Buckley as a smaller defender also.

Draftee to watch (from 2013) Patrick Cripps - Bull of a player he is the perfect size for a modern day midfielder. Injury interrupted his season 2014 but if he gets a free run in 2015 I'd say he will play regularly.

Blaine Boekhorst/ Dillon Rainbow (2014) - There first and second round draft picks and both players who will excite Carlton fans for years to come. I see Boekhorst playing a role early as a player with senior experience previously and off the back of a solid 2014 as a line carrying midfielder for Swan Districts in the WAFL.

Rainbow I see as as part of the future off HB/ outside midfielder with his quality ball use and reading of the play.

- This team, especially the interchange, is a changing of the guard at Collingwood. Lost 2014 listed players in Maxwell, Ball, Lumumba, Clarke, Beams, Hudson and Lynch. Include Jarryd Blair and Clinton Young who are missing the best 22 IMO, it would be over 1000 games of senior experience gone in one period.

- 4 players, 65 games experience between them and in Kennedy, Freeman and Broomhead all completed 2 seasons on an AFL list or less. Taylor Adams is coming into season 4 now and will bring some hardness into the midfield with Levi Greenwood.

- In the back half I see Frost as the one who could feel a bit uneasy in his position. Form permitting I see Frost as a better KPD option than Keeffe but Lachlan has a major point of difference in his superior size and for a 204 cm KPD he isn't uncoordinated in his play. Keeffe also has the ability to ruck part time and relieve Witts, allowing the Pies to play Jesse White as a tall forward and forward ruckman than midfield ruckman.

- Blair and Young. Blair was the hardest to omit but with young talent like Kennedy, Broomhead and Freeman coming through someone had to make way. Young will be handy insurance in the VFL and will keep pressure on Seedsman. Gave Freeman a chance to prove himself with his explosive speed from the contest and contested ball winning play. Still ruing the fact that he got so close to landing at West Coast at the 2013 draft. Would have been a great acquisition to our midfield. Pies have got a ripper player in him.

Needs a big season: Jarryd Blair and Alex Fasolo - Two smaller forward/ rotating midfield players. One has been squeezed out to accommodate youth and the other Fasolo won't be able to feel safe in his role with the younger players pushing up and Blair in the VFL.

Feels like Blair has been ripped off not being in the best 22 because his defensive pressure and tackling inside 50 is important for the Magpies in locking the ball inside 50.

Tyson Goldsack and Jesse White - Goldsack knocked back a reported big offer from Port to stay at Collingwood and his role in the back line without Maxwell's leadership and Lumumba off the HB line becomes important. Is the 3rd tall defender in terms of size but like Maxwell may need to be flexible in his role and play as a third man to contests assisting Brown and Frost/ Keeffe.

White was a big signing for the Pies in the 2013 off season but didn't give enough in 2014. His third tall forward role behind Cloke and Reid is perfect for him as it will make him at least get the 2nd best tall defender. Brodie Grundy will want his role in the team also as a third tall fwd/ ruckman

Draftee to watch (2013): Nathan Freeman - I'm an unashamed fan of Freeman's. Love the way he goes about it and as i said before I'd love to have a player of his explosive speed and contested ball winning ability at West Coast, a role that we have lacked in since Judd left. Given a free run with injury I see him as a best 22 regular and even if he isn't in great form he is a kid you want to persist with at selection.

I thought Chris Judd was good in the second half of the year.

I thought Chris Judd was good in the second half of the year.

Second half of the year he was yeh. That first half of the year was mostly a write off but, he had the injury re-occurrence against WB in Round 5 when he started as sub, came on and was injured again quickly which could be argued was mismanaged by the club or player

Different style of player to Carrazzo and will be given the opportunity to call time when he wants, unlike Carrazzo who may be squeezed out

Nice work but that back line is a turnover machine.

Our backline kicking skills are poor. The only defender that can kick is Langdon (and Keeffe if he plays over Frost). Both Langdon and Keefe can still have their fair share of shanks as well. Keeffe should play CHB ahead of Frost any day of the week IMO not because of his height but superior rebounding and intercept marking ability that allows Reid to play forward. Also one of Marley Williams, Tyson Goldsack or Alan Toovey has to go for a defender that can kick.

No one feels like Jarryd Blair is getting ripped off and most supporters will be happy he isn't in the team.
