Very hard to pick the last few spots of the best 22 for Melbourne. Not terrible options but no standouts either. In terms of a second 22 and depth I really like that we'll have a few good young talls developing at either end and some ball winning mids. The big issue for depth for Melbourne is in the run and class of the outside players and flankers, there's not a lot of depth there.
That's actually a pretty handy second 22.

Terlich is a dud, and Matt Jones is a good VFL level footballer, but other than that they all have up side. Particualy KPD are looking good.

Interesting both you & a colleague have Cooney in the 2nds side.

Gather you now see him as depth. How many games do you expect him to play? Gather it will be his last season.

This is what I'd have as best 22 right now:

B: Jon Marsh ~ Nathan Brown ~ Marley Williams
HB: Travis Varcoe ~ Ben Reid ~ Brayden Maynard

M: Steele Sidebottom ~ Taylor Adams ~ Jack Crisp
R: Brodie Grundy ~ Scott Pendlebury ~ Adam Treloar

HF: Alex Fasolo ~ Travis Cloke ~ Dane Swan
F: Jarrod Witts ~ Darcy Moore ~ Jamie Elliott

I/C: Jordan De Goey ~ Jeremy Howe ~ Tom Langdon ~ James Aish

So second 22 would be something like:

B: Mathew Scharenberg* ~ Jack Frost ~ Jackson Ramsay
HB: Ben Sinclair ~ Tyson Goldsack ~ Adam Oxley

M: Mathew Goodyear ~ Brent Maccaffer ~ Tom Phillips
R: Mason Cox ~ Levi Greenwood ~ Brayden Sier

HF: Ben Crocker ~ Jessie White ~ Tim Broomhead
F: Darrean Wyatt ~ Corey Gault ~ Jarryd Blair

I/C: Alan Toovey ~ Rupert Wills ~ Josh Smith ~ Tim Golds
Strong midfield when Greenwood can't make the team.

If turns out to be the case, perhaps a poor career move for him?

How many teams have named their vice captain in their 2nd side...

I suspect you will be right unless Wada change things up.

Although Kenny has talked about going taller if the talls are all in form with 4 interchange bench.

I didn't count on the development of Crisp and a couple of others when he got here, nor did I expect us to recruit Treloar the year after. I suspect he'll still get games but I don't think we need another poor kicking inside midfielder in the side.

I'm hoping no more than 10. Of the smalls, I would rather have Howlett, Langford, Edwards, Ashby, Francis and at a stretch Dempsey get games ahead of him in that reserves side.

Given the (hopefully) improved midfield and forward line (add Howlett, Cooney, Dempsey, Hams, Ambrose, Kommer, Bellchambers, Brown and Gwilt playing a lot more reserves next year) we can really push for a VFL flag.

^ Long Term Injury

Main squad looks solid with only the backline which will need tuning. Also a lot of inside depth and a new look forward line will create havoc not just for Bucks setting the team but hopefully the opposition as well.
I think off the reserves, I think Marsh would be one of the main men to step up incase of a backline fix with Frosty and Goldy next in line who are more than capable of playing seniors football. Witts will come in when required against stronger ruckman in the AFL and of the Midfield, asides from all the development going on i think Broomhead and Oxley would be first in line followed by recuits Phillips and Smith who will have to show thier true colours in the VFL before getting a gig. Sharenberg re-injuring his knee will have to be managed but in time should find himself in the 22.

Great looking 1st team defence on paper. My only criticism would be that it may be a bit slow? Maybe drop a tall and bring in pace like Bews???

Bews will play most of the year on the small forwards, also Guthrie apparently will be spending more time down back.

Thats what i would have thought. Bewsy makes a few mistakes but he seems to be improving and adds run and dash.

Bews doesn't have the tank. I know the family. Hence why Guthrie has been earmarked for more defensive minutes.

Hypothetically what would be the best 22 if the wada ban happens? Surely wouldn't be too many players unavailable.

You'd think Pies would look to trade him next year then. Can't have a 400k p/a seconds player, especially not for three years.
