N.Jetta O.McDonald *Joel Smith

J.Hunt J.Lever M. Hibberd

A. Brayshaw J.Viney N. Jones

M.Hannan J. Hogan J.Melksham

J.Garlett T.McDonald B.Fritsch

M.Gawn C.Oliver C. Petracca

Interchange

J.Lewis D.Tyson A. Neal Bullen C. Salem

Next best 10 players I can't squeeze in but will play senior footy

Maynard, Harmes, Vince, *Frost, Weideman, vandenBerg, Stretch, Bugg, Pedersen, Balic

Plus there's Kent, Wagner, and Kennedy-Harris, who have all played senior footy. The depth is long.

*Most Dees supporters will have Frost ahead of Smith. I really Like Smith and he's only 3cm shorter with a better leap and he's as fast or faster than the speedy Frost.

If we're playing Adelaide you'd play Frost because of Adelaide's 3 big forwards. If you're playing Richmond you're playing Smith. It's all about matchups.

No doubt this team will change numerous times before round one.

I'd do it like this;

FB: N.Jetta, O.McDonald, M.Hibberd

HB: J.Hunt, J.Lever, B.Vince

C: J.Lewis, N. Jones, C.Salem

HF: C.Petracca, J.Hogan, J.Melksham

FF: J.Garlett, T.McDonald, M.Hannan

R: M.Gawn, C.Oliver, J.Viney

I: C.Pedersen, D.Tyson, A.Neal-Bullen, A.Brayshaw

Stiff to miss; Harmes, Stretch, Weideman, Frost etc.

Melbourne have some serious depth now.

having seen lever first hand over the last few years, you are taking a big big risk having him play CHB in that line up. Haven't you got some other big bodied defender who can do a lock down job so lever can play in the only position he knows (and plays very well) and that is third tall / intercept defender

We have Frost, but the choice is whether you play 2 talls and 4 runners or 3 talls with Lever as the intercept and 3 runners.

I prefer 2 and 4.

But if the club thinks we're going to compromise Lever's best asset by only playing the 2 then 3 it will be.

We only have 2 different, but I can't imagine they'll play Hogan, Tom McDonald and Pedersen. Especially with a fit Gawn.

Richmond won a flag with one tall in their forward-line. Granted they would have probably played 2 if they had that option, but your team has one too many tall forwards. The game is now suiting hybrids, which is why Hannan and Fritsch will be given every opportunity. They're both great in the air and can run.

I think Bernie's days as a mainstay are probably over. But he'll be good depth and get games.

Clubs generally set up with 7 defenders. Melbourne's best defensive set up would be:

2x McDonald(s)/Frost
Lever
4x Jetta, Hunt, Hibberd, Vince, Wagner, Maynard

B: Bews Taylor Kolodjashnij
HB: Stewart Henderson Tuohy
C: Blicavs S.Selwood Duncan
HF: Menegola Hawkins Menzel
F: McCarthy Dangerfield Parfitt
R: Smith Ablett Selwood
I/C: Cockatoo Guthrie Zuthrie Thurlow
Out: McCarthy, Zuthrie, Thurlow
In: Crameri, Fogarty, Kelly

One is a defensive wingman and it will be assigned to Lewis.

Wagner isn't top 22. Vince may be. Maynard is an inside mid and won't be part of any defensive setup.

Crameri is an excellent addition to this side.

Gardiner Andrews Hodge
Mayes McStay Witherden

Christensen Beams Cameron

Taylor Walker Robinson
McLuggage Hipwood Lester

Foll: Martin, Zorko, Rich

Int: Allison, Cutler, Berry, Matho

Like Rich and Robertson out of backline, Thumbs Up from me.

Rich inside mid doing what Voss (BL), Selwood (Cats),Mitchell (Haw),Libby (WB), Cothchin (Rich) did for their teams in finals, hard inside mid!

Maybe, Christensen as sml def adds speed?

Andrews must be set free to utilise his intercept marking, high class intercept markers are so hard to find.
So on team sheet appears in BPocket as D White use to in the Premiership years.

So my attempt considering all fit,

FB..Christensen...Payne....Andrews

HB..Allison..........Cutler....Witherden

C....D Beams.......Zorko.....Cameron

HF.....Taylor......Hipwood..Mc Cluggage

FF...Mc Stay........Smith.........Rayner

F.....Martin...Rich....Matherson

IT...Mayes...Robinson....Keays...Cox/Paparone/Bastinac.

No Hodge, he coaches and doesn't impede game time of our youngsters (same as Haw).
Rucks resting in goal square use their agility strength or getting ball to ground for smalls.
Also pulls defender away from Hipwood. McStay plays deep (he is the leader to space),HF's Taylor , McCluggage play high around centre and beyond again giving Hipwood space. FP Rayner at Resting Rucks feet deep in goal square.

Bloody strong team.

But Fogarty wont start on the field ahead of Cockatoo!

I think Cockatoo will play further up the ground for outside run now that we don’t have Motlop. Fogarty may get games purely to play as a defensive pressure player. Was the best u18’s tackler and we were shocking and locking the ball inside 50.

Help me out...

Cooked Taylor at full back, where he's been hidden from there for years...

Treacle moving Hawkins at CHF...

Crameri not playing in the VFL...

You ok???

I'm ok thanks for asking.

Taylor isn't cooked for starters or can any old pleb keep Lance Franklin goalless in a final?
Hawkins plays his best football now when he gets up the ground, and unlike so many actually delivers the ball well inside 50.

Crameri is a wait and see granted.

Not every game but I think you need Hodge to play initially to set up Mayes, Witherden, Rich etc with the positioning and leadership required. Would be a waste to get him there and not use him on field where his teaching is most effective. Similarly I think you need to lock in Gardiner and McStay down back and get some taller lock down defenders. Maybe you can move McStay forward but you got to have a key defender with some experience to shut it down and similarly a back pocket to do the same.

Midfield is light on which - after the absolutely elite top 2 - is going to hold the team back a bit. I think Bailey will play early and there's plenty of options but not a lot of great ones. Got to wait for Bailey, Rayner, McCluggage, Berry, Keays etc to develop.

Forward line looks really good it's probably just finding that 2nd tall / ruck that will hold things back.

This is not the round 1 team, but the team I want to see the Swans with going into the finals

B: Nick Smith, Heath Grundy, Lewis Melican
HB: Jarrad McVeigh, Dane Rampe, Jake Lloyd
C: Dan Hannebery, Josh Kennedy, Zak Jones
HF: Nic Newman, Sam Reid, George Hewett
F: Will Hayward, Lance Franklin, Tom Papley
R: Kurt Tippett, Luke Parker, Isaac Heeney
INT: Callum Mills, Jordan Dawson, Oliver Florent, Aliir Aliir

Having Aliir in the side will mean Mills can go into the midfield, and I desperately want to see Dawson in the side a lot in 2018.

As for Tippett, in form he is close to an AA ruckman. It is just a question of if he can ever find form again. I also think a full preseason will do the world for Florent, who looks classy but was not quite AFL ready in 2017. 2018 might be a bit early as well, so if not Florent then put Rohan in instead.

I thought McVeigh was cooked after 2016. I was wrong, he played some really good footy last year. How long can he go on.

He's done. Played well in the winning streak but when Geelong completely chop you up despite not having any fit small forwards it's game over.

Bokonon is not a Swans supporter. Either way, how can you say one poor game means he is done? He was very good when he came back from injury, and is one of the most composed players in the league when he has the ball.

Maybe
He played well one horrible game at Spotless when they got out by a couple of goals and we couldn't pull it back. You tend to remember the games you attend though, I think.
