Zac Merrett tackle

There is no To Green thread so i'll say it here but - we have jumped the shark.

How can you get suspended for something that the bloke is ABSOLUTELY fine from.

This is ******* madness and i'm happy to say that the game has gone soft, soft as *.
The fact that there's just about as many people that whine that we punish the result and not the action (of which I'm one) and others that have this take suggests the balance is probably about right.

Which is a more inherently dangerous action to the head

-Himmelberg sprinting and launching himself at full force kneeing Sicily in the back of the head, kicking the winning goal from the mark

-Merrett dragging ol mate down

The AFL is DELUDED in thinking that it is protecting players from concussion. If it truly wanted to protect players, remove the 1) speccy 2) spoil 3) players running back with the flight and so forth.

Can’t tell me Sicilys brain didn’t get rattled. Might have had no concussion symptoms but it’s every hit.

Banning the hard tackle is ridiculous, 2 actions yes bad, spearing them rugby style and lifting them yes bad, but this? Rough but not suspendable.

AFL is a joke. They know the speccy is a big draw card so they ignore it, despite it being so dangerous. Marking contests have lead to spleen and kidney damage (Tom Lonergan), concussions from a full KO (Jordan Lewis + hundreds more), rib injuries etc.

ban the marking contest!

Fair enough... IF ITS A DANGEROUS ACTION. Tackling a campaigner well is not dangerous. This is dumb as ****.

Everything works that way. Like if you steal a pack of chips you get a smaller punishment than if you steal $10 million.

The result is directly tied in.

To be honest, the action of Green's is a lot more worrying than Merrett's

Agree to disagree, I don't think Merrett or Adams deserved suspensions for what it's worth - but I do think Tom Green did.

Also shits me that half the players in the comp duck and lead with the head, and then will want a compo payout down the line.

AFL should start recording and filing away in a database all the ducks (whether it was a free kick or not). When/if these players sue, show evidence that a lot of their head knocks were of their own accord.

We also need to start rewarding the guys who brace for contact and lead with their hips to a ground ball, FAR safer than the idiots who lead with the head to draw a free kick and then will likely whinge in the future they didn’t get protected. Self-protection must be promoted.

The issue is why wasnt it graded High like Day last week ?

The Tribunal found Day deserved the High grading so why isnt the MRO listing all the tackles as High?
That's not the issue at all.

Impossible for it to be medium impact given:

1. He didn't need an assessment, period.
2. The tackle wasn't forceful.
3. He immediately went on and played the game.
4. There are no reports of a delayed concussion.

For it to be medium impact it has to have at LEAST 3 of the above to change.
Any tackle can be medium impact.

Of course it is. The AFL went to the Tribunal saying dangerous tackles which dont cause injury should be graded High severity and the Tribunal agreed.

So why arent all these dangerous tackles being graded High by the MRO ?
Please go melt in the Day thread. This thread is for melting about Merrett. :)

No doubt you'd openly defy work place rules, who cares about being fired.

They use discretion all the time, why is this any different?
The AFL keep banging on about a players duty of care to another, why are the Umps exempt from this?

I honestly dont' get how there are so many soft campaigners on this planet. Biden really has ****ed the planet.

Don't know how or why you're making assumptions of me tbh. I'm merely just observing the incidents and stating what looks worse in the current AFL/MRP sphere regarding tackling

Could hit a record of number of suspensions this season. Does this end with players being scared to tackle someone down?

that is the natural result if this keeps up.

Look at Merrett's tackle than look at greens - both graded the same.

Merrett uses bodyweight to bring player down.

Green has double action and slings player to ground.

Merrett is getting charged based on the "vibe" not the actual action. greens is the tackle we want out of the game, the double action slinging player to ground.

This is similar to umpire disent last year, the pendulum has swung way too far. Common sense needs to bring it back.

Yep, exact same as Day/Rohan last week. You want to get rid of the Rohan action, not the Day one.

i can't quite remember Days but it should be simple, as long as there is no sling or double action than it needs to be play on.

we can't shit the bed every time someone gets a concussion in a contact sport. if the AFL are that worried about concussion and the resulting legal issues than just ban contact entirely.

What happens next time someone takes a big pack mark and puts a knee into the back on an opponent's head? Ban pack marks?

Merrett drove him to the ground.
Tackling a player from the upright position, and using your weight to then drive them down onto the ground is the problem here. Can't do it now.
If you choose to bring them down, then it comes down to force, angle, and head.

If the AFL are serious about brain trauma, these tackles have to stop.

looks far more to me that he just used his bodyweight. Does not look like any type of drive or forceful action too it.

If the AFL is serious about brain Trauma, they just need to ban contact at all.

Like i said above if a player is knocked out in a marking contest, do we ban marking?

Of course he used his bodyweight. He used his weight to drive him down.

Marking contests aren't avoidable, these types of tackles are.
