Of course he used his bodyweight. He used his weight to drive him down.

Marking contest aren't avoidable, these types of tackles are.

i dont agree he "drove him down", there was no forceful action.

the tribunal will sort it though.

all contact is avoidable FYI, if you are willing to draft a rule for it.

Looks like Merrett did all he could to both bring the player to ground (force a stoppage) and reduce the severity (rolled him in the tackle slightly). It seems like the bulk of the tackling force actually was cushioned on top of Merrett before his head hit the ground

After being extremely pessimistic of overturning the 1 match suspension I’m starting to feel more optimistic.

The other angle showing Sparrow landing shoulder first and partly on Merrett’s body. I don’t see how it isn’t exactly in line with the AFLs own example of what low impact is (the Caldwell video)

Which is probably why he only got 1 week.

How did Sparrow get to the ground then? Fell over?

Not all contact is necessary. They have to draft a rule for dangerous unnecessary actions.

he was tackled. Sparrows' own bodyweight contributes to him going down. Merrett did not dump, sling or complete a double action.

What is Merrett supposed to do in the situation? Just let go of him and allow him to play on? or gently place him on the ground whilst beeping like a forklift......

i mean come on...

Merrett drove him to the ground. It doesn't matter if it wasn't a sling or double action. He drove him from an upright position to the ground using his weight and force.

It's simple don't drive them to the ground in that manner.

Don't take them to ground at all then. It wasn't forceful. It was a perfect execution of a tackle.

The conspiracy theorist in me wants to think the AFL have handed out suspensions to Merrett and Adams to drum up excitement for Anzac Day. Would expect both to get off. One will have their suspension overturned tonight and another will have to go to the appeals board.

Off topic. Does anyone know when the AFL changed Tribunal appeals to just financial sanctions? Any links appreciated.

"the ban was upheld after a 30-minute deliberation by the Tribunal."

In other words, "Guys, we've made a grave mistake and have rubbed blokes out for pretty normal tackles and now we have no room to move to let the superstars play the biggest game of the season"

Merrett is not a superstar, nowhere near it.

Just ban the tackle fmd

Hope so Patrick Cripps did and had his ban over turned on his second appeal

There is only one Appeals board session per week at the AFL (when required)

This was the sitting of the Tribunal tonight, not the appeals board, and yes Essendon can have one more crack at getting Zerrett off there if those wish to (which they probably should really)

Epically if Adams is free to play his tackle is pretty much the same as Merrets
