Contract lengths 2024
Agree with Breed, although she's a bit on and off and still got bits to learn ... but she also got heaps of potential.
She might need continuity playing in the senior list to gain more confidence.

I am not sure on why Kemp did not feature that much in the last season, but she was pretty darn good in the season before that.

Look the midfield is starting to get quite a bit of competition now. Deed was largely squeezed out already by Bates etc last year and is lucky she has a contract to try and turn it around for the new coach.

This year with Sheriff and West, potentially Stone (in bursts), and McLaughlin and Williamson trying to get a spot on the wing, I can see Baskaran being really put to the test to see if there's a long term spot for her. My daughter's favourite player but the player of the 2023 middle six that has least established their spot. Can't cruise on her draft position now.

Maybe TLR starts being a burst player off the bench or HFF?

Don't see Smith in any danger given her appetite for the contest compared to some of her peers and positional versatility.

Bates into 1, West @ #2, McLaughlin @ #6, Sheriff @ #14, Stone in #22, Vukic in #23, Williamson in #27, Butterworth in #28

Surely we get a new coach announcement soon.

I doubt it - I expect they are going to say it’s Harford and I don’t think he qualifies.

Tam Smith will play in defence, which is where she played her best footy last year.

Sherriff walks in on the wing, West in the on ball rotation. Deed could still be something but needs opportunity. The midfield is a pack of very small players (laugh all you want at 200cm Liam posting that), so her extra size will help (those familiar with my work know my thoughts on big midfielders)

most mids will need to develop some positional versatility

Stone will play pretty much every week she's fit. Williamson will get a lot of games. Vukic, McLaughlin, and Butterworth I expect to (initially) be a bit more on the fringes. McLaughlin is Kaitlyn Ashmore 2.0 just smaller and turns 19 instead of 33 in November.

New Coach!
Webster wins everywhere he goes.

Superb signing, having coached Apsley to back-to-back QAFLM premierships and in 3 seasons as Brisbane's midfield coach had a prelim, grand final, and flag, whilst also having 4 All Australians and 2 League Best and Fairests (Bates and Anderson). The CV is phenomenal

We did a podcast about it and the other off season news (oddly backdated to 3 Feb)

That's some good news and huge wraps for Elliot. A really unique defender so I hope that means the sky is the limit for her

Elliott's ceiling is very high, just needs to settle into a more clearly defined role and Emily Everist returning to defence should help that. If she were 5-6cm taller, she wouldn't have got to the pick we took her at

Fan favourite Kaitlyn Ashmore and emerging defender Emily Everist have re-signed until the end of 2026 while Captain Tilly Lucas-Rodd, inaugural runner-up best and fairest Aileen Gilroy, 2024 Most Improved Player Aine McDonagh and talented ruck Lucy Wales have recommitted until the end of 2025.

Talented quartet Charlotte Baskaran, Louise Stephenson, Ainslie Kemp and Bridget Deed round out the re-signings.

Hawthorn has appointed Stephanie Binder as its Backline Coach for the 2024 AFLW season. Binder brings a wealth of experience in a variety of programs, having most recently served as a Development Coach with Collingwood’s AFLW team.

Prior to that, she led North Melbourne’s VFLW side as Senior Coach for two seasons after previously playing in the league for the Southern Saints.Binder has also played a key role in leading the next generation of AFLW stars, having served as an assistant coach with both the Vic Country and Dandenong Stingrays Under-19 sides.

Reckon Binder is a great get. Collingwood have WILDLY exceeded expectations in the VFLW this year

Mostly happy with the re-signings I would say, but suspect Deed is merely confirming the year she already had on her contract

Was actually a bit surprised to see kash re-sign.
I love her, and she was in great form last year, But she's admitted the body is pain, and she hadn't been training

Also suspect given the amount that have signed on that it means it's curtains for tam Smith at seasons end.
I actually love her as a small defender who can be swung into a defensive forward role and will hate to see her go

Hawthorn AFLW coach Daniel Webster

The length of Hipwell's contract is interesting to me. Compared to all the other HFC AFLW draftees from her group (Fleming, Eardley, Baskaran, Elliott, Everist, Wales) she's IMO probably shown the least on the field, yet only Flemo and Elliott have contracts of a similar length.

Perhaps Bridie is trading years on contract for staying in a lower payment tier?

Nevertheless, shows the confidence the coaching and list management groups have in her upside.

I've been a big supporter of Bridie. She's been played out of position as the key forward - At the bnf last yr she even drunkenly said it - maybe the new coach has ear marked her for a role higher up the ground and she likes it?

Yeah, works best as a high forward who runs and presents a marking option. Really good glimpses in her second season, positive it'll come together. Contract extension suggests club thinks so too.

Is Locke the only one not confirmed for 2024 now? May have missed that news.
