Trial by the Melbourne media
If the AFL give into this confected outrage and bleating then they are no longer in control of the game - the media wolves are.
This absolutely would not be (did not) happening if it was Cotchin or Selwood or one of their other darlings, indeed, every Victorian club player.
Their hatred for WCE knows no bounds.
They have not examined the evidence but just run with the narrative that they want to.

Before last week I felt very disengaged by the season, but rnd 1 has been dynamite. Team showed up with great effort, hints of a new gameplan and some fringe players stepping up. Then we get this MRO gem. It's only week 2 and it's already the VFL vs West Coast and West Coast has taken an early lead.

100% realistic attempt to mark by Rioli. Had Rowell not been there he’d have easily marked the ball

He is also 100% committed to leaping at the ball whilst making the attempt and taking into account the speed they were both approaching the ball at, Rioli had no hope to pull out. Instead he somehow managed to turn his body to protect himself and Rowell to some small extent

Lobb pulls out of a marking contest because the player has taken the mark before he arrives and he’s labelled soft.

Me again
I finally worked out how to get some images from that 5 seconds of video that no media is bothering to show
Copy of my post on Lions board
.....

My last comment on the Rioli incident
View images from bottom to top
My big issue is players going back with the flight of the ball
They put everyone in danger. A speckie is completely different to going back with the flight

Bottom image
Ball kicked from bottom right where WCE player on ground.
Rowell clearly going back with the flight as head looking up.
Rioli coming in quickly from the right
Middle image
Rioli leaves ground hands out in front to take a standard chest mark
Top Image
Rioli slightly changes direction. Only he can answer why

Was it to protect Rowell, protect himself or to hurt Rowell

This all unfolded in 1 or 2 seconds. Look at where players are in bottom image to top image

They won't appeal, they'll just change the rules in the off-season so he'd be suspended. But with an exemption if you actually take the mark. Leaving players with no idea what to do, again.
But Rowell didn't take the mark Willie effectively spoiled him .

Are you allowed to jump to spoil ?

2018 vibes already. Spirited performance round 1 in a loss that didn’t necessarily feel like a loss. Now the lynch mob is after us for what is a relatively non issue. All that on top of everyone having us bottom 4. This is where we thrive, us against the league with zero expectations

When Barrett is saying they have to and that's an official AFL podcast on the AFL website, it feels as though they will.

Just what Willie needs, more media circus around him.
I listened to that drivel this morning.
He made a big statement that since there's so many different views on the incident that the whole system needs an overhaul.

Umpire paid no free kick.
Suns didn't remonstrate.
Rowell didn't complain.
Tribunal found no charge.

Seems to me the only difference of opinion & flaw in the system is the MRO.
In that case, yes I agree & the MRO needs to go.

Gossage claiming the deadline to appeal has just passed, we should know soon. The scenes on here if the AFL appeal and Willie is given 2 or 3 weeks instead.

It was graded as careless, high contact and medium impact.

Even the biggest buffoons at fox footy would acknowledge that it was careless rather than intentional so it’s not going to be upgraded and that measure

And it’d be hard to upgrade the impact from medium to high given that Rowell attended the next CBD within a minute or two of the hit and played out the remainder of the game to lead his side to a win with a BOG performance

This should be pointed out to all the nuffies claiming that he should have got more than a week to begin with.

* I’m not sure but I think the AFL appeals tribunal isn’t necessarily bound by the MRO guidelines which could contradict what I’ve said above to a degree

A league source confirmed that Dillon can appeal a tribunal decision on the basis “an error of law has occurred” or “the decision of the tribunal is so unreasonable that no tribunal acting reasonably could have come to that decision having regard to the evidence before it”.

Grounds for an appeal are not strong, or nonexistent then.

I think AFL appeals try to stick within the MRO parameters and in Toby Greene's case the punishment was for an incident outside those parameters which they felt was inadequate.

We should have a new version of Brad Scott week?

From the article linked above

“What we instruct our players in a marking contest if you are coming towards the ball or the ball is coming towards you, you have right of way, and you can attack that ball as hard as you like ... the challenge is once you are in the air, and you are slightly second to the ball, what do you do from there? You do have a duty of care, but sometimes contact is inevitable.”
