I suspect this Melbourne side would have given any of the sides; great Geelong side of 07-11, hawthorn of 13-15, Brisbane and port of 01-04, a good shake.

So no chance we win. But you do get to see some of the game’s great players whoop us so…..

The frustrating thing is that the coaches clearly didn’t have back up plans. Ie what if x can’t play, how do we structure up then? They’ve had months/years to sort this out

Gray and bergman obvious ins

And skinner and McEntee obvious outs.

But we also need to consider giving pasini a run as this leaves us a bit small in defence.

And hayes too for Gawn and Jackson.

Tough to work it all out as we are scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Bit Harsh on mcentee, i thought he was okay for a 2nd gamer, could have kicked a couple and put some pressure on up forward.

hayes has to play, if he’s not picked they aren’t trying to win the game

if brown plays we have to play skinner, we have no choice. Unless clurey makes a miraculous recovery.

we Have to make this an ugly 10-12 goal game, get a good run from the umps and kick ****ing straight.

we have to win the midfield.

Skinner is too slow for the Dees' talls down back.
Play him as the tall goalsquare bound forward.
Let Marshall and MG roam as 2nd/3rd forward talls.
Bergmann and Gray in for Rozee and Motlop.
Frederick in and Sinn the medi sub.
Finlayson in for McKenzie who looks like he's playing injured ATM.

McEntee’s skills aren’t up to it. Credit to him for trying but he’s a SANFL player, nothing more.

I’ve got a strange feeling that we will win.
In a way it wouldn't surprise me, because it is exactly what we don't need long term. Beating Melbourne would mean the criticism from the media would stop for a few weeks, and we'd be back where we are now.

But realistically Melbourne area much, much better side than us, and will see the chance to kill us. We won't get within 10 goals.

McKenzie should be out but I think it would require a bit of courage by the coaching group that I am not sure exists.

On form through 3 games Jonas is our best KPD and he's been mediocre. He's also NOT an intercept player, more of a shut down defender, McKenzie similar.

Coaches will probably support continuity in the backline but for me I'd look at:

KPDs: Skinner, Finlayson, Jonas
Flankers: Bonner, Burton, DBJ, Frederick (Bench)

That's not exactly inspiring but at least with Finlayson he might do something, as opposed to McKenzie jogging around doing SFA.

McKenzie and Jonas are undersized key backs, that can play tall or small. Both are in the back end of their careers. Both are reliable defenders. But both rely on team defence. They need the spare player coming in for the spoil and the interceptor types sitting in the holes to prevent leads. They need up the ground defence. That’s the reality of modern defenders - they aren’t one on one types and need team defence.

Hawthorn tore through the midfield and had lots of shots straight in front or from within about 30metres. The crows likewise had plenty of shots within 30 metres on minimal angle. When both sides were pushed wide they converted too. The set shot kicking against us has been phenomenal, we are partly to blame but also that’s unlucky for us.

We are missing that interceptor in Alir and a reliable lock down defender in Clurey. It means Jonas and McKenzie are taking your number one and two key forwards rather than third as suits them better. They are leading that defence, trying to intercept, trying to be second man up and beat their opponents one on one. Skinner is inexperienced and very slow, really he is your break glass in emergency type. McKenzie is banged up as well.

McKenzie has to stay in but we need someone with speed and height that can structure up our defence. I don’t think Skinner has the speed or experience for this. Lycett can’t drop back in the hole. Really it’s Finlayson that has to do it.

Is it just me or do our players take an infinite amount of time to put on size.
I looked at Marshall on Friday and think I heard the commentators say he's been 6 years in the system, he still looks like a recently drafted teen, maybe he's got that Westhoff type body?

Our players definitely seem to take ages to put on size, but Visentini was only 88kg when he got drafted. If he can add another 5kg over the next year it'd put him up to 98kg and big enough to play ruck in the AFL.

Either way, I still stand by the fact that we've got to start playing a second ruck to help out Lycett.

Everything that is wrong with our defense, summed up in 5 words. They get put on talls, but they can't play tall. When our defense is under any real pressure they fail at it over and over. This is less on them as players, then primarily our list management for not getting 195cm+ KPD's on the list, until Aliir fell in our lap. Ken's not blameless here either of course, unless he's been repeatedly telling the list managers he needs 195cm+ KPD's and they've ignored his requests. Given his 'small, Smaller, SMALLEST!' setup over most of his time here I think we know it's more likely been 'Nah, we're good, what I need is more run off half back'.

The $64 dollar question this week against Melbourne is HOW MANY GOALESS QUARTERS WILL WE HAVE TO ENDURE??

We're overdue for one now since we didn't have a goalless quarter against the Crows.

Regardless of the changes I think this could be a thrashing and it will be evident after a quarter. In past years these are the games where we would get an unlikely win. This year our final quarters have been awful and it's a game where Melbourne will run away with if they get off to a good start. If Melbourne can kick straight this could end up in a 60+ point loss.

I remember back in 2011, before our matches vs the Hawks and Collingwood where we lost by a combined 300+ points or whatever, that there were some who thought we might pull out an upset. Shows the power of optimism I suppose, but I reckon this match margin could honestly reach 100+.

Depends on how much effort Melbourne put in. We have no defence, home crowd will be a negative factor as the fans are sick of the squad. And if our mids are losing clearances vs the Crows, I can't see them coming close to matching Melbourne's midfield. And especially with Melbourne's capacity to kick goals quickly, it could get very ugly.

What is this second ruck you speak of?

This season is tracking so similar to 2008 it isn't funny.

Round 1 honourable loss by 9 points to Geelong (widely regarded as a good effort considering what had happened the year before).
Flogged by Sydney in Round 2.
Lose showdown by 6 points in Round 3.

Does this mean we are due to be 47 points up late in the 3rd quarter against Melbourne on thursday and end up losing by 20.

i hope Melbourne really sink the boots in like a top team should, watching Ken squirm with his face mask on is an event in itself.
