Not suggesting there's too many necessarily 'banging the door down', but don't you think it'd be good to see some sort of statement made?

I could be wrong here, but I'm pretty sure Baldwin is the only player we've actually dropped this year (?). Unless you count Smith to sub, which I suppose you could argue.

It's a touch strange that Hobbs isn't even an emergency and I think Waterman should be in (which it looks like he will be). I'd be playing Baldwin too, though can understand that might make us too tall.

The players will become (some already are) complacent knowing they won't be dropped is my point.

What statement are you wanting them to make?

Hobbs needs genuine game time, might as well let him dominate the VFL midfield for a couple of weeks. I assume they didn't list him as emergency as they want him racking up another full game in the VFL and if he's not going to be debuting, why stuff around naming him?

Otherwise who are we dropping for poor performance?

Smith got dropped for a first gamer after being notably bad. Draper is already 'developing the youth' but has been average, could be dropped. Redman hasn't been great but would be dropped for whom?

The effort level against Brisbane and Melbourne was good, it was just the tale of genuine Top-4 sides being too good for a mid-table side playing a lot of youth.

Cutler has demonstrated form for being fumbly and using the ball badly in past seasons, could do a good imitation of 2022 Redman.
I dont see how past seasons are all that relevant considering his finish to last year and start to this.

Cutler would be in our half dozen most consistent performers in the first 3 games this year. That might say more about our team than Cutler but he certainly hasn't been as bad as you are insinuating.

Just that players will be dropped if they don't perform.

With Hobbs, fair enough - he looks ready to me based on last week, especially since we're desperate for that attack on the ball.

Ham for one should definitely not be playing. Some of his effort levels last week were embarrassing. Smith is another, who looks like he's going to come straight back in. Actually come out and omit them, say they haven't been playing good enough, they're going back to the 2's and will have to earn their way back in.

The effort level was okay the last two weeks, but I also think some of us are getting a bit over the top with the praise for 3 losses. If we lose against the Crows, do we just go back in again with the same team the week after?

I'd still drop Redman for Zerk. I'd be going with something like:

Laverde - Stewart - Kelly
Hind - Zerk-Thatcher - Ridley
Martin - Parish - Durham
Snelling - Stringer - Perkins
Phillips - Wright - Wanganeen
Draper - McGrath - Shiel
Caldwell - Heppell - Guelfi - Waterman
Ham

Guelfi/Ham can be interchangeable but I'd have Guelfi as part of the wing rotation with Martin and Durham. Redman, Smith and whoever replaces Cuts as the emergencies.

Lav on Gollant
Stewart on Walker
Zerk on Himmelberg
Hind on Rachele
Kelly on Rowe
Ridley/Heppell on the rotational midfielder

Butts on Wright
Doedee on Stringer
Frampton on our resting ruck
Brown on Perkins
Jones on Wanganeen
Smith/Hinge on Snelling/resting mid

cmon mate, was clearly making a joke about playing Redman's role.

I wonder if we bring in BZT for him and move Ridley to his role.

Edit: to clarify bring BZT in for Cutler

Not a bad idea. Allows Stewart, Laverde and BZT to take each of the Adelaide tall forwards and allow Ridley more freedom.

Ham did get dropped, he was a late in the other week and has held his spot because there's other, worse performing players (like Smith) to drop. Will likely hold it again this week because Cutler is out for a week, but may get dropped the week after that.

Smith was clearly omitted. Why does it look like he's going to come straight back in?

Because he's an emergency?

Who's getting over the top?

We were clearly outclassed by two sides who will likely play off in a GF, whilst having periods of the game when we managed to actually hold our own.

Melbourne just demolished Port (who finished Top-4 last year) whilst Port actively tried to flood and shut down the game, Brisbane destroyed North the week after we played them.

Losing to Adelaide, especially if it's in an insipid fashion, is a very different proposition than managing to actively be in the game at various times against Brisbane and Melbourne in consecutive weeks.

Taking a quick look we played 3 games last season with all three playing for 2 wins, 1 loss (to Melbourne by 11 points).

Don't see why they haven't tried it out a little more as it does appear to work OK for us.

For mine, he (Ham) shouldn't be playing ahead of Hobbs or Waterman.

We'll see what happens with Smith. Not sure you can say 'clearly omitted' if he doesn't play a game in the 2's. Obviously it depends what happens with team selection, but like Ham, he hasn't earned his way back.

Your Melbourne vs Port sentence is what I'm getting at. They beat Port by 32 and us by 29. They 'demolished' Port, but we 'held our own'? I know it's knit picking, but you can only have so many nice losses.

Hopefully we show up and knock off the Crows.

We were within 2 goals at time on in the last and tried to win it, opening ourselves to a bigger loss.

Port Adelaide were 8-ish goals down at 3QT and kicked a few goals in the last when the cue was in the rack.

Massive difference in the games.

Port shut the game down from the outset, playing an immense amount of players behind the ball to strangle the forward half of the ground for Melbourne.

They never really tried to win, they spent the whole game trying to limit the loss.

Meanwhile, we tried to win and conceded a few late goals in the process, and still lost by less.

Very different scenarios.

No, he was clearly omitted.

His body is cooked, playing him in the VFL doesn't prove or change anything. Sitting him on the bench as the Emergency so someone who could actually use the VFL game, gets to play the VFL game, is much more sensible.

For mine, he (Ham) shouldn't be playing ahead of Hobbs or Waterman.

Totally different positions and skillsets.
