Opinion Paddy Dow, can you see a pathway for him to break into our best 22 or are we resigned to losing him?

What are Dow's chances of breaking into the best 22?

If you were north would you give up Ben McKay for Dow and some steak knives?

If we don’t rate Dow, other clubs aren’t dumb enough to think he’s a gun.
No, but I’m not Norf. And, I know I said steak knives, some really, really nice ones?

Actually he is untouchable, he is contracted and the club can rightfully retain him

A year later when he is a RFA, we wouldn't have the cap space to trump Norfs offer

It won't happen

Again, that is simply naive thinking.

I don't know the stats, but I'd reckon far more trades get done whilst a player is in contract that when out of contract.

But it's all moot unless Ben shows a want to come.....

Not naive at all, it's called realism when dealing with the specifics of Ben McKay.

If Ben wants out this year, requesting Carlton, North will ask for a king's ransom, one we would struggle to satisfy given we can't trade this year's 1st rounder and next year, our 1st round pick isn't going to satisfy them

Next year as a RFA, they would be able to match any offer we make, then the only way it could happens, would be a trade again unlikely given the value of picks

It won't happen and it would be naive to think it will

Cos its a forum where people play out hypotheticals? Lighten up... a tiny bit? Said with love...

I agree with Jeremias.

Only a pick (3rd round or later) would be involved in any trade involving Dow, North are going poorly right now, why would they trade away their best and only key position defender anyway ?

That is simply not the way the game has worked out with countless players over the years.

If they let him get to RFA status, you reckon we'll be the only suitor?!!

I give up.

It's about Ben coming to us, not interested in whether he goes to another club who would have more cap space and pointy end picks

It's not just a hypothetical though is it? It's raised so often in here that I think people actually reckon it's a chance.

People see the name McKay and assume he wants to play with his brother. People see 'North Melbourne' and assume every player they have is up for grabs or wants out, when clearly not the case.

As for the last comment, do better. There's no need for that.

If we could get Ben McKay for Dow and “steak knives”, then why not just keep Dow since that trade would mean that Dow is one of the best players in his position?

Norf would want this years 1st and next years 1st in any trade for Ben this year. But its all a moot point, he’s not going to be traded.
stop it now

If Ben requests a trade, North will definitely force him to stay like Essendon with Daniher, Geelong with Kelly, Sydney with Papley etc.

He's just too important to them, he's basically the only key defender on their list. North supporters are already lamenting how few KPPs they have.

The skill to list management is getting players who will help our team but are attainable...look for players at teams who have a SURPLUS of key defenders so they will be more willing to trade. Teams with a deficit will fight tooth and nail to keep the player and demand overs.

Unfortunately this story says a lot -- in his position he is lined up behind some real guns and for mine it is a bridge to far -- am happy he signed for next year as means we either have some very good back up or we at least get something if a trade happens ..

Dropped out of the entire squad for this game after one appearance in the ones. There was some footage of Voss going off in the box and yelling for a message to be sent to a player at one point during the Collingwood game. I suspect it would've been Dow or Stocker. Not a great sign for him.

And to think THAT draft a guy by the name of Aaron Naughton was available. That’s what hurts.High pick.Massive bust.

Harry-Charlie-Naughton=Premiership.

That’s the difference.

Doubt that you could play all three in the same forward line. Would be very easy to rebound from. Was never in the discussions around that pick.

Closer to reality is that if we had used that pick on Cerra instead of Dow we would have had our first pick last year and could have taken Gibcus. Hindsight is a wonderful thing though. Our drafting by SOS snd Austin has been well above average overall.

To the pro Dow people on here, at what AFL clubs would he be getting a game at now?

West Coast? North?

Mind you pro and anti Dow isn’t really coming into it. I’d love him to succeed, but don’t think he’s good enough.

I think that he's good enough if you just look at his abilities alone.

It's more about his lack of defensive running and how it undoes his good work. Just had a gnawing feeling that some of those easy collingwood goals (sidebottom) were as a result of wingers having to move forward due to our mids running patterns breaking down. Not sure that was all down to Paddy but it's the first time that it has happened repeatedly all year.

I think you’re on the money.

It’s also a recurring theme for his whole career. Doesn’t have fitness or desire to do the defensive running.

I don't think Dow is terrible, he just needs consistent games and he needs to be one of the go to mids. He needs to be one of the main mids because he's not great in open play and not great at feeding off his team mates. His pressure acts have always been fairly ordinary but have improved.

To be honest he has improved a lot, in the past it would be a struggle for him to get 25 touches in the VFL at least now he regularly gets 30+ and kicks goals and has improved his pressure a bit.

I don't think he's going to get the opportunity at Carlton. But he's quality backup and could be desired by another club.

Good to see stocker out/ I am a blinded fan of his -- I believe
When he makes his way back he won't be out ever again .. for me he is not
Even at 80% of his capacity and he need to produce it
