Finn Maginness (35 disposals, 1 goal, 7 marks, 4 clearances)

"In his first VFL game of the year, Finn had 35 touches playing on the wing all day. He played at an AFL-standard, he was tough in the contest, clean around the ball in what was wet and slippery conditions. He really shone for us, he had a really great game."
That write-up says "He's in the ones next week" to me.

Played the role Howe usually does on the wing at VFL level. Had some good moments and some not so good moments.

Pros:
  • His running capacity was massive. No one could keep up with him.
  • Seemed to have a bit more speed around the contest. Not that explosive stuff that looks appealing but just his general pace was a touch quicker than most
  • Lots of second, third and fourth efforts
  • His goal was a ripper and I'm surprised not mentioned in the VFL report. Was being tackled by a couple blokes, forced his was way through it and managed to get boot to ball. Hopefully someone can find footage of it because he really had no right getting that goal the way he did.
Cons:
  • Ball use was pretty meh for the most part (but not blind turnovers like he had been doing at AFL level). Had a lot of moments where he would get 2-4 touches because his first couple would pass it on to someone under immediate pressure who had no choice but to give it back. Really flattered his disposal numbers IMO.

His gut running and general speed around the contest is a massive asset that cannot be understated. If we can find a way to really utilise that effectively, he will have a place in our side. Ball use will need addressing though.

Thanks for the summary.

Even if some of the touches were accumulated through ineffective disposals, nevertheless I am encouraged that he can accumulate big numbers and is developing as a player.

I am hopeful it won’t be too long before he puts it all together at the AFL level.

It was a step in the right direction for him. I was really happy with his efforts to get in and support his teammates. He really demanded the footy out there and wanted the ball in his hands.

That ball use you mentioned is evident in some of the highlights that just got posted

I was a bit surprised some of those pieces of play ended up in the highlights. A couple of them were what I was actually thinking about when referring to his ball use.
I did note in that footage, he got 3 disposals in 10 seconds and not a single one was effective.

Agree !
Getting 3 disposals in 10 seconds against rabble with no perceived pressure.
These players will make you pay persisting with them.
You don't go "find form" when you play rabble and are still making rookie mistakes when you have been years in the system.

WTF is this garbage Finn has not been years in the system. In fact he has had a largely interrupted football career so far through COVID. His initial problem was getting the ball at VFL now that he is getting it he hopefully uses more composure to dispose of it. The conditions were wet and slippery. His work rate was excellent. Its a good thing you weren't watching CJ when playing for box hill you would have cut him years ago

That was neither mine, nor On Topic's point.

This is garbage

Absolute no hoper with comments like this

Skills are good, but like Worps he needs to work on his decision making

Remember, he is just starting out in his career.
Decision making and composure comes with experience and exposure to game situations.

i was responding to someone's Worps stats from the weekend.
Keep your powder dry boys and girls.
Admittedly why it went that way in poor old Finns page is anyone's guess.
Honest mistake.

Please refrain from language like that.
Are you a grown up?
Your tone in your responses to people is rude and aggressive.
You dont talk like that to a stranger in the street so don't talk to people like that here .
it's called RESPECT.

How does one call one "a no hoper"
Do you know how stupid you sound ?
Maybe its your social norm with your boof head mates.
keep it in your house.
Just a tip grown ups don't talk like this to one another.

Thanks for your opinion
I will try to be better

But your opinion on Maginness stats inside Box Hill were just wrong and come from a place of not understanding midfield development
So keep it in your house

But alas i digress

Finn has the attributes to make it at AFL level, he just needs to produce more consistently and be given an chance to play as an inside mid when the time comes
