Footyology finals wrap up

Footyology podcast (Rohan Connolly and Rob Shaw) with wrap up on first week of finals. Swans v Melb approx 15 mins in. They actually talk about why the swans won it, and for some time too, not just why the demons lost it, which is a nice change for Vic based media.

Can’t fault the media this week. There has been some top discussions on the Swans and The Crunch podcast was more in depth analysis on how we play and how we won.

It’s getting me a bit giddy. Nothing is guaranteed but this ride is so much fun. I want this flag so bloody bad!

I hate King but he just gave a good insight into Friday night on SEN.
A Melbourne rat called earlier complaining that we got gifted ffs, some of their sooking on Friday night was amazing .
Kingy has been red hot on us for a while actually.

I've always seen Fox as Rampe's understudy.
I like the idea but I wish he'd turn into the heir to Nick Smith. Similar size, both rookie'd, having Fox evolve into absolute lockdown small defender to complement Clarke at the other end would be a huge win for the coaching staff.

Fox I see more as Rampe replacement. Wicks might need to add a new string to his bow as small forward might be covered by Sheldrick next year. Sheldrick will be eased into the side in the forwards like Gulden has and Campbell has in the backs.
Wicks is a great in your face defender. Has pace to keep up with small forwards. We still have Cunningham as a very good small defender too.

He's playing more in the Smith role than the Rampe role now (which he did do in the past). Also, he's 30 next year, I don't think he's needing or going to evolve into anything else than what he's doing (which is fine).

Rewatching the Fox smother(s) it's apparent that not only are Swans' players desperate but they're also quick. Within the few seconds that play took to evolve Rampe, Fox, Blakey and Gulden had run hard to get back and help out, quickly outnumbering the Demons. The players don't just all lunge desperately, they're so well drilled they take up defensive positions around the contest, so when they do win the ball back they can move it out easily

The surprise was MCDonald right there with them accepting the handball and clearing the 50

After calling us frauds post the Bombers game. :)

He does tend to chop and change due to whatever’s happening but I agree he’s been a pretty loud voice on our good run since that comment.

I don’t often get to see the footy beyond what I see on the TV so some of his broken down analysis is fascinating about what we’re doing upfield.

I used to Hate Kingy. I thought he was just negative. But I really now love his in-depth critiques of games and teams and players. You don't just get 5 minutes. He can talk for an hour and its all quality.

I always wait for the YT version so I can skip more of the filler segments on that show

All the Robbie Fox love is giving me the tingles

It is Robby fox love, but really it's the fact that the play was, quintessentially the most honest representation of the Bloods culture displayed in one crucial play that evening.

Being hard on the ball even when the odds are against you; exemplified firstly in Rampe chasing down Spargo when he received the kick from Brown , Rampe jumping straight up affecting the trajectory and angle of the kick, then desperately sprinting towards Melksham who in the corner of his eye could see Rampe bearing down on him and this is when the he ends up slipping.

Mr Fox did not not know Melksham would slip, but sprinting away from his man Pickett, to effect the ball carrier even when it looked forlorn in the beginning, that resilience to keep going is why he was able to make the crucial saves.

Although Fox was the one who committed to the selfless acts of defence, the play still would have come undone if not for the united and disciplinned response from the other swans, who positioned themselves to eventually win back the ball from a seemingly impossible situation and end up in an advantageous position through sheer weight of numbers.

Look at the vision, it starts off a 2 on 1 rampe vs sprago and melksham. The slip is but a split second, and already you have three swans players sprinting in, gulden lizard and fox on the screen, now it becomes a 2 on 4 play with swans having the upper hand. Fox gets the touch on the ball not once but twice, but lizard and gulden were also there, with lizard desperately lunging and sliding also as the spoil was made, and then McDonald must have ran pretty hard to be there for the link up play from rampes recovery to end up being a 5 on 2 situation.

On the ground that night, it was magnificent to watch. I was around a whole bunch of Melbourne supporters and when that play happened, I suddenly saw where the other swans supporters were around my section some flailing their scarves as they all stood up in unison to cheer on the swans in a respectful display of appreciation. Cheering not for a great goal, like Stepehens or Lloyd's were, but for a gritty defensive effort that was arguably the play of the evening. and it was great to see us all standing and cheering even in isolation. A magical moment. A play that in the end, really broke the hearts of the Melbourne supporters who were already quietly nervous throughout the game. A minute later, Heeney scores what would become the sealer and although there was still half the quarter to go, some melbourne supporters had already started getting up from their seats to begin the walk of shame out of the MCG. A deliciously outstanding moment to savour.

Swans talk starts 5:31mins in

13:15 in;
Barrett;
"I still expect that conversation about where he (Dusty Martin) plays football (next year) to still to be had before the close of play on trade period and I'm not ruling out Sydney and even specifically the Swans."

And it was in the context of Richmond potentially moving Dusty on because he wasn't fully committed and they could bring in two good young players with the money they saved.

Hey dem schmucks up in Sydney we gonna get one over dem.

Why would we want Martin? I mean he has not played his best football in over 2 years and he seems to be getting worse rather rapidly.

Great post.

We Swan fans do appreciate a good defensive effort.

Spot on Bumba. It takes an army. One player not doing their role properly there and we might've been talking about a Dees goal there rather than Fox's heroic effort. It was the same with the Rampe chase and smother on Mihocek a few weeks back. Monumental individual effort from Sir Dane obviously, but it was Stephens' gut running to help out on the last line of defence and Rowbottom's inch-perfect kick out to the wing to clear it that turned it from a great moment into a great passage of play.

There is just so much cohesion with this group right now and I feel like the incredible effort and work rate has become infectious. No one wants to be the weak link not offering enough so every one of them is just giving their all. Whatever happens from here in regards to the next few weeks, we have got so much to look forward to in the next few years.
