Well I think I'm over Rioli wanting to go to Port.
Their first win will be interesting, can't wait to see the Gatorade shower.

Karl Amon polled like that compo pick should be end of first round.

Get it done O’Brien!

If anything, if it's 1st round, Port is less likely to give it to us lol.
They'll probably try to downgrade it if they have to.

Rioli and 38 for 19 and 53 I’d do if they get a end of first round compo for Amon

Edit : It would actually be Rioli and 39 for 19 and 54 which draft point calculator coughs up as equivalent to pick 27.

I dunno if they would go for that, but 2, 19, 21 & 27 would be a very nice draft hand.
Hopefully Jackson will sign with Freo so we'll keep all those picks.
Otherwise it'll be 2, 20, 26, 37 & 39 (depending on other FA compos).
Perhaps an alternative if it doesn't work out is Port's 2nd round pick from 2023?

I have kept quiet on the Rioli issue but here is my thinking.

I was at first a bit shocked when the news broke that he was wanting out to Port.
Not so much because of the defection, but more so that while the Club, had in good faith, put contract negotiations on hold, out of respect to Juniors situation with his father having just passed.
The surprise was that while attending his Fathers funeral, Junior was actively negotiating with Port ..... and who knows who else ????

I also have no problem that Junior has chosen to leave, after all who can genuinely begrudge him from going for the better financial deal with a longer tenure.... oh and here is the clincher ...also with no behaviour clauses in his contract.... I get why that would be an attraction for him.

The manner in which he has conducted himself in the decision making process, is IMO less than desirable, but thats a whole other matter.

Junior is in many ways, a simpleton and emotionally very immature, as such, his lack of deep thinking prowess if not to be mocked, however it does beg the question, just what the hell were his management doing, or thinking, in this whole fiasco, clearly he has been let down by them, as they were not doing their job, being the interface between the media barrage and Junior.

So back to his departure and what that means to West Coast going forward.

No way to sugar coat it, the loss of a talent like Junior hurts in the short term, hard to ..... if not impossible, to replace such a talent easily.

However and here is the rub and I base my comments on the premature assumption, that we are compensated by Port in either of two ways:

1. We get the Amon compensation pick this draft.
2. Or we get Ports future second rounder.

Both options have been touted by neutrals as being balanced and fair.

I actually think that Junior has inadvertently helped the Club in the long term.

You see, I view Junior as a player that is not a leader at the Club, he is not a standard setter for training and game day prep or application.
If he had stayed he was always going to be high maintenance and drain the player management budget.
Let's be honest he is sponsored by " Off Field *ups R Us" .

If the Club was being as ruthless as it should be, with engineering our the rebuild as many want, it would be trading out some, but not all of the 26+ year old players, for good draft capital, while they hold value, that way accelerating the rebuild process.

Some posters have suggested trading Gaff, Darling, Gov and even Tommy B.

While Junior hasn't previously been mentioned as a trade out possibility, he actually fits the desired age profile to do so.

He isn't going to be a part of our next Premiership tilt, due to his age.
He is a distraction by way of his off field exploits.
He is not a standard setter on the training track.
He has current draft currency.
He doesn't want to be at the Club.

All of which say, it's now an ideal time to cash him in, on good draft capital, to hasten our rebuild.

He isn't the difference between us finishing eighth rather than seventeenth.

We are in for another few shit seasons loitering around the bottom of the ladder, however his defection may just help us, in some small way, too fast track our rise up the ladder, with the acquisition of a good draft pick.

So whilst it's sad to see him depart, simultaneously, it may be a blessing in disguise.

Agree with all of this.

What I am still having trouble with is there was very little to get excited about in 2022, and Rioli is a joy to watch regardless of the scoreboard. I love the way he goes about it, he's clean, tough at both the contest and the player, and rarely wastes a shot on goal. Given we're in the rebuild process (like it or not), having players like Rioli are so important for fan engagement. I'm a tragic so will watch regardless, and it may be that if we can get our players on the park there are others that can fill this void (Chesser, Ryan if he has a good preseason, Nic and Yeo come to mind), but the available list throughout 2022 was very, dare I say it, 'vanilla'.

“We think that we’re going to be able to get Junior fit enough to play at AFL level.

“There’s no doubt that he’s a really good player when he’s fit and going.”

You know our S&C department are struggling when even the GM of Football at an opposition club is taking thinly veiled potshots.

Funny if Rioli has a link with Hinkley and seems like Hinkley will be sacked next year if Port have a remotely poor season.

Hinkley will leave then what... Rioli is stranded

Rioli would know his 28 and times ticking on his career. Hinkley going wouldn't be a concern for him. His got the 4 year contract and that will see him through regardless of what happens to his retirement. For Rioli it was never about footy. It's about the money. Once that contract is signed in his mind his set. Footy comes 4th in the list of priorities.

1. Family
2. Money
3. Weed
4. Footy.

The fact they are anticipating a End of First or Very early 2nd Round bodes well for us.
We either take an additional first or that early second and a player.
Can't see us accepting anything less.

Port are just talking the talk though. What they say in an interview should have no impact on what compo pick they get. Given that the AFL have started to give less and less for free agency compo in recent years I still think that it's far more likely that they get pick 27.

It's interesting to see the media taking potshots at DeGoey because he wanted to know what constitutes a discretion in his contract. Yet Rioli dodges the question by saying it's just about the money and the media are with him all the way.

Agree with your post overall, but I feel like he’s copping it unfairly a bit on this point. He’s not bashing up taxi drivers, sexually abusing women at nightclubs or getting pissed and totalling his car.

He clearly thinks smoking weed is less of a big deal than it is, which is a problem, but tbh as long as he’s not tampering with tests or getting caught with it at airports, I doubt anyone in the country really gives a shit about it.

Other than the weed habit, he’s clearly a good natured person, and if he had some semblance of capability with the media, he would be an asset to a club from an off-field perspective. He’s constantly bigging-up fellow indigenous players on his social media and promoting highlights of indigenous kids playing NTFL etc.

I think he/his management have gone about this the wrong way, and very happy to trade him given everything, but would prefer to remember him fondly rather than some pariah.
