Strategy

Next year trade for both Caleb Serong and Noah Anderson.
Both out of contract end of 2023.
Make them long term offers they can’t refuse.
Bring back Serong to play with brother.
Bring back Anderson to play with father’s old club - (I know he followed Tigers as a kid).
Trade 2023 draft pick 1-8 + steak knives for Noah Anderson.
Trade out a combination of Grainger-Barass, Brockman and/or picks for Serong.
Both players are out of contract , Victorian Private School kids and can control destination.
Hawthorn will probably be bottom half and should be able to satisfy trades to Gold Coast and Fremantle.
Plenty of cap space from moving on big contracts of Gunston, Mitchell, O’Meara and McEvoy.
Sign a a decent free agent based on positional need.

Midfield 2024

Player Age, Height, Position
Noah Anderson 23, 192cm, Mid
Caleb Serong 23, 179cm, Mid
Cooper Stephens 23, 188cm, Mid
Elijah Tsatas 20 187 cm Mid
Jai Newcombe 23 186 cm Mid
Josh Ward 21 183 cm Mid
James Worpel 25 186 cm Mid
Dylan Moore 25 178 cm Mid/Forward
Sam Bulter 21 184 cm Mid/Forward
Connor MacDonald 21 185 cm Mid/Forward
Connor Nash 26 197 cm Mid/Utility

Suddenly that midfield looks like the right age profile, a lot stronger and a lot quicker from 2024 onwards.

With Tom Mitchell gone perhaps James Worpel can regain his 2020 form.
Add Jade Gresham under free agency as well

UPDATE TIME!

Okay I had a go at making the adjustments that I think we've done to this. Like always, I could easily have made a mistake so let me know if you spot one pls. I just have Meek and Stephens as contracted for next year although I wouldn't be surprised if we hear later that they have signed for longer during the trade process.

This just confirms how ridic young this list now is. 7 players over 24 and only 3 of those over 27. There's plenty of list spots so I wouldn't be surprised to see a mature body come in as a DFA or on the rookie list just in case we get desperate. If I have things correct, we have 7-9 senior list spots, 0-1 Cat A rookie spots and 0-1 Cat B rookie spots. We will acquire 3-9 players before R1 next year with several possible options but I think 6 or 7 is likely. There are many possible arrangements to how we can acquire those players but I imagine there will be a good mix of national draft selections, DFAs, rookie upgrades, rookie draft picks and perhaps SSP signings (I don't think I've heard of any Cat B rookie chances?). Re-signing one or both of Saunders and Seamus is also an option.

My best guess is upgrade Newcombe and Bramble to the senior list, add one DFA (Poulter?), Take 4 picks at the national draft (4, 24, and any other two that we can trade to using Dogs F2, 41, 48, 50 and 52), take 2 picks in the rookie draft and have a rookie spot open for the MSD.

We’re rushing through the seven stages of grief, should be fine by morning.

We’ve had our dog diagnosed with a fairly aggressive cancer today and given weeks to live (if we’re lucky) pretty much a year to the day we lost our older dog. Made it a lot easier to look at the long term/positives today and kind of giggle at the hand wringing. Granted we’ve all vented on forums before.

Just like last week when we missed out on Bowes and someone in my wife’s circle was going through hell with their boy who is the same age as ours and what they thought was epilepsy is quite possibly a brain tumour. It made the situation disappointing but hardly worth throwing toys out of the cot in an online sense.

Sometimes it’s good to get some perspective!

Blake Hardwick is our seventh oldest player?! Talk about a full reset.

Next year looking forward to seeing at centre bounces Meek/Duke/Ward/Cooper, Lewis at FF, Ramma at CHF and Reeves floating around with Bruest/Moore/Brocky at their feet look out! Add in another couple of top draft picks this year and next …….. I am stoked with what Mitch and the club are doing following a very deliberate plan and looking forward to watching the Hawks next chapter. It’s actually pretty amazing how quickly the playing list has changed since Mitch has come back home to the club.

Awesome, thanks for that Scrads!

So, we can have 42 listed players can't we? 36-38 Senior listed and 4-6 Rookie listed (Excluding Cat B rookies). We currently have 34, so need a further 6 - 8 more players.

We have 7 draft picks 6, 24, 41, 48, 50, 52, and 65 and of course we can then go into the Rookie draft. I'd love to get further up the draft order using the later picks. How many picks are we expecting we use in the Draft?

Do we target a delisted free agent or two? Is there anybody worth looking at, Stocker or Narkle for example. Not a lot of other options just scanning the AFL's delisted lists.

Footy is our escape from what real life throws at us.

Oh no doubt - but when life gives you a hip check it puts the trade histrionics into perspective a little which I think is as healthy as having footy as a release from the trials of life. Looking at the bigger picture of our rebuild helped me all this season and I am using it again to not get bogged down in 'winning' trade negotiations.

McCartney on SEN this morning. One thing - they should give him a bit of media training as he is not overly polished. Granted he's probably had a big couple of weeks so I will forgive him for being a bit frazzled at times.

More importantly - he said the club has identified 10-12 players that they believe will be a core contingent of our next flag tilt. Again - good to keep in mind that the club has a bigger picture in all of the wheelings and dealings. Does this mean the plan will work - of course not, but there is a means to an end with all of this.

I can hopefully see the strategy of Sammy and co to bring the youngest list as possible and get this young group to gel - with Tassie no doubt coming in the comp the next few years we will again have compromised drafts and having these kids all going well hitting their prime we may then be a destination club topping up like in our successful years and not relying on the draft as much.

well good in theory but that maybe the big picture, but i have to trust Sammy just like we did when Clarko came in and conducted his clean out of the playing group.

Comments from the football manager (forget the dude's name) said something along the lines that we saw some development this season that suggested we could make some moves with list management that we wouldn't have.

I'm guess they think the midfield has more promise than most of us here do.

Definite pieces of the midfield puzzle:
Newcombe - great season. Not sure what his ceiling is, but if that's his floor we've got a lot to look forward to.
Finn - great season. He played so many awesome shut down games. He's found a role that he can do as well as anyone in the league. Often overlooked.
Reeves - showed enough as a tap ruckman and occasional marking forward to convince me we've got one here.

Maybes:
Ward - loved everything he did but conservative on him until there's a break out season.
McDonald - as above
Worpel - if he gets back to his best then sure.
Day - if he can stay on the park we've got an absolute gun. Not sure if he'll play midfield.
Moore - has played some great games as a midfielder but I think he's more value as a small forward
Wingard - not part of the next premiership and I don't think Mitchell will play him in the midfield.
Nash - I don't think the best teams have a Nash type. He's improved. He plays a role. But I think he's more your 22nd player than a key midfield ingredient.
Stephens - new guy! If we can fix what Geelong couldn't and give him same game time then great. Unknown at this point.

I've left off the wingers (Amon, Morrison, Bramble, etc)

To me it looks pretty bleak right now. But Sam must see something in that list of maybes that I don't?

I think you're being fairly harsh slapping a "maybe" on Ward and McDonald who both just finished their first seasons :p

Good write up. I’d switch Finn and Ward though. Finn played some good shut down roles but not too many elite teams have a tagger in their permanent midfield mix. Outside of tagging I struggle to see where he fits in with us. Let’s hope he continues to develop and add some strings to his bow. I think every hawk fan wants to see him do well.

Sydney Stack delisted.

Would actually really like him and Narkle at the Hawks.

Stack has talent if he can stayed switched on off the ground

Narkle is average and has no tank.
