So his old man’s 211 SANFL games were exclusive of Escort/Foundation Cup games, or is there some other function at play, such as being born in Egypt?

Nothing sus!

I can't find the list of 200 gamers on the sanfl website any more.

If that said 211 games we would know it's an overcount.

They say he played “over 200 League games” on the Norwood Museum site, but curiously, don’t provide a definitive total.

The whole 200 game requirement - between certain dates (where the WA clubs only had 150) - was proven to be flawed anyway - how many actually qualified, compared to the generous VFL F/S concessions? (Don't even mention the 50 game mark for Johnno Brown)

Wiki has it as 211 games between 1974-1986.
4 times premiership player
1 state game for SA
So does Redlegs Museum

Nicknamed "Big Jim", or "Piano" because of his perfect set of white teeth, the 1975 flag was the first of his premierships, in his 211 game career at the Parade.

Yeah I remember him playing he would have to runaround in the shower to get wet he was that skinny.
Strangely looking up about him I came across an article from 2015 on Noel Pettingill who sadly passed away that year.
Always remember he was Lilly white looked nothing like a footballer but boy could he kick.
Still holds the longest recorded kick 85.39m at Football Park in 1974.
I reckon that was the one he kicked from the wing that scored at the lakes end.

In the old days ie 1974 when it was a 50 yard square/ 45m square Pettingill was on the back flank, more members side about 3m behind the centre square line and he launched a torp that went to his right and driffed to the outer wing and had one big bounce and went out of bounds about 8-10m around from the outer side point post.

I dont know how they measured it but from where he kicked it to where it went out of bounds was well over 100m. Given goal line to goal line at Footy Park was always 167m until the AFL ruled in the early 2000's there had to be 6m gap from fence to bouandary line, so become 165m long playing surface, and fence to fence was 177m, I wouldn't be surprised if the ball travelled 110m from where he kicked it to where it went out of bounds.

Jim Michallaney made his debut in 1974 I'm pretty sure whilst he was still at Rostrevor College so it took a few years for him to fill out, but was a good size when he won the 1982 and 1984 flags. He missed all of 1980 and only played 3 games 1981 according to Redlegs Museum page. He played 7 games in his debut year + 1980+1981 means he played 194 games in the other 10 seasons, when some of those years Norwood would have played between 27 and 30 games when the SANFL counted night series and pre season cup games.

I’m happy to have lived through those golden days of football.
Don’t know about you but todays game just doesn’t do it for me.
You would go to a Port v North game just to see Ebert play on Robran.
It’s a different game now all about Athletic ability and words like pressure acts and other statistical things I really don’t understand 😂
Much easier when all you had to do was kick more goals than the other team 😉

There was some great footy back then and there was a lot of rubbish as well.

I do miss that one on one footy, you don't see much of today, and the different types of spearheads kicking bags of goals week in week out.

I appreciate plenty of the footy you see today, but I don't like when it turns into a mini -league or Aus Kick game in perfect weather and everyone is playing on the ball.

I think a swap of 33 and 60 for kangas 40 and 43 would be good
By the phantom draft 33 goes out to 36 and there picks drop to 39 and 42
I think we’d still be able to get Phillips at that pick and have a better chance at getting van es aswell

Sounds good for us not sure Norf would go for it.
Well going by the phantom draft they use there pick 42 on Harvey who is f/s as there last pick of the draft so they upgrade 1 pick and I don’t think Harvey will get bid on by anyone so they could use 60 on him so they actually do better out of it
So I think it’s win win

Yeah I’ve still have heard no explanation about how he’s supposedly eligible.

I posed the question on the crows board a while back and they were adamant he was eligible but no one was willing to explain how.
I believe the AFL have extended some of the rules regarding SANFL players games so as not to discriminate against people who had children later in life like Jim Michalanney

Because of the buses I found it easier to go to Prospect Oval rather than Alberton and got to watch a couple of years of Robran with a knee brace and he was a great player just for not as long after he was injured.

I read that North might not use 43 now they have the crows 2nd rounder, i reckon its one you have in your back pocket on the night ready to go

Lots to lose by going early

Yes it would be discrimination if his son couldnt play for his dads club Norwood the crows

**** me the logic in that is interesting

I’ve done the calculations for Michalanney. According to the Redlegs Museum webpage, he made his senior debut during the 1974 season and played 4 games. Then he played 14 games in 1975. So we’re at 18 games. 1976 - In 1977 - 23 games. 1978 - 26 games.

So we’re at 67 games going into the 1979 season, assuming he played every one of them. But if you look at his Wikipedia page, you’ll see that the Football Budget is used as a reference of him playing 100 games….and they say he got to 98 games during the 1979 season.

Norwood only played 24 games that year, so even if he had played every single game (which he didn’t), he would have been on 91 games, not 98. Add the one game he played for SA, and that’s 92 games.

Then he missed the entirety of the 1980 and all but 3 games of the 1981 season. So he’s on 95 games going into 1982 - remember, this is assuming he never got injured.

25 games in 1982 (120)
25 games in 1983 (145)
26 games in 1984 (171)
24 games in 1985 (195)

In 1986 it is stated he played 11 games for the senior side and then retired - bringing his total to 206.

If you can find proof that he missed 7 games during his career other than his injury - like for a hamstring or whatever - then his son won’t be eligible for Adelaide.

All the numbers from that era are bunkum, as the SANFL and clubs used to count preseason and night premiership games alongside league games, which is why so many players from that era have gargantuan games tallies, and what made the AFL father-son so artificially high in the first place.
