Old enough to know that nobody has or ever has called it Gridiron in America.
I lived in the US in the 80s… and it was most certainly called gridiron. We in fact lived metres away from the stadium where the Super Bowl (XIX) was held in 1985.

Yes but you also say your son played "AFL" from 5-15 and not Aussie Rules....so there is that.

I was going to say the same thing

There is one thing for someone who doesn't follow the sport, and from the Northern states to say it, but for avid followers enough to post on bigfooty, it really is disappointing to read/hear

But a real Aussie would just say "Rules", with the "Aussie" implicit. ;)

Na, a real Aussie would just say, “I’m going to play footy” and leave it at that.

I’ve got footy training tonight.

Literally never in my 40 years on this earth heard anyone say “rules” referring to Australian Rules Football.

Pretty sure it was called "AFL Auskick".

"NAB AFL Auskick is the best way to introduce kids to the great game of Aussie Rules Football! It's all about fun, getting hands on the ball and constantly ..."

He’s taking the piss with the rules bit

It is Gridiron that’s literally the name for the football code and all it’s versions played on a gridiron

Canadian football
American Football
College Football
XFL (whatever their rules are this time round)

all have variants on the rules, Are all Gridiron. Played on a gridiron

Just like Test Match, T20, 50 overs etc are all forms of cricket

When you tell people here Australians call the sport gridiron, they usually laugh or if they're not really into NFL, they have no idea what you're talking about.

I have many American friends and former work colleagues who are massive football fans. One of them has a son who who a highly recruited Division one player in college

Every single one of them knows the game is Gridiron.

Just like we know the game isn’t called AFL.

British people know their game is called soccer, they know they invented the word, they choose to call it football.

This guy below is a former NFL General Manager, who learnt his trade under Bill’s Walsh, Parcells, Belichick, not to mention Al Davis.

Notice the title of the book he wrote about Walsh & Belichick. And yes I’ve read it, it’s fantastic

I remember when I was at school a study came out highlighting Australian school children's No 1 sporting idol was Michael Jordan.

Shock, horror at the time.

Not Kieran Perkins, Pat Rafter, Wayne Carey, Shane Warne, Greg Norman, Mal Meninga...???

Basketball taking over. The NBL will grow. A sport with world-wide reach. Will become No 1 in Australia, AFL dying. My family immediately bought shares in the Geelong Supercats and Canberra Cannons.

I think it's cute you're spending time scouring google desperately trying to discredit a person's life experience in the US. If you read my post, I commented that I've rarely if ever heard it called gridiron in over 20 years of living in the US. Unless you're omnipresent, how would you know that's not the case?

It was massive in the 80'S and was touted by many to be the number 1 sport in Australia going into the 90's and then it basically self destruct.

The National Basketball League (NBL), which began in 1979, is the top-level men's basketball competition in Australia. The sport experienced rapid growth in the 1980s with the influx of American players. National competition became popular in the major cities. By the late 1990s, basketball in Australia went into sharp decline.

The NBL has been through a couple of highs, and some pretty horrific troughs.

The 90's was peak NBL - where we had Rod Laver Arena being packed out for NBL matches involving the various Victorian teams. Then it hit a wall throughout the 00's (and the early 10's), where teams were relocating/merging/folding (or, in the case of the Sydney Kings, expelled from the league) every 5 minutes, no team in Brisbane or Sydney for years, and a disastrous broadcast deal with 10, where games were shown late at night. The only shining light throughout this time was Perth, who outgrew their stadium and moved into RAC Arena.

Then the current owners came in, and despite some obvious conflicts of interest with them also owning Melbourne United, have grown the league considerably, though Illawarra still seem to have to fight for survival every couple of years or so.

How did the name bunghole come about for Jason Dunstall?

Idk to be completely honest. But bunghole refers to the hole in your butt so it's possible at training he took a heavy knock to his coccyx back in the day and said ''my bunghole is bleeding, or it really hurts" and it has stuck ever since.

And if you think that Bleacher report account is a minor one, think again: not only is it followed by major NFL figures

It is one of only 136 accounts followed by Tom Brady - yes, that Tom Brady of greatest player in history fame.

This has to be the dumbest argument on here in a while.

Wonder if buddy Franklin knows he’s playing Aussie rules for a living?
