Cripps, Ed, Kennedy, Hewett needs to stop. Drop Ed and Hewett for dow and Carroll. Play Kennedy midfield/ forward.

Love Jack's efforts but he doesn't have long if his hurt factor for the opposition doesn't improve drastically. He can't mark as often as he should and when he wastes shots on goal like today, he's a nett negative. Out for TDK.

Fish and honey out for someone else. Not too fussed who, maybe Binns and Kemp.

Doc/ Boyd/ Saad instead of Carroll, Binns or Kemp if they're ready.

Above is what I'd like. Most likely change will be to the sub.

What I'd most like to see though is a little bit less predictability. Every ****ing kick in went to the same flank. St. Kilda had more players there ready for it then we did. Our game plan (can I call it that) honestly seems the same as when malthouse coached. Long down the boundary.

Love the debut of our new number 39 and as mentioned by another poster his twos form carried over into the senior and he very much earned the right play.

Changes:

I’m a bit torn on honey, he literally has no confidence, he was in great positions 2–3 times today to kick ball inside 50, but a more senior player was within 5 metres and he automatically gives it to them by hand regardless of whether they were in a better position or not, this needs to be coached out of him. A real shame he’s not taken his opportunity and on this basis he probably comes out. Ed Curnow must also have a spell, his tag just didn’t work and could not get himself into the game at any point.

Ins: Dow and Binns, simply we MUST reward their dominance in the VFL over a number of weeks now.

Fisher: very lucky that none of Owies or Martin are available.

Kennedy: is not a back, please don’t play him there, he’s best as a 65/35 split mid and forward. Perhaps if Kennedy and Cripps spend more time forward we could see Jack loose his spot.

Boyd: has not played a game all year and I love his run and skill, but he was blowing big time in the second half today and personally I’d give him another week in the twos and potentially bring him and Saad back together and give Moo a rest the following week. Looking ahead if we had Cincotta, Saad and Boyd in the back half all of a sudden our run, carry and ball movement looks a lot better.

Out: E Curnow, Fisher, Honey, JSOS, Kennedy/Hewett, O'Brien (Sub)
In: Boyd, Binns, Dow, TDK, Kemp

E Curnow - Struggling to keep up with the game, is a tagger only now...
Fisher - Go back and earn your spot. !!!FFS!!! you're a senior player, fix your kicking and decision making...
JSOS - We were getting on top, JSOS killed our momentum missing that shot from 20 out... Only getting a game on his name...
Kennedy/Hewett -
Kennedy - if he's not good enough for midfield rotations then have a spell...
Hewett - 29 possessions for 30m gained, thought it was a typo...

Honey & O'Brien - Hate to say it because they are Carlton listed players, but they are not AFL standard...

FB: Newman - Young - Weitering
HB: Cincotta - Kemp - Boyd

C: Acres - Cripps - Hollands
OB: Pittonett - Walsh - Cerra

HF: Binns - McGovern - Motlop
FF: McKay - Curnow - Durdin

Interchange: Dow, Cowan, De Koning, Kennedy/Hewett

* What is likely to happen, with our match committee *
Out: Cincotta
In: Plowman, LOB

If Hewett stays in then Kennedy goes to HF. He is a nice set shot kick and can take a mark.

If TDK comes in then he’s going forward or back. Stay out of the ruck except when relieving Pitto.

Fisher should be dropped but he’ll get another game in front his family back in WA.

The game against the Eagles should really be an opportunity to reward Binns and Kemp, and play Boyd.

Throw the magnets around and try something different - and I don’t mean persisting with Kennedy at half back.

Out: Ed, Hollands, Cow (rest), Honey

In: Dow, Binns, Boyd, Carroll

Newman Weiters Gov
Boyd Young Cin
Binns Cripps Acres
Carroll Charlie Fish
Mots Harry Durds

Pitt George Cez

Matt K Walsh Jsos Dow

Sub Hollands

Would have replaced more but no one else available/putting hand up.

I thought CHarlie was one of the best runners at the club? So get the * out of the square
and do some running, leave Harry there.

Here‘s an idea, rest Cripps forward. After 6 rounds last year he had 9 goals from 5 games, this year 0 from 6. Mots and Fish, get on the ******* scoreboard.

Here’s another idea, start playing with some balls.
He did. He often presented to the half back and then doubled back to the Center. They never tried to hit him. Just went boundary….boundary….boundary…..boundary.

Saad shouldn’t be risked
O’Brien isn’t up to it
Honey can’t get near it
Ed.C shouldn’t be played before youth
Silvagni testing the patience
Boyd possibly a bit risky so soon?
DeKoning conundrum

We will have no answer to Darling, Allen, Gaff, Ginbey and Shuey. I've said earlier that this is very dangerous as a smashing and I think we will play into thier hands with our dumb game style.

I actually don’t think JSOS is playing badly at all.

I think his goal kicking is a massive concern and as everyone has pointed out - is a massive momentum killer.

He kicked 2.3. However, if he kicked sat 4.1 that would be a significant return for a third tall.
Problem is he has never kicked 4 in his career and only kicked 3 twice in six years.

Anyway I would bring in Boyd as sub for LOB
Kemp in for Ed
Binns in for Honey

Play the extra defender instead of a mid in the backline. Cowan to be subbed off for Boyd at half time.

Hewett and Kennedy would want to make the midfield work or one will be gone very soon. Either Dow will get his chance or Doc will be a full time mid.

I said this in another thread, but the strategy for this game has to start with a simple premise: if we are a serious contender (which we have the talent to be) we should kick 20-odd goals against West Coast (as Geelong, Melbourne and Port have recently).

The way we played today, last week, all season... there isn't a chance in the world we kick 20 goals unless Curnow and McKay get 15 free kicks combined. Granted, that almost did happen against North, but over in Perth it isn't going to be the case.

We have kicked 100 points twice in 14 matches - both times against North. We've kicked 10 goals or less 8x in that span. Something is just broken about the way we are approaching the game and possession. We're trying to hard to 'defend' that we're forgetting that the best forward press is to win possession of the ball and slam it through the big sticks.

So rather than picking 'like for like' or trying to focus on the defensive structure or whatever, the conversation needs to be on where the 20 goals come from. Pencil in Charlie and Harry for a conservative 8 between them. No Docherty/Saad means unlikely to get anything from the backline. So that means we need something like:
  • the remaining forwards need to kick 6
  • the midfield needs to kick 6

Strangely enough, the issue probably ISNT our forwards. Silvagni/Motlop/Owies/Durdin/Fisher/Honey have combined for 26 goals in 6 games, for an average of just under 4.5 between them. Bear in mind we aren't exactly at our best, and stepping up to 6 combined is feasible.

Quite frankly, the problem is the midfield:
  • Cripps and Kennedy have not kicked a goal all season. Both should be close to a goal a game. Hewitt, Hollands and O'Brien haven't kicked a goal either. Neither has Pittonet playing in the ruck
  • Cerra, Walsh, Acres and Ed Curnow have each kicked one goal for the season. De Koning (playing ruck/forward) also kicked one goal before getting dropped

Basically, we are 6 rounds in and our midfield have combined for 5 goals FOR THE YEAR. Even against North, the midfield combined for precisely two behinds. Add in zero from Saad, McGovern and Newman (all runners off half back with big kicks... you'd expect to see them pop up occasinoally) and it is clear the lack of run into attack is the problem.

I'll write this every week until hopefully we see some change, but we need our midfield and defense to be running far more aggressively to attack, contributing more as secondary targets going inside 50, and playing more of a role in locking the ball in. Until we see that aggressive attack, we're going to battle. I honestly don't care how we get there - maybe we bring in Dow and rotate more heavily so the mids can press forward more, maybe it's just a setup and structure thing, maybe it is mindset. But we need to approach games thinking we are going to outscore the other team (duh) and that the whole team will contribute to that, not just the big blokes.

The more I think about the more I am open to a return of mcg to the forward line. Kemp back in the third tall role and boyd, Saad and doc bsck in.

Massive pace and kicking lift across the ground is badly needed.
McGovern to link up at HFF…Kemp or even Durdin to play. Allen, Darling & Waterman the talls. Not against Kemp as a marking option on the wing.
Mots might be a forced out to suspension
Also underperforming IMO, offers very little. Missing Owies positioning for easy goals.
If Hewett stays in then Kennedy goes to HF. He is a nice set shot kick and can take a mark.

TDK is not a defender. Struggling to be an effective ruck or forward. Skills are lacking as an bonafide AFL footballer, let alone a highly paid one.

Let’s bring some pressure and learn how to kick the pill. Better gameplan from here on in.

Hewett out for Boyd he might not be ready but we need all the kicking and speed we can get at the moment.

I would like to see Walsh play the high half forward role pushing up as the extra midfielder that fisher is failing at so badly, at the moment his opponents have no respect for him and just sag right off him, let’s see if the opposition would sag off Walsh I think he would dominate even more than he already does.

Kennedy and cerra as part of the midfield rotation only none of this half back rubbish and Ed out for the Perth trip for Carroll or Dow.

Also I would really like to see some more direction and leadership from Weitering yes he’s a good lockdown defender but with no docherty and an inexperienced backline it’s time he stood up to be the man down there, be aggressive, be demanding of his teammates he’s way to nice and easy to play against.

Interesting take on Walsh. Certainly Teague tried that. Walsh can’t help but ball track though.

Walsh in my eyes is our best player it would give the opposition a different look they would have to try and go with him I doubt any side would have someone who could, Ben Cousins dominated in this role for years at his best Cousins is the player Walsh most reminds me of with his gut running.

Almost every week now I see fishers opponents just sag off him to create an outnumber because he can’t hurt them a)with his poor running b) with his total lack of defensive ability or intent and c) his hurt factor with ball in hand.
