I’ve always admired your posts TRS, for you depth of knowledge, insights and persuasive opinions but I reckon you’re on the wrong side of this one.

Clearly a LOT of people GAF about this matter. So many that our team coach and captain, and club CEO (an old school “hard man” if ever there was one) felt the need to issue a joint statement condemning and apologising for the behaviour of a subset of fans yesterday.

I am personally tired of the perpetual Collingwood supporter stereotype - ignorant, uneducated, dentally-challenged and backward. Aren’t you?

Shouldn’t we all strive to break away from that perception and make Collingwood the best, inclusive, modern, aspirational footy club it can be, both on and off the field?

Our coach, captain and administration all seem to think so.

We sent a club statement and apologies last year when there were reports of iq and Ginnivan playing a game on tik tok were you discuss traits that you find more or less attractive. We're very responsive to negative press. I wouldn't take our response as a measure of the significance of the issue, except in terms of where it sits in today's news cycle.

Let me put it simply for the dimwits- if there is a chance an act/gesture could be construed by some parties as racist, then don’t do it.

Not hard. Not infringing your rights.

Succinct 👍.

Now up to Pies supporters to tell the booers to shut up. Feedback from peers the most effective.

I’m responding to this quote, calling this view naive.

“The club didn't apologise to Buddy because the booing was racist, they did so because they're classy enough to know it's a sh*t thing to do. :)
I didn't say the booing was racist. I said there was no obvious explanation for it. I actually don't believe it was racist but have no idea what motivated it.

Inspired writing. Surprised they let you as a Collingwood supporter to use a computer whilst you are in remand and even more surprised that you could conjure the eloquent yet sometimes verbose wording in this post. Well done

Thanks - even for the sarcasm.

The stereotypes are stupid, outdated and infuriating but we keep them alive by doing dumb things, like booing an indigenous champion of the sport.

After all the Winmar and Goodes history, I would have thought every supporter was smart enough to recognise that booing Franklin or any other indigenous player is a complete no-go zone. Regardless of the true reasons, such behaviour was always going to be pounced on by Collingwood haters and the media as racist and evidence that we’re still a bunch of backward hicks. We keep giving them the ammunition to shoot us down. It’s just dumb.

The thing that gets to me most about the booing supporters in this thread is that they justify their booing because other teams do it.....It reminds me of when I was a kid when i was scolded by my mother ....."he started it, mum!"

Anyone looking for a reason?

Sheep are highly social animals that continually require other sheep in the flock to be present. They are hardwired to follow each other even when the lead sheep is sending them to danger such as falling over a cliff. As a result the follow-the-leader instinct, shepherds have controlled sheep for centuries.

Nice to see someone not tow the company line, well said Lloyd

Nice to see Caro thinks because Buddy is indigineous, its a no go. So if it was someone like Heeney, it's okay? Also, Buddy apparantely whacked Murphy on the wing, and those fans on that side of the ground saw it and started booing. It was not for no reason.

Do you think Fly and Darcy want to spend any of their time having to be involved in putting out fires like this? Wouldn’t it be great if they had no cause to do so? It’s an unnecessary and time-consuming distraction. We are the kings of off-field own-goals.

Yes…apparently two wrongs somehow make a right.

How early in the game was that? Buddy was being booed loudly when he took a mark with 15:30 left on the clock in Q1.

Think early on in the 1st. Think on the MCC side of the ground. I saw some comments from those that sit in that section talk about it that were at the game

It's also not hard to just not boo. This shouldn't be something that people are so precious to hold on to.

Hutchy and Caro lecturing the public about where the line is and being so arrogant about their personal placement of the line. FMD That reminded me of cricket before sand paper gate when the ugly Aussies, who were hated pricks on the field, went around lecturing other teams about the line of what is appropriate and inappropriate.

And the second thing that gets me about this thread is how much the booing supporters blame the media when it manipulates the pie fans stupidity to promote its newspapers and media channels.

You can look at the apology by the club as sucking up to the wokes or a smart move to take the heat off the club. I'm cynical. I prefer to play the game because I dont give a stuff about any of the peripherals. I'm here to win premierships. Apologise to attila the hun as far as i'm concerned. Dont be stupid to take drugs in a toilet....to have photos taken of you in bali....or boo at the MCG....because the main game is winning a premiership....

Didn't need to waste their time on it McRae had already played it beautifully at two different press conferences. All they've done is fuel it even further through making some strange apology which was qualified as being because Buddy is a great.

What is the club's stance?

To me, it seems to be - they don't like booing, but it's ok if you pay the money to enter and the player isn't a great of the game.

The footy was only on the MCC wing once prior to Franklin’s first mark. He shaped to smoother Noble’s kick, but couldn’t get there and instead pulled to Noble ground as he kicked. I’d be surprised if that was enough, however without slow-mo only pulling Noble to ground would have been obvious.

Wasn't on camera, but off the ball, while the ball was in place elsewhere is what I gather. So probably would be tough to find on vision.

I always boo the opposition when they run on the ground. I boo umpires.
Always have.
Finals . Grand Finals.
Sorry ..Mea Culpa...
Should we react the way we do at the theatre. Just clap.
Didn't know booing all those opposition player was poor behaviour..
Strange days indeed.
Sorry Ryce Jones. Wayne Johnston
Dermott Brereton Carl Ditterich.
On and on.
Very PC.....

Nah, there just has to be a good reason. I‘d boo O Henry. Or umps FOR A SPECIFIC BAD PERFORMANC. or for a dirty act by a player.

Not for no reason though.

I wonder, before the media decided to make the narrative all about racism, did anyone actually think to maybe speak to Buddy about this? Maybe listen to the voice of the Indigenous man they’re supposedly looking out for in all this?

Oh well, glad to see this handled so brilliantly. I assume there’ll be no blow back, and the booing won’t intensify against the people who usually cop it, who might be struggling with it. Coz, you know, no better way to stamp out booing than by constantly telling people they can’t boo. Especially helps when it’s done in a real sanctimonious way, which throws around racism despite any evidence pointing towards ANY motivation at all.

Bloody hell. Booing, eh? Such strife from something that seems like it should be so meaningless. The reaction seems out of step with the though that people booing actually put into it.

It would not surprise me if Buddy demanded an apology from the club.

Without using inflammatory language, I think they were saying that they condemn racism and anything that could be misconstrued as racism.

And I think they were also subtly saying “FFS Pies Army, please stop putting us in these sorts of positions, because we don’t want to have to continue to apologise for and defend things that we have long ago tried to distance ourselves from.”
