Precisely , he should be on absolute basement level pay. Don't get me wrong , he's been very good for us, but he wouldn't have been employed much longer if we didn't bail him out

Being an AFL ruck is a shit job imo and Hickey has earnt his pay well and truly with us

Why would you try and **** him over he'll just say no

Franklin was apparently on $1.5mn in 2021 in a back ended deal. Which was around 11% of the salary cap. So the cap must have been tight as Beatson has alluded to, when you throw in other players. Make what you want if it.

No doubt the revisionists with hindsight would have managed the cap differently.
Yeah, given I knew about Buddy's contract for years beforehand, I wouldn't have signed up a bunch of questionable talent overlapping 2021, to lessen the salary crunch around retaining those we already had (and were more important). E.g. Lewy Taylor, Gray, Clarke.

I'm thinking TDK to Geelong and Ben McKay to Swans.

Kind of hopeful we get both though .. But that seems highly unlikely seeing we he havent got anyone in 10 years.

But id be happy with just McKay. It's between us and Port...

Saying we should have lowballed someone who turned out to be very, very good for us and has since battled through injuries is weirdly mean spirited.

He may be the best we can get. He's not going to lead either line, but csn be a valuable 2nd or 3rd KPD. Similarly if we need him up forward.
Role players in the NBA win Championships. AFL footy is no different. Not every player has to be a superstar to have a major impact on a team’s ability to get the ultimate result. Every piece added together does. He could fit that bill.

If we got him, I'd like to see us just settle him into key defence. Swingman stuff is a bit overrated imo.

More than a bit. It is the most overrated position in the AFL. I mean Buddy would have likely been great if we played him in defence sometimes, but you know why we didn't do that, it was because he was too good in the forward line. Players who are actually really good don't become swingmen.

Not convinced about Barrass. Too old for our group.

He'd also want big coin given the Eagles culture and pay structure.

He'll be 28 in October. Seems perfect to me for a group who are aiming to contend strongly for finals in 2024 onwards. Seriously good player who has, I'd suggest, 3-4 years of top football left at least.

Yes, and 28 and a half by the time he plays a single game for the Swans.

Do we really want to pay a first rounder, a good first rounder too, on a player who we may only have at his best for 2 or 3 years?

My understanding is that the club offered Aliir 3 years on $X and he requested an undertaking that he would not be played in the ruck, which the club declined to make.
He was not happy and sought permission to talk to other clubs, which the club gave.
Apparently Port offered 4 years at $Y and made the undertaking. Swans declined to match or better and said "go with our blessing".
All above board.
None of us know what, if any, limitations existed on what we could offer Aliir. Lots of posters have offered opinions on how the club viewed him as a player but no-one could deny he has provided good value to Port. Whether that would have happened if he had stayed is unknowable.

It’s a nice story except we traded him with 2 years left in his contract
