Voss deserves credit as Carlton’s stingy defence secures side seventh-straight win

“What I want to focus on with Carlton is their stingy defence. They've just won their seventh game in a row. They look like they're up and about, their stoppage clearance game is going, they're starting to score more heavily, and they found a way around a very well-coached St Kilda on the weekend.

They were the seventh-best defence in terms of points scored against after Round 10. Since Round 10, they are number one by about nine goals. The next best side is GWS in terms of points scored against.Collingwood are still up there because they've been very good defensively. But Carlton have been so good defensively and they've done it in two ways. The first way has been their elite pressure on the ball, they are the best pressure team. No one puts more heat on the opposition when they have the ball in their hands in the last 10 weeks and that has allowed intercept defenders like (Jacob) Weitering, (Mitch) McGovern when he's in the side, (Nic) Newman and (Adam) Saad be able to run off and to get more involved in their offence, but it's come about because of their elite pressure at the ball.

“Then when they've gone forward, they've slightly changed their forward set up and their smalls have got to work. It's a credit to (Michael) Voss, this is second time around for him … there's no coach that's been under more fire at any stage throughout the year than Vossy and he was able to withstand that. He kept his team, his staff and his players focused on what he felt was his philosophy around how he was going to build his best team.”

That’s how Kreuzer played - he wasn’t a great tap ruckman but he willed himself through every contest
That one play on half back flank. When he kept moving it forward and kicked it off the ground.

In the game day thread I posted exactly that.

Reminded me exactly the way Krueze used to play. Just tractor the ball forward and keep the play moving in our direction

More of this for rhe next decade please TDK.

When he gets the confidence to consistently take overhead marks he is going to be a massive weapon

Love this - so true, his approach definitely changed.

I wonder who helped him change his thinking?
who else

Nice little snippet here. Mention the important high half forward roles Cotts, Cunners and Fog are playing. They basically have only been in the team since around round 13, coinciding with our winning streak.

has always been the #1 issue at Carlton - for years, according to me anyway..this post goes back to Teague days...repeated often enough since then....because it always hurt my eyes watching the team get done on the rebound because of no forwad (or flank) pressure - but yeah lets blame it all on the slow midfield - because Kennedy ....

external people have realised this for a long time - and opposition coaches have feasted on this lack in Carlton's DNA for a long time

....Voss has (finally) got a mix of players in place who are happy to tackle in the forward fifty and everwhere else - he understood what Carlton needed to do to be able to match it with any other team..and has gone about finding a way and the players to do it.

I liek his selection integrity - " no tackle no win ball?" - NO PLAY

Funnily enough, it was front-half pressure that got Teague the job in the first place. We controlled field position and manufactured multiple repeat stoppages during Teague's caretaker period. Completely went missing from out game about a year into his tenure, and we never recaptured it.

Yep, this was our missing piece and our list managers were copping heat for it and Motlop and Durdin were copping flak for their efforts. Unfortunately 2 pieces of the puzzle who are in their prime (age wise) have been sitting in rehab too long, Martin and Cunners (< 50 games). What a difference they have made, both classy with good skills, don't need a lot of the ball to score or set up goals. They have taken the pressure off match ups of Motlop and Cotts and allowed them to free themselves up a bit more.
Fog has been good and intense with his pressure but needs to kick those goals when he has the opportunity, Cotts < 50 games will only get better, Durdin and Motlop are still young and and you can see the opposition have to worry about the forward line as a collective rather than individual players. Owies < 50 games has been a constant all year.
Earlier this year, we were getting the ball into the F50 enough to win games and it would bounce straight back out, now the smalls and delivery forward to options is making a hell of a difference.

From the AFL website... gives me confidence we could potentially go OK against Melbourne with/without troops returning
"Carlton's overall clearance differential throughout that same run (which is currently +88) is the fifth-most ever recorded, just four behind Gold Coast in 2011 (+92) as the most recorded by Champion Data."

Makes me think how much we need to keep Dow ( if he,wants to stay) we won't miraculously stop injuries at our club over one summer.
Being able to rotate and rest mids in-season is a great advantage.
Depth.
I hope we find a way.
